Ocean views, path to beach, short walk to lighthouse and town, sleeps 12
This listing combines a large house having a deck with a beautiful view of the ocean and an adjacent cottage allowing for peace and quiet. Perfect for an extended family, or for family and friends where some privacy is desired. Great for working at home, or long walks on the beach.
Watch the ocean from the main house deck. or from the couch in the living room, or up in the second floor bedroom, as the boats go through the cut between the beach and the outer barrier sandbar. A quick walk down the path to the beach, and choose between Lighthouse beach on the left or right towards Monomoy (shells always, see seals swimming often). There are several beach chairs provided.
The main house has 3 floors, cable (2 TVs, Comcast wifi), great mini-split AC, a large kitchen, and a gas grill on the deck. It sleeps 8 - with up to 4 kids in 2 bunkbeds in one large kid-friendly room, or up to 6 adults in queen beds in 3 comfortable rooms, with a tub or shower on each floor). There It is a pleasant walk up to Chatham light or on to the town center.
The cottage sleeps 4, with a queen bed in the bedroom and a sofa bed in the livingroom. The cottage kitchen is fully equipped with a stove, dishwasher. refrigerator, and microwave. The cottage has its own Comcast wifi/cable, with a smart TV. The bathroom includes a tub/shower. Summer breezes often provide effective cooling, with window air conditioners available if needed.
Like many Cape Summer rentals, linens (sheets, towels, pillowcases) are not provided. There are a number of firms that deliver and pickup linens in Chatham, and we'd be happy to provide a partial list.
This is typically a Saturday to Saturday rental.
Every year we get questions about our no pets policy. Between May 1st and September 15th dogs aren't allowed on Chatham beaches, except one, and that one is a bit of a drive. And a pet left inside a strange house while its owners are at the beach may decide to take revenge, and that's not something that I or my cleaning team have time to wrestle with during the transition between guests.
We want to mention a minor parking inconvenience, so as to avoid surprises. Around Labor Day 2023 a fence was erected blocking our cottage parking. All of our renters in 2023 and 2024 were successfully able to make use of our main house parking (including the front lawn in some cases), but it isn't as convenient and we are working with skilled attorneys to correct that situation.
The main house has been in my family for over 60 years, and was built in the early 1800s. While it was upgraded in the 1980s to better support year-round living it still retains it's authentic Cape Cod charm. With a large deck and several large ocean-facing windows added, and the old Cape Cod basement a distant memory. It is not a recently built suburban-style building, and if recent is your desire then another property may suit you better. It is, as shown in the pictures, a comfortable and well-equipped Cape Cod home, with the ocean a quick walk down a path and the center of town, with shops and restaurants, a pleasant walk through historical Chatham.

The place was great. Really enjoyed walking to the beach and to town. Plus, we could even go for walks out to the Monomoy Wildlife Refuge! Host was super responsive.
What a wonderful location and beautiful gem in Chatham! From the moment you step onto the deck and are greeted by the amazing views, you would never want to leave! Russell is a great host and super accommodating. The house is well equipped and super cozy. This will definitely be remembered as one of our best family vacations!!
This house was one of the best vacation rentals we’ve ever had. It doesn’t look it from the outside, but it is incredibly spacious. The beds are comfortable, the kitchen large and well stocked, everything worked as expected. Having the added cottage was a huge bonus. Russ was incredibly responsive and answered any questions quickly. Short walks to the beach and the town. Lots to do nearby. The whole family had a great time!
A comfortable house and lots of room for the ten of us. One small issue was WiFi but it all worked out.

Great vacation spot
We stayed at this spot for our first extended stay in Chatham. There were 6 of us staying for the week, with a few kids stopping in for a day or two. The house uses every room efficiently, with the bunks in the lower level providing lots of bed space for the kids. The upper bedroom is fantastic. And the location is so great: a short walk through the beach grass to the beach; a really quick drive or short bike ride downtown or to the nature reserve; the lighthouse just a few hundred yards away. We were all thrilled with the house and the location and would stay again in a heartbeat!

The location of this house is amazing. It was a 5-10 minute walk across dunes to the beach — which was virtually empty, as it’s not a public beach — and a 15 minute walk to downtown. We made use of both nearly every day. We enjoyed watching seals, walking out on the sandbar, and seeing the airplanes, helicopters, and boats pass by. The house itself is well equipped but a little funky. A few of the appliances don’t work like they should (mini split AC remotes don’t work, dishwasher required repair mid-stay). As the property is managed by the owner and not a management company, we had a couple of hiccups along the way regarding communication.

I'm glad that the guests enjoyed their stay, and as the review says this property is all about location. But I do want to share that I take guests vacations seriously - providing guests with my personal cell number - and am puzzled that the guest reports communication hiccups, There are five minisplit AC units inside the house, where the communications board for one of these failed. It still works manually. The other remotes work well, and this will be fixed off season. The guests mention a dishwasher repair, where the outflow was apparently clogged. I had a repair person there in two days, but they had already managed to remove the clog by then. To some degree the weekly rental system relies on guests treating the home as they would their own - not everything can be checked between rentals, and in this case the guests failed to mention cracking the stove's ceramic countertop which was a disappointment. But the appliance issues aside, it's important that guests enjoy their time here and the property seems to have provided another memorable Summer.
We completely enjoyed our stay. The layout of the home allows for a mixture of together time & quiet relaxation. It was larger than the pictures portray.
The main level of the home was perfect for my 80+ mom with a hall bathroom next to her room.
The cottage doesn’t have a futon in the living room, but a queen sized very comfortable sleeper sofa. A bonus.
We hope to return.
Our family rendezvoused with friends from the UK for Thanksgiving in Chatham. The waterfront property was cozy against the November chill, yet spacious enough for everyone to gather around the table--and spread out to do their own things.
The kitchen was well-appointed enough to cook Thanksgiving dinner, and the coastal view from the dining room truly something to be thankful for.
Russ was a responsive host and a committed caregiver to this family home. This was our second trip, and hopefully not our last.

Great view and proximity to the beach and Main Street
We enjoyed our stay. The property was well equipped with all the essentials! Kitchen had everything we needed and the beach gear was perfect. It was on a very private drive and the neighborhood was lovely! The deck was a great size to gather in the mornings and evenings to talk about the day. Having cable was key for us as we have small kids who love watching cartoons in down time. Just a couple suggestions for improvement: put a screen on the dining room door to help with the heat. We played games in there at night and it got hot. The lower level shower leaked into the floor and was hard to keep dry and slipping was a concern with the kids. Overall we enjoyed our stay at the house as a family

A screen on the living room side of the deck doors is a good idea,
I'll add that to my list. The water leaking from the lower level shower door
is there too. As are items such as the flooring issues on the lowest level,
and the sliding door issues on that level as well. There are other items
on the list (I replaced two of the "emitter trays" on the deck grill recently),
and it'll likely be a busy off-season trying to deal with them all.
And they'll be more later, that's just the nature of having a house by the shore.
But if you spent time on the deck, perhaps watching the fishing boats,
or just enjoying the view and the fresh air, you probably understand why
all that off-season repair work will be worthwhile. I'm glad that you enjoyed
your stay!
A typical Cape Cod cottage with a idyllic view located in the fabulous "upscale" town of Chatham was the perfect local for our extended family of 14 to gather and celebrate an 80th birthday! Sleeping quarters met our needs; one family with older boys used the cottage -Barnical, the 4 girls slept in bunk room with one set of parents in bedroom,The grandparents had the view upper level. Wish the deck had another table so we could all eat outside together. It is a 7 minute walk to a lovely beach -a beach cart helps with the load, but its worth it. Low tide is best and you can walk down beach to sand bars. we even had a double kayak, which was fun for all. Saw several seals each day. There is a current so its not a deepwater swimming spot, but you can cool off and lots for curious kids from sand castles, catching small crabs and shelling. Its a beautiful walk to town, and Chatham Fish Market & Pier a short drive down Shore Rd -a must for fresh seafood and watching fishing boats off load. Only thing really missing is an outdoor shower. All in all, a perfect location and a well stocked, cottage for all ages. We loved it!

Nice location, house with issues
The best part of this place is the location and proximity to the beach and the town of Chatham. On arrival, we were greeted by 10 putrid cans of the previous guest’s garbage plus their recycling. The house is eclectic New England with low ceilings, doors and windows that don’t close or open, uneven flooring, old college/grandmother’s house-style furniture, unstable finicky Wi-Fi, and infestation of ants. The downstairs shower leaks onto the floor. There is no parking for the second house (Barnacle), no air conditioning in the bedroom, and no easy access to its front door. The pathway down to the beach has plenty of poison ivy and ticks, so be on the lookout. We spent considerable time over our week’s stay repairing sticky doors, rebooting the router, cleaning garbage cans, and negotiating very tight parking – space for two small cars only. For the luxury rate cost of this VBRO rental, the value was quite a disappointment.

I'm disappointed that one of my guests didn't have a wonderful stay. There is a lot of effort that goes in to ensuring that high expectations are met.
When we heard about the trash problem we changed trash pickup from once to twice a week, and will continue with that when renting, which should remove that issue for good.
The cottage parking/access problem is caused by a fence recently installed by a neighbor, which blocks the parking area for the cottage. We are working through the courts to address that, and expect it to be dealt with by next season. In the meantime guests may park on the front lawn of the main house as well as in the main house driveway, which is less convenient but more than enough for several cars.
The cottage does have a window air conditioner in the bedroom, though it
isn't always installed. If we rent next Summer we'll move it from the closet to a bedroom window earlier.
When we heard about the ant problem we asked one of our cleaning team members to clean the areas affected during that week, and that seems to have improved the situation. The usual Saturday cleaning is thorough, and while ants can be an issue at beach houses we have had few problems.
We don't know of doors that don't open, though the dining room deck door is sticky (an off season project). The livingroom deck door is easily opened.
Some of the furniture is recently acquired from skilled New England craftsmen, some is older. There are pictures on the website.
While we haven't had problems ourselves with the Comcast Wifi,
we'll see about upgrading both routers in the off season.
There are some low ceilings, and the house doesn't hide its old Cape Cod bones. Some find that it adds to their vacation by the beach experience.
We do - old Cape Cod had a certain charm.
In this response I've indicated how some of the issues raised will be dealt with - the trash problem was surely unpleasant and got things off to a very bad start for this guest, and won't be an issue later on. With those issues left in the past, as they have been and will be, the other reviews may be a better guide.
As the guest indicates the best part of this property is the proximity to the beach and the center of town. The walk to town is quite pleasant. I'd add that sitting out on the deck with friends and family watching the ocean and the boats go by can be rather nice. The walk to the beach has been enjoyed by many. The view from the upper bedroom is special.
Spectacular location and house with all the bells and whistles. New grill and finished basement. The house effortless incorporates the stunning setting. The beauty of the ecosystem is obvious even while indoors. We most enjoyed our short morning walks to a point that is the commissure of the mouth of Chatham harbor.
We highly recommend this property for a family vacation. Plenty of bunk beds for kids and big play area. Beautiful Lawn and deck and easy access to the beach via sandy walk. Center of town is just a walk away as well. The kitchen was well stocked and the fridge large. Thank you!
Great location and views. Beach was beautiful, alot of seals to see and private beach.
Had a wonderful week with family. House was beautiful, and perfect location to everything/everywhere. Questions and contact was great with owner, when needed.
Our large family of adult children loved the proximity to town & the beach-both walkable. The home had plenty of comfortable space to sleep & hang out, including a large deck overlooking the beach. Kitchen & furnishings were outdated but well equipped. Our family will treasure the memories made in this comfortable home!
My husband and I stayed with 4 children (ages 5-13) as well as my in-laws, and there was still extra room. The house lived up to my expectations, and more. I loved that there were things like paper towels , toilet paper, soap all stocked. It felt very homey, but not at all cluttered. Only thing that would have made it perfect was an outdoor shower.
Nice place. Great location with access to the beach and close to downtown shops and dining. Kitchen is well stocked with any gadget you might need. Beds were comfortable and master suite is quite special with a really nice view. The deck was a great gathering spot.
We stayed at Russell’s home for a week. Spectacular location; easy stroll to a very quiet, pristine bay beach and easy stroll into town. The house, as described, is a quirky mix of old and newer. Bedroom upstairs is lovely and roomy. Kitchen had all we needed to cook up big family meals, and the deck is wonderful - our main living area day and evenings. Note there are indeed some low ceilings. My 6’3” tall husband got a few good bonks and did a lot of ducking. It was a great house for a family reunion - plenty of room for all to spreads out. Russell was very responsive to some issues we discovered on check-in. He made it right the next day.

About the host

I spent many summers of my youth at this house - it has been in my family since the early 60s. The house has changed a lot over the years. A new level has been added. A hot tub has come and gone. A deck, a garage, added. An upstairs bedroom expanded. Much of the flooring has been replaced. The house is now my responsibility, and as I live and work near Boston I can't spend the time here that I'd like.
Why they chose this property
Chatham! It's a comfortable, modern, spacious home with wonderful ocean views and a short walk to the beach. It's a very special place. Have a look at the pictures.
What makes this property unique
The location is ideal - walk to Lighthouse beach, or to the center of town. Or just watch the boats pass by from the deck... It has a generator backup. If power goes out it will be back in seconds. There is a reasonably tuned piano in the bunk room. There is AC/Heat provided by a number of mechanisms, in the past few years three mini-split systems were installed. They cool very effectively. And there are two waffle makers.
