About this property

Secluded Cottage on Private Estate 23 acres. Hiking and parks nearby.lovely deck

Property Description:

Five minutes from Carmel or Monterey, this secluded home is a dream get-away for a couple seeking quiet beauty and charm as a way to balance all the easily accessed fun of the Peninsula. This cottage, a secret paradise, is part of an architecturally exotic estate on 23 acres in Jack's Peak. It is a discovery you won't want to miss.

The entrance to the estate is gated and the Casita cottage guest house is completely secluded. It was recently remodeled and is very comfortable. It is about 575 square feet, with a combined kitchen/living area including a twin daybed for a third person/ child.
The one bedroom is ultra quiet with a comfortable King bed, privacy blinds, authentic Tibetan furnishings, and a "65 screen with WiFi. The glass-sided shower is tiled to the ceiling with limestone.
The patio area is private and lovely with a covered table surrounded by sequoia redwoods. The patio has a new HotSpring spa for soaking, an outdoor shower, Weber grill, an adjacent secret garden with overhanging grape arbor and fire pit for late night star gazing.
The house is heated when necessary by a wood burning stove/fireplace. (There is plenty of wood available on the deck to fuel the fires!). Space heaters are also available.
Casita Cottage guests will have ample secured private parking immediate to the guest house in the driveway.

Interaction with Guests and Guest Access:

The Host, Peterson, will greet you and go over essentials upon confirmation of the reservation and/or before your arrival at which time the main property gate code and his phone number will be made available. Please feel free to contact him for any questions or issues. There are other residents on the estate who could help in an all-out emergency, but privacy for all is the rule of the day.

The Neighborhood:

We love the birds! Owls, Redwing Hawks. Oh so many birds. We feed them, too. Our neighbors treasure their privacy and this is considered a rural neighborhood, with five acre minimums to build. Very quiet, and we ask our guests to be relatively quiet also.

There is also a small herd of sheep and goats maintaining the property vegetation who love any extra treats you might want to share on the way to a hike in Jack's Peak Regional Park (900 acres to hike and enjoy the view), which is an easy walk from our driveway.

Looks nothing like the photos. Very dirty - the dishes were dirty, the floors were filthy, you can't open the windows. There were horrible stenches. The Garbage disposal didn't work and it smelled like mildew. It smelled like cat pee.The owner is in full denial of any of the issues. Save yourself the hassle and stay somewhere else. We ended up cutting our stay short due to the smell and filth to stay in our van. I wouldn't stay here even if it were for free.

The casita is located on a23 acre estate that is five minutes from Carmel. It was unique and eccentric and beautiful. We absolutely loved it. The host, Peter, was kind and gracious,

Quiet and cozy

Loved our stay here….nestled up amongst the trees so it was very peaceful and secluded. Loved relaxing watching the fog roll through in the morning. Comfy bed!

Carmel Stay

This is one of the most unique places that we have ever stayed at and we thoroughly enjoyed the serene vibe that it brings. The architecture, vintage artifacts, gardens, statues and design is extremely enchanting and dreamy! The only downfall was the hot tub; it wasn't what we expected and no instructions were provided on how to operate it or if it worked at all? Otherwise, the secluded cottage is a phenomenal place to stay!

The property was completely different than the listing. What you see in the picture is a carefully curated escape with nice furnishings and linens and a place you could spend a week relaxing and enjoying quiet. What we found was just subpar in every way. Furnishings in the photos are entirely different; old worn couches with shabby blankets, rugs cut in half spread on the floor; visible dirt and soil on the floor; bed frame different; linens mismatched and dirty looking; hot tub that was green and had a 3 foot wide spider web built on top of it indicating it hadn’t been open in months; no gas grill, no tv, no WiFi password submitted. The lock was a rudimentary latch with master lock. This place was just gross. We had bought a car load of groceries to stock for the week that we had to drive around town returning at 600pm because we could not stay in such abjectly bad conditions. We contacted the owner and VRBO. Owner did not want to recognize the completely different reality of the casita relative to the listing, offering less than half of the rental back as resolution, which we declined to accept. Never have had such a misrepresentation with a VRBO before. Hopefully the owner takes measures to ensure accuracy of the listing in the future.

Great Property with an interesting past

Aside from a few outdated listing pictures of the cottage, the experience was pretty magical. Location was perfectly situated between Carmel and Monterey. Access to property was seamless and the host was probably the most interesting man in the world. He was there only when we needed and got to share some great stories. Highly suggest experiencing this for yourself.

Beautiful and eclectic masterpiece

This was the most interesting and gorgeous place I've ever stayed. Read the articles and booklets about the place! It was hand built by the owner over 10 years with art and architectural pieces collected from around the world over the course of his lifetime. Absolutely fascinating and incredible.

Most excellent stay

This place was in te country and very quiet with an artistic and very functional house plus a huge deck. Sunny every day (above the fog line) and we mostly stayed at the place. Took some nice hikes. The host was wonderful and we want to go back soon.

Casita del Hacienda Aguajito

Very fine. Furniture inside could’ve been smaller to fit the space, more Persian. And the butcher block for eating table could be replaced by a table where you can fit your knees under. But otherwise, unique and delightfully offbeat.

Paradise

OMG! Where to begin! Peterson was amazingly hospitable. His Casita was perfect with a fabulous patio. My Newfie, Linus was treated like royalty. The fire pit and fireplace were wonderfully cozy after a day at the beach. 2 huge screen TVs with all the amenities. My favorite thing was not hearing any traffic, just birds. It was so awesome. This property has so many artifacts and art work. You can tell much love went into this. One could easily spend hours strolling the grounds looking at everything. I want to live there! We will be back. It is also 5 minutes to Carmel and Monterey.

A beautiful Casita

This property is so beautiful. The aesthetics outside were delightful. We love Carmel.. we would like to see the owner update the listing, because there was no outdoor tub that was usable. We tried heating up water in a tea pot to warm up some warm water from the Spicket but when we tried to get in it, it was not usable. We also tried to use the little fireplace that they had in there as it was extremely cold at night, but the fireplace wouldn’t keep a fire going. I guess because it hadn’t been cleaned properly. We were able to borrow a space heater though, and that helped tremendously. We were also disappointed that there were not Arabian horses there the owner told us that they had to move them to a different property because of the dry dust.

Beautiful property

This cozy casita and beautiful property made our stay most enjoyable. Our host, Cheryl, was very nice. The reasonably priced casita was well-equipped with everything we needed for our week's stay. Highly recommend if you're looking for a quiet private convenient location.

Peaceful retreat

I could spend days on the back patio - so beautiful and peaceful. The cottage is very private with a separate driveway, but you can see the main house up the hill so you don't feel totally isolated. 10 minute drive to Carmel (but you may not want to leave the fire pit!). Super comfy bed, well equipped kitchen, tons of art from around the world. Everything you need.

Quiet and Quaint - Peaceful

Everything in the area is less than 10min from the property. Perfect place to relax and enjoy all views and sounds of the Monterey Coast. Katy's Place for breakfast and Mission Ranch for dinner with a walk up to Jack's Peak from the property to keep down the weight gain between eateries.

Host profile image

I've been a resident of this area since childhood.
I am an established antiques dealer, with a store in Carmel-by-the-Sea that has been there for 40+ years. I import art treasures, spiritual, and architectural pieces from abroad.

Why they chose this property

The 23 acre estate resides on an elevated spot on the Monterey Peninsula called Jack's Peak. The trails on the property weave through thriving gardens, with views and lots of local wild life to enjoy. There are several outdoor seating areas around large fire pits where you can enjoy a drink at sunset. (Firewood supplied.)

What is unique about this location is how it feels completely secluded and incredibly quiet, yet in fact we are within 5 minutes' drive of both Carmel and Monterey and just 10 minutes away from several iconic beaches.

What makes this property unique

This is sacred land to me. It’s historical and beautiful.
The legend is that this is where the indigenous peoples hid out when the Carmel Mission was being built.
