Premier Sugarloaf area home located in the heart of the Carrabassett Valley trail network, the ultimate sweet spot in the center of all the area has to offer.This open concept home filled with natural light sits just 50 feet above the river. This home boasts unique living areas both inside and out. Sit back by the wood stove as a wall of windows paints a picture of the river below, enjoy coffee or dinner on the screened in porch, take a snooze in the hammock down by the river, gather around the fire pit, catch a few shooting stars from an authentic stone recliner or entertain guests in the unique outdoor kitchen complete with stone fireplace. You are guaranteed to find your happy place here!!!

Mountain bikers will appreciate the 3 ways to access the trails. Walk across the river when the water is low to Mead trail 205; take a ride 100 yards down 27 to the old town road connecting the the outdoor center; or ride up 27 just 1/2 mile to Campbell field. This clean, contemporary getaway is like living in a luxurious tree house. Extremely convenient to the mountain, located only 1.5 miles south the Sugarloaf access road, in between OMG corner and the Campbell Field. The home sits on a perch overlooking the rocky, flowing Carrabassett River on a quiet dead end road. Bike, hike and relax in the mountains of Maine.

Massive gorgeous windows and a wrap-around screened-in porch let you enjoy the bright birch & pine trees year round. The home's floor to ceiling windows bring in tremendous seasonal sunshine and a nice cross breeze comes off the river courtesy of the Bigelow Mountain Range. Enjoy tremendous sunshine and warmth during any season. Open the windows and let the music of the river put you to sleep. No need for an alarm clock; you will wake to the river's voice, and enjoy your morning coffee sitting back by the river in your own stone recliner. There is a perfect swimming spot for post ride relaxation at the bottom of the trail; no need to get in your car!

Mountain bike info: There is an adequate, secure storage area under the porch for bikes, paddle boards, canoes, etc.

***** Layout information. The home is a true 2 bedroom with sleeping for 9. The master bedroom is located on the 2nd floor. In addition, there is a very small room that contains a twin bed. The guest staying in that room will need to enter the master bedroom to use the bathroom on that floor.
The lower level contains a pass thru bunk room that has sleeping for 4 and a private bedroom. The shared bath is located off the bunk room area.

Very nice place right on the river. The kitchen and bathroom had everything we needed, the bedroom spaces were more than ideal, outdoor space was amazing and the stereo+CD collection an A+. Our family had a really good stay, will definitely come back!

Sugarloaf Trip

This property was perfect for all of us. 3 families had no issue with space and the location couldn't have been better for skiing, biking snowmobiling and relaxing.

We loved this house & the surrounding property. Somehow it exceeded our already high expectations based on the posting, and we didn't want to leave when Sunday came around. Super clean, super spacious, perfect for what we were looking for! The river is a bit shallow but perfect for just hanging in the sun and floating for the day. I think it's safe to say all of us definitely want to make it back here for an even longer stay than last time -- we couldn't get enough!

Awesome House for a Ski Trip to Sugarloaf!

What a cool house with a great location to Sugarloaf mountain. Myself and 2 friends stayed there the first week of March for a ski trip to Sugarloaf. The house really impressed us and was even better in person than what the pictures show. The interior is well appointed, yet gives that warm and welcoming feeling you want from a mountain home. The location is beautiful and quiet, yet only minutes from all the action at Sugarloaf. A shuttle to the mountain is available very close to the house, but we found it just as easy to drive. Less than 5 minutes and we were at the mountain ready to ski. Scott is a great host who is very responsive and easy to work with. I would absolutely stay at this house again!

Perfect Mountain Location

Scott's house was perfect for our two-family get together. Our nephew and his family of two young children slept on the ground level while my husband and I slept on the third floor away from the morning noise of children. The crowning glory of the second floor/public space was the screened-in porch overlooking the river, which was a constant treat for our eyes and ears. The location of the house is also amazing. In addition to it's frontage on the Carrabasset River, it's located on a private road off of route 27, so it is shielded from road noise. Plus it's a short (.3 mile) ride from an entrance to extensive bike trails along the river. We road directly from the house every day. Though the house is immaculately maintained (and Scott uses dehumidifiers to address this), people with sensivity to mustiness should plan to sleep upstairs rather than on the ground level. Other than that, everyone will find the Wheelhouse to be a haven...

Heaven on Earth!

We recently had the pleasure of staying at this incredible river-side cabin, and we can't say enough about what an exceptional experience it was. From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by this location's natural beauty and tranquility. The sound of the flowing Carrabassett River and the fresh mountain air instantly put us at ease. It's a paradise for nature lovers, and you can't help but fall in love with the serenity of this place. The cabin itself was a gem. Immaculately clean, well-maintained, and beautifully decorated, it felt like a home away from home. The large windows in the living area allowed for stunning views of the river and the nearby forest, and the cozy wood stove added a touch of rustic charm to the experience. The kitchen was fully equipped, making it easy to prepare meals, and the comfortable beds ensured a great night's sleep. This location is a dream come true for outdoor enthusiasts, with abundant activities to enjoy. We spent our days exploring the nearby trails and our evenings around the fire pit, making s'mores and gazing at the starry night sky. It was an experience we won't soon forget. The hosts were incredibly welcoming and went above and beyond to make our stay memorable. Their genuine hospitality made us feel like welcomed guests rather than tourists. Fantastic Escape -- Loved this Place -- Want to Go Back!

Okay, we do not mountain bike and this is not our typical type of vacation, but the reviews here were so good, we had to check it out. We were not disappointed. This place is fabulous! It is clear that Scott has put a lot of thought and care into making this place so accommodating. First, we loved the screen porch and the sound of the river permeating throughout the house. We loved the outdoor shower. We loved going down to the river after a long day of hiking. We loved cooking outside by the fireplace. We loved kayaking on Flagstaff lake. We cooked all our dinners at the house and ate breakfasts there as well. Lunches were packed for days of adventure out and about. The house had everything we could possibly need, including kitchen supplies, TP, paper goods, towels, and even parchment paper for baking. Some rentals lack these items, but not this place. There are numerous trails to walk/hike. We enjoyed (easiest to more difficult) the Narrow Gauge walkway (near the house), the Poplar Stream Falls Trail, the Burnt Mountain Trail, and the Range Trail to Cranberry Peak. We also brought our dog and felt very comfortable having him there. He stayed on the main floor. The upstairs MBR was terrific. Bed was very comfortable! We didn't use the master bath shower since the detached outdoor shower in the woods overlooking the river was a real treat. We cooked outside on several occasions and loved that as well. Kayaking on Flagstaff Lake is not to be missed -- a drop off point is about 14 minutes away from the house. My wife and I brought our computers so we could work, but we never turned them on...a real vacation. I am glad that I brought an adapter that connected an HDMI cable from the TV (already supplied) to my lightning connection on my i-phone. This was helpful streaming shows from my phone to the TV on occasion. Our 23 year-old son joined us for a few days of hiking and kayaking and he too was impressed (not an easy feat to accomplish) by the house and its location. My wife has already asked whether we should make a reservation for next year so perhaps I should be trashing this place instead. Speaking of trash, you do have to take the trash to the transfer station (dump), but that is not Scott's fault. We really enjoyed our time here. Thank you Scott for sharing your home!

Amazing Place to Stay!

We had such an incredible experience with this rental! Right from the start, Scott was so accommodating and made this such an effortless experience on our end. He was an excellent host and was highly communicative, making sure we felt safe and comfortable at every turn. The house itself was awesome! We stayed for 7 nights and honestly didn’t have one moment where we felt the house was lacking. Tons of space, dog friendly, and truly set up to live in with ease. We cooked every night that we were there and there wasn’t one utensil, type of cookware or appliance that the house didn’t have! Only a five minute drive from Sugarloaf, we spent our days at the mountain but our nights in front of the cozy wood stove! The house was stocked with more wood than you could possibly ever use and it was such a treat for us! The view of the river amongst the snow dusted trees made us feel like we were in a real life snow globe and it was absolutely unreal. The house also has a gorgeous screened in porch which would be perfect for drinking your coffee on outside of the winter months and I hope we have the opportunity to take advantage of it in the future! We’re already thinking about going back and we haven’t even been home for a full week yet - we cannot recommend this rental enough!

Great Get Away

The wheelhouse was a great place to stay! Beautiful setting next to the Carrabasette River and close to Sugarloaf Mountain. Scott, the host, was very responsive from the day I made the reservation. And stayed in touch to make sure we had everything we needed. The house was clean and cozy and well stocked with games and firewood for a nice, relaxed family stay. I highly recommend the Wheelhouse for your next trip to the Sugarloaf area. Can’t wait to go back.

Yes, there is a reason why this place gets 5 stars (from everyone). You really feel like it’s a vacation, away from it all. We love this place! After last years’ experience, we decided to return for a longer stay. We love the screened in porch and the sound of the river permeating throughout the house. We love the detached outdoor shower overlooking the river (never once showed inside). We love going down to the river after a long day of hiking. We love cooking outside at the detached outdoor patio and sitting by the stone fireplace. We love kayaking on Flagstaff Lake, packing a lunch, finding a private beach, and going for a swim with a view of Bigelow Mountain Preserve. We cooked virtually all our dinners at the house and ate breakfasts there as well. Lunches were packed for picnics on the rocks at the base of waterfalls. There are numerous trails to walk/hike. We enjoyed (easiest to more difficult) the Narrow Gauge walkway (near the house), Moose Loop Pond Trail, swimming holes at West Mountain Falls, Esker Trail, Reed Falls Trail, the Poplar Stream Falls Trail, summitting Sugar Loaf Mountain (after taking the chair lift most of the way), the Burnt Mountain Trail, and the Fire Warden Trail. We also brought our dog and felt very comfortable having him there. He stayed on the main floor. The upstairs MBR was terrific. Bed was very comfortable! I am glad that I brought an adapter that connected an HDMI cable from the TV (already supplied) to my lightning connection on my i-phone and also brought my apple tv box which was easy to connect. The house is incredibly well stocked with most things that you need. In addition, Scott was extremely responsive to any questions / issues we had. We really enjoyed our time here. Thank you, Scott, for sharing your home and the attention to detail to make our stay so enjoyable (including games and headlamps)!

The house is beautiful. There isn’t one thing you could think of that the house didn’t have for you if needed. From chargers to cooking supplies. My kids enjoyed the board games, legos and the outdoor fire place.

An Exceptional Experience

The Wheelhouse was even better than expected. We spent the 4th of July weekend and enjoyed every moment. Days were spent hiking (many local trails), afternoons spent by the river, and evenings were spent on the screened-in porch. We cooked on the grill every night. The owners truly thought of everything to make the cabin feel like home. Our 6 year old was thrilled to see that there were Legos and coloring books for her to keep busy. We will definitely be back!

Great ski weekend

We spent a great long ski weekend at the Wheelhouse and loved it. The house is immaculate, appropriately rustic, and light and airy with a beautiful view out the large windows of the surrounding trees. The location is convenient for skiing at Sugarloaf. We also enjoyed snow shoeing and hiking on the trails directly behind the house. We will definitely be back!

Treehouse heaven

What a treat to vacation in this house! My family of four including two young adult children and pup had a wonderful week. The extensive bike trails for every ability are only a few minutes ride from the house, and after a long ride or hike we cooled off down at the river pools on the inner tubes or hammocks thoughtfully provided by the host. Sugarloaf area was a bit quieter than we expected due to the good outdoor facilities nearby, but some excellent restaurants nearby meant I didn’t have to cook much - it’s vacation! Best part was the beautiful, airy, modern home. The large screened in porch was our favorite hangout for any time we weren’t on the bike or the water. You can hear the musical sound of the running river all through the house but it was particularly delightful on the porch. The master bedroom has many windows and no shades that we saw. Fortunately we have the same set up at home by choice so this so was perfect for us but may not work for everyone. But don’t pass on this house for that reason- just bring a sleep mask. River sounds, fresh air and exercise will ensure a good nights sleep We loved our magical time here and will definitely return, hopefully soon! ,

Relaxing at the wheel house by the river.

The house and property where awesome the river and outside fire pit again awesome just what I needed to relax and decompress we went to many lakes waterfalls and trails. Again a great trip we enjoyed our stay and can’t wait to go back. The colors of the trees were electric we timed it perfectly.

This place was terrific. Location is unbeatable, especially if you’re going there to ride. We went in late August and the river was still high enough for swimming. Property is very well taken care of and well appointed. There wasn’t anything we needed that wasn’t at the tips of our fingers. Communication with the hosts was always prompt and easy. Riverside Oasis in NW Maine

This was our second stay at the Wheelhouse over the past year. We simply love this property and its location. The house itself has a modern contemporary feel while fitting very nicely into the rustic surroundings. There is not much to want while you are here. The outdoor fireplace was our go-to spot every evening for star gazing. Being late August, it got down into the low 50’s each night so the fire was a must have. The river on the property is one of our favorite ways to spend the days chilling. The tree hammocks on the river & the sounds of the running water could put the most stressed-out person to sleep in no time. The water was the perfect temperature to take a dip and cool off. Don’t forget to take advantage of the outdoor shower. We love it so much we’ve yet to use the indoor shower at all during our stays. The house itself had everything we needed for an outstanding stay. There was not an item we needed, in fact, it's stocked better than our own home! If you Mt Bike you can’t go wrong staying at this property. There is simple and easy access to some of the best big mountain riding I’ve experienced this side of Moab. The trails are all well marked supporting abilities from beginner to expert. The property has a bike cleaning and repair station on site. You can be on the trails in less than 5 minutes right off the front step. Scott is the consummate host. He was super communicative about the property and its amenities and special features. He is clearly vested in making sure you have a wonderful stay. Scott responded immediately to any texts we sent and provided us with some great tips about the area. Take his advice and open the windows and doors the minute you arrive and let the river sounds take over. We can’t wait to go back!

Great family getaway

The property was all it showed in the ad and more. Exceeded mine and my families expectations. Would definitely do it all again. Great internet access and used my fire stick on the tv with no problems. Best to have a 4 wheel drive vehicle to ensure access to the private road and driveway in the snow. Plowing was good with gravel mix laid down.

Salvaged Weekend

The property exceeded expectations and was very well prepared. We booked with a small group of friends for a long weekend intending to ski but were dealt rain and wind that prevented us from getting on the slopes. The Wheelhouse was well stocked with games and entertainment options to keep us busy and comfortable. Scott was very helpful and responsive to any questions we had leading up to and during our stay. We are looking forward to a booking during the spring/summer to get out and enjoy the trails the area has to offer.

A great spot, right on the river and surrounded by fantastic trails. Jumping in the river and the outdoor shower after a long ride was priceless.
