Amenities - Everything You Need for the Perfect American Getaway

We believe comfort is king. Yeah, our Mill house is 176 years old, full of history, and has more character than a classic road trip diner-but that doesn't mean we're willing to give up modern comforts. We live here, so we make sure it's cozy, functional, and full of little details that make your stay feel like home (but better).

Osceola Mill sits in the heart of Vesuvius, VA-a tiny town where time slows down, neighbors wave, and the only rush is getting to the breakfast table before the home cooked food disappears. Staying here means stepping into a traditional American getaway-where you swap screen time for stargazing, trade traffic noise for the sound of a creek, and actually unplug for a bit (don't worry, we've got WiFi if you start to twitch).

What's Included?

Complimentary snacks & homemade cookies-because what's an American getaway without snacks?
Complimentary Starlink WiFi-fast enough to stream, but slow enough to remind you to go outside.
Verizon Network Extender-because small-town cell service can be...quaint.
Central AC & heating-on the main floor, so you won't freeze in winter or melt in summer.
Large porch for porch-sitting, sipping drinks, and pretending you live here full-time.
Open field for family play, with classic games-cornhole, bocce, and all the backyard nostalgia.
Outdoor fireplaces & seating along Marl Creek-perfect for telling ghost stories and making s'mores.
South River access-because nothing says "American getaway" like water nearby.
Docking stations for devices-just in case you must check your phone.
Complimentary Nespresso coffee, tea, and water-caffeine is a necessity, not a luxury.
Mini refrigerator-for leftovers, beer, or your secret snack stash.
Hair dryer-so you don't have to bring one.
Fresh linens & towels-because clean sheets just hit different on vacation.
Shower gel, shampoo, & conditioner-fancy, but not too fancy.
King-size beds-for sprawling out like royalty.
Sleeper sofas-in the McCormick Cabin & Nettie Suite, so no one has to sleep on the floor.
Private baths-because sharing a bathroom with strangers is not part of the getaway dream.
Electric fireplace heaters-for cozy vibes in every season.
Ceiling fans & Mitsubishi mini-split AC & heating-because we believe in temperature control.

Osceola Mill isn't just a place to sleep-it's a place to slow down, soak up history, and live out the classic American getaway experience. So grab a rocking chair, pour a drink, and let the world wait.

Meet Your Hosts - The Folks Behind the Mill

Linda Schatz founded At Ease Retreat Corporation after decades in design and real estate, and a lifetime of dreaming about a place like this. Originally from Hawaii, Linda brought the warmth of island hospitality to the hills of Vesuvius, Virginia, and teamed up with her son, Tyler, to create something heartfelt, creative, and refreshingly down-to-earth.

They didn't want to build a resort-they wanted to build a place that felt like home. A place for gathering, creating, laughing, healing, and staying a while.

Why they chose this property

Meet the Family Behind Osceola Mill
At Ease Retreat Corporation is the heartbeat of Osceola Mill, and at the center of it all is Linda Schatz-a woman who knows a thing or two about hospitality.

Originally from Hawaii, Linda grew up in a culture where family, gathering, and making guests feel at home were a way of life. That warm, welcoming spirit is something she has brought to Osceola Mill, shaping it into a place where visitors can unwind, unplug, and feel completely at ease.

Before running the Mill, Linda spent 27 years in real estate development, working on everything from apartments and retail spaces to master-planned communities. After falling in love with rural Virginia, she knew she wanted to create a space that felt comfortable, unpretentious, and deeply connected to the land-a true home away from home.

She's not doing it alone, though. Tyler Schatz, her son, has also joined the family business, helping to carry the torch and ensure Osceola Mill remains a special place for generations to come.

So whether you're here for a weekend getaway, a quiet retreat, or just to escape the nonstop hustle of modern life, know that you're stepping into a piece of history-with a little extra comfort, a touch of nostalgia, and a whole lot of heart.

What makes this property unique

Back in the 1800s, water-powered mills were the heartbeat of the Shenandoah Valley. Osceola Mill was one of seven mills along Marl Creek, once a bustling network that fed local farms and families. Today, only two are still standing-McCormick Farm Mill upstream, and Osceola right here at the bottom of the creek. Both were part of the larger McCormick estate, rooted deep in Virginia history.
Osceola Mill spent over 120 hardworking years grinding flour and cornmeal for the local community. Built in 1849, it was crafted with massive hand-hewn beams made of now-extinct American Chestnut, and it's still standing strong thanks to the quality and care put in by generations past. The iron Fritz water wheel you see outside replaced the original wooden one and still stands as a striking piece of mill history-though it's no longer turning, it's a powerful visual reminder of the Mill's working days.

In the 1900s, the Brubaker family kept the mill going, producing stone-ground goods until Hurricane Camille swept through in 1969 and brought the operation to a close. But the story didn't end there. Instead of fading into history, the Mill was lovingly restored-first into a private residence, then a country inn-and it's been welcoming guests from around the world for nearly 50 years ever since.

Today, Osceola Mill still carries the spirit of its working past. You'll find original mill parts scattered throughout the property, a tribute to the hands that built and ran this place long before we turned it into an inn.

The Mill house now holds four unique guest suites on the second floor-each with its own charm, a private bathroom, and a blend of old-world character and modern comfort (yep, there's WiFi and espresso).

Just a few steps away, tucked beside the creek, is our McCormick Cabin-a freestanding, pet-friendly getaway with vintage vibes, perfect for families, couples, or anyone who prefers to stay close to the ground.
