Why Sue Johnson chose Makena
My parents built this home in 1969, when the only access was a dirt road. They lived here year round, but had no mail or paper delivery for many years. Its a lovely, quiet location in a pristine area, which my husband and I regularly update, and keep decorated in the Hawaiian style.
What makes this House unique
Snorkeling, turtle and whale viewing (in winter months) is awesome from our location. We can also swim off the left front side of our property. Our oceanfront location with sunset views overlooking 3 islands and 2 peninsulas is truly unparalleled.

Enjoyed our stay
The location is simply lovely, and the layout of the house worked well for our family. A couple of small needs and issues were quickly taken care of by the property manager and owner. We esp enjoyed dining at our outside table morning and night! Several of us, including my 6yo, watched sea turtles closely from the lava rock out front. We'd love to go back and visit again! Mahalo!
This property truly has a special location. Located directly oceanfront in MaKena in the best snorkeling, turtle viewing and whale watching spot on Maui. A quiet area with a pristine white sand beach only a 4 min walk to the south. The yard facing the water is large, with grassy areas overlooking the ocean, Molokini, Lanai and Kaho’olawe. The views and sunsets are second to none anywhere on Maui.
The house itself is an older home, very comfortable and has some upgrades. It is an early 70’s style home that captures the culture of Makena. We have stayed at many 5 star luxury homes and we are normally accustomed to luxury newer builds. This house, although not “luxury”, is equally good in comfort and most amenities. The kitchen needs to be upgraded, although, this in no way impacted our wonderful stay. The BBQ works great and plenty of propane was supplied. (We could not locate the BBQ cleaning brush).
There are room air-conditioners in all three bedrooms and the main living area. They work well when you want to cool down. The ocean breeze works great and we only used AC at night.
A few more lawn chair amenities would be a good improvement. Better beach chairs/Umbrellas to take to the beach would be appreciated. Kayaks with paddles and life jackets would be an over the top addition. A hot tub/spa would also be an amazing amenity to include at some point.
We would certainly stay here again and highly recommend this property. The history and story of this family house is super interesting and thank you Sue for sharing your story. Congrats on keeping this gem in your family. Hopefully future generations will do the same. It is truly special and you are very blessed to have this incredible place to visit and call your own.

Thanks so much for the review Jason.
We appreciate this wonderful inheritance we have received and enjoy sharing it with others.
A kitchen remodel is planned for this August and Sept.! I personally cannot wait until it is complete!
Turtles and Whales
Amazing to see every day from the Terasse the Whales jumping out of the ocean.
You just go from the house in the ocean and snorkle with turtles, amazing. No need to book any tour, you have everything at the house
Yes, our location lends to incredible experiences...it is better than words can express!
Great home for a family vacation!
Sue and Clark's home in Makena was perfect for our family of six. It's a beautiful home in a near-perfect location. The best snorkeling, the best sunsets. Beautifully equipped indoors and out. Sue and Clark--and their local property managers Jim and Katarina were completely available and responsive to our needs. The setting is quiet and reasonably private, yet it is very close to the hotels and restaurants just up the road. It really is as the picture shows, just yards from the beach. The home has been in the family for two generations, and their love of the place shows. We recommend this home without reservation! Larry and Kim
A slice of paradise
We have travel to Maui about 30 times before discovering this gem located in such an idyllic setting!!! Our grandchildren loved discovering the tide pools and snorkeling right from the bay in front of the house. Located near an old stone church and great beach for wave hopping it is in a quiet neighborhood. This house offers privacy along a street that is perfect to walk or run along. Inside you have 3 beds and 3 bathes. The kitchen overlooks the spacious view of the ocean. Enjoy meals on your deck while watching the sunset. You are right on the ocean. We will stay here every time we come to Maui and recommend it to everyone we can!!!!
Thanks for the lovely review Julie.
I am always gratified when our guests enjoy the special aspects which our home and our location have to offer. I am just very happy that your grandchildren discovered the tide pools, and that you enjoyed the environment and the local culture in our wonderful Makena.
I look forward to having you back again soon. Sue
A little piece of Maui heaven
An amazingly tranquil and gorgeous setting for this cute, cottage like home. My husband and 4 daughters had the trip of a lifetime and will not forget it. The natural beauty of Hawaii is all there, right in the back yard. Very close to beaches and snorkeling and shopping and restaurants. We drank our coffee in the morning at the table with the mongoose, geckos, birds and sea turtles who munched on the sea grass in the cove. Will be back for sure!
We own a 40 foot dog leg parcel of land, to the left of our home, that is directly on the ocean. You can enter the ocean from this area wearing beach shoes in the morning when the ocean is calm.Maximum Occupancy Six Persons.
