Fabulous stay at Wagtail Cottage!
Our stay was wonderful thank you – your cottage is a real treasure! Beautifully done and very cosy.
We thought Laura was also really hospitable and couldn’t have done more. We’d love to go back as the surrounding place is so lovely for dog walking. We didn’t realise how fabulous the beaches and castles are around there.
Thanks so much for making our stay so comfortable!

Thank you for choosing Wagtail Cottage as your place to stay in Northumberlad. We are in a fabulous location for Castles and beaches. Norham Castle is only 3 miles away and you can enjoy a walk by the River Tweed followed by lunch at The Masons Arms. Alternatively, Ford & Etal are beautiful little villages a short drive from Thornton Farm. There is an English Heritage castle, stunning river walks, a flour mill and a brilliant tea room.
I very much hope we can welcome you back in the future and you can explore more on our lovely county.
All the very best,

We loved the new diner kitchen. The cottage is a perfect base and is modern with good sized bedrooms. The boys love the playpark. Laura is lovely and even arranged for our boys to meet the donkeys.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review. The play park is very handy for families with swings and climbing frame. I'm so glad the boys enjoyed meeting the donkeys. It was fun watching them chat to the ponies over the fence! Thank you for staying with us. It was a pleasure to welcome you back to Thornton Farm Cottages.
Cottage is lovely, the hosts have thought of everything. Loved the log fire. It’s in a beautiful quiet location - just perfect. Lots to explore and amazing walks close by.
Norham Castle, river walls along the viaduct beside the Tweed were fab.
Back garden is enclosed so perfect for our dog, and perfect for sitting in when the sun came out.
Just an amazing cottage and location, we will be back as there is still more exploring to do.

Lovely well equipped cottage
We had a wonderful 4 night stay in the cottage. Very warm comfortable and really well equipped - particularly comfortable beds and bedding etc. Lovely fresh eggs on arrival which was a bonus. Easy parking and a nice private garden. All the mod cons and decent wi fi to keep the teens happy. Quiet peaceful location not far from Berwick and the coast and a fabulous pub up the road - the Plough on the Hill - well worth a visit!

Wonderful (and warm) country retreat
We arrived on Monday afternoon and found the property lovely and cosy. It is very well appointed and had everything we needed including bottle opener, malt vinegar and dog bowl to mention only a few. We went to investigate the area - the nearest pub (The Plough on the Hill) is about 1.5 miles away up a very steep hill and is shut on a Monday night. It was however open on Thursday and we had a wonderful meal there. We also took a drive down to The Salutation but it was also shut on Monday. The cottage is very rural but this has its advantages as it was really quiet and only about 5 minutes drive from the A1 so we managed to visit lots of the local area. We would recommend a walk round the wall at Berwick upon Tweed and also a visit to Lidisfarne. We had lunch at The Barn at Beal, the menu is quite limited but the fish and chips is awesome! I would definitely recommend the cottage and think it would be suitable for families as it has a lovely enclosed garden and good working WiFi. There’s a good circular route - about 2.5km - for dog walking too with lots of wild life and birds to see. The owner Laura visited us on the first evening, gave us a few pointers regarding local amenities, made sure we were settled and understood how everything worked. She was also available during the week and delivered extra eggs on request as they were so fresh and delicious. All in all a great place.

Beautiful, comfortable cottage
We have just returned from a lovely week at this really nice cottage . It is finished to a very high standard and Laura left us fresh eggs , milk and a bottle of fizz which was greatly appreciated. Had a very relaxing time with our family and even the dog didn’t want to come home! Thanks again Laura.

Thornton Farm Cottages
About the host
Hosted by Laura Smales
Laura Smales has managed Thornton Farm Cottages since 2009. We are a small family run organic arable farm near Berwick-upon-Tweed. Our family have lived here since 1948 so we know the area pretty well!
Why they chose this property
Thornton is a small farm with deer and lots of wildlife. The night skies and sun rises are something else.
There are peaceful walks around the local area as we are well away from a main road. It's quiet enough for families and peaceful enough for a complete get away. You're also a short drive from shops, pubs and more importantly, stunning Northumberland coastline. We have a choice of local beaches, all of which are clean and easily accessible.
What makes this property unique
Wagtail is cosy, especially with a log burner and unlimited logs. The interior is modern and well kitted out for a home from home vibe. There is even a Nespresso machine which adds to the little bit of comfort. The garden leads straight out from the cottage and you can enjoy a morning coffee looking out to fields. It's very peaceful.
