The location was great and the free parking was a bonus. It felt like a very safe neighborhood and you could easily walk to sites on Capitol Hill. The house was clean and the owner was easy to reach when we had a question. We highly recommend this rental and would stay here again!

Great Place!

We so enjoyed our stay! They neighborhood was just close enough to walk to anything we needed and the garden in the back was perfect for resting in after a long day. The beds were comfortable, it was clean, a little smaller than I anticipated but there was plenty of space for my husband, myself and 2 teens to have room. Would definitely recommend.

Perfect accommodations. Great location.

We spent a week exploring DC from this property. It was everything we could have hoped for. Quiet location. Close to all sorts of public transportation. We rode bikes everywhere. Wonderful restaurants within walking distance. A grocery store a couple blocks away. We were close in to all the sights. But we could sit out in the little patio and enjoy a quiet happy hour by ourselves as well. Highly recommend this if you are coming to DC.

Perfect Place to Stay in DC

This was the perfect place for our DC trip. The house is within walking distance of the Mall, and the Capital Hill neighborhood has tons of restaurants and a great local feel. The couch house was exactly what we needed. It was beautifully decorated, and you can't beet the privacy it offers. There is a gated entrance, and the private garden was a wonderful place to have a glass of wine before dinner. We highly recommend booking this couch house if you're going to spend any amount of time in DC. We are definitely going to book again the next time we visit!

Fabulous Location

Perfect stay in a gorgeous neighborhood. Within walking distance of great restaurants, shops and markets, not to mention everything on Capitol Hill. The carriage house was comfortable and had all the amenities for a 5 day stay. The private garden was charming and we took advantage of sitting in the adirondack chairs every afternoon. We loved our short conversation with Marguerite as we were leaving, and Hilary was very accessible via email and phone. My only suggestion would be new mattresses on the beds but other than that the accommodations were great!

Perfect

This was a long weekend with my grown daughter. The amenities were perfect for our stay, as I specifically was looking for a place to park. We walked and walked!! Everything was within walking distance. We did book a tour of Mount Vernon, which we loved!! This is a beautiful place for a couple for a romantic time away, or mother daughter time away. We had a courtyard all to ourselves. Thank you for sharing your perfect place!!

perfect location perfect carriage house

We came to Washington for the weekend of the Army 10 miler in which my husband was participating. Hilary answered tons of questions before our arrival, gave us great tips for food, activities and getting around DC without a car! We walked to register for the race - stored our luggage as we arrived early which was a bonus! The Carriage House was the perfect space for my husband and I for this stay. We picked up some groceries around the corner at Capital Hill Supermarket to store in the tidy kitchen where she had left us some goodies to get started. Bed and shower were great - wi fi worked well! Shampoo and soap and travel toothpaste provided! Just a few blocks from the Capital and Union Station. Two blocks over on Massachusetts Avenue are 3 or 4 restaurants to choose from and others are not far! We loved this location and hope to stay here again -

Perfect place to stay

We had a great time in DC and the cottage house was perfect for us. The area is safe and it is only a bike ride or walk away from all the sites. The house has a kitchen and dining room as well as a nice bedroom and bath. Everything is clean and well kept. It is much less expensive than a hotel and the kitchen allows you to save money by making and keeping food. The master bed is comfortable and roomy for 2 adults and the couch is great for a guest or child. The manger Hilary was very good with communication and very organized. The outdoor gate was hard to open a few times but Hilary quickly had it serviced while we were there. We had groceries delivered and food delivered several times making it possible to have great food without having to go out. We will return hear again on the next DC visit. Thank you for your hospitality!

Alex K., Where do you live?

Great location, room size, and parking

As already mentioned is the location. We did not use your car during our stay, we walked everywhere. From the location to the Lincoln Memorial was 2.6 miles. A lot of the museum's are a little over a mile away. Eastern Market is probably 5 or 6 blocks away. Parking was great to have. The space in the driveway is small since the building is from 1890 so if you have a large vehicle it will be tight and you might be sticking out into the sidewalk. The two rooms are nice size for two people. The bedroom is actually large for the size of whole space. The walkin shower was nice. The only items that need addressing is the chairs in the living room needs to be cleaned and the mattress for the day bed seems pretty broken down. Also, the freezer needs to be defrosted. The coffee maker should be checked between rentals. The coffee maker and coffee pot needed to be cleaned when we checked in. Everyone associated with the rental was very responsive. Overall we were pleased with our stay.

This place is heavenly. It is hard to convey in the photos the quiet beauty of the private garden assigned to that small house. The small house is tastefully decorated with antique furnishings. Me, my wife and our two boys (6 and 9) had plenty of space. The bed and sofas are very comfortable. There was always a lot to do, as all the main museums are within walking distance. Restaurants in the Capital Hill/Barracks Row neighborhood were impressively good and affordable. Eastern Market was fun. It has a great bookstore. It is very charming and peaceful neighborhood. We did not need a car.

This Capitol Hill carriage house is one of our favorite places we have ever stayed in D.C.! The sleeping arrangements were perfect, with two different rooms - one for us and one for our adult daughter. The courtyard was a fun addition for atmosphere. The kitchen was well-stocked and the bathroom was spacious and clean. Our hosts were just delightful and so helpful. The location can't be beat - just a block from the Supreme Court building. And the bonus of free parking was unbelievable. Truly a delight and we will be returning to this property!

Excellent location

Being in the neighborhood was perfect for dog walks and biking. The city is such a great place for biking around and being able to park our car off street and leave it there was amazing. Accommodations were good, large shower with good pressure. Friendly residents and safe, fast internet. AC in both rooms was a plus.

Oh my gosh. I almost don’t want to say how awesome it is because I want it to be available. The next time I go to DC! The space we rented is the original carriage house to the original building on the corner. It is clean and cute and quiet and perfect for a single parent with two kids, especially studious type teenagers. Our main reason for staying was because as a graduate student, I needed to be on the hill the next morning to talk and present to a few different representatives and senators. While the rest of my class had to take a horrible bus trip down from New Jersey, I had the luxury of waking up, making breakfast, getting dressed and walking the mile or so down to meet my group, and getting to see sites along the way. we did not return that day like my class did, we stayed until Saturday and actually I ended up booking a place just over the river for Saturday night because this place was already booked so we couldn’t stay another nite. One heads up –keep the drapes closed in the bedroom because another part of the carriage house is an office and they use the back patio too. That’s about it. Everything we needed was there. It states there’s no washer or dryer, but there is so I was able to start the towels/sheets for the owners before we left. It’s just so pretty and quiet!!!! There is also someone who lives in the main property so there’s always someone there if you need something. Highly highly recommend.!

About the host

Hosted by Katy Kelly

Host profile image
The Kelly family is the second family to live in the main house, which was built in 1876 by Maj. Samuel Walker for his family.

Why they chose this property

One of the premier properties on Capitol Hill, the carriage house, the stable and the east side of this Victorian house were completed in 1876. By 1886, Maj. Samuel Walker had more money and ten children so he added the west side of the house, the third floor and the porches in the style of Charles Eastlake, the English architect who simplified Victorian architecture and flattened its rounded gingerbread. All of the first floor ceilings—except the hall—are tin and so is a bedroom ceiling on the second floor.

What makes this property unique

One of the great pleasures of the main house is that it remains much as it was when first built. Modernizing was done slowly, with care and caution. On the chance that electricity was just a fad, Major Walker only electrified every other arm of the chandeliers in the living room and the study and left the others as gas jets. The gaslights still work--and so does the electricity.
