Alfama District Apartment

The property was a small apartment in a very historic part of Alfama. It was very central, and made it easy to walk almost everywhere in the downtown, and in Alfama. Everything was clean and tidy, and adequate towels and sheets were supplied for a month. The bathroom and shower were very small, and sewage smells seemed to emanate from the drains when the people on the floor above were washing. We were forewarned and accepted that there would be ongoing construction in the apartments adjacent to us, so this was noisy, but not horrible. All in all, the apartment’s qualities were good for location, but overpriced for the size, although I know it is an expensive area.

Overpriced & Underwhelming

Flat is hot with the windows closed but very bright & loud with them open. Flat smelled musty when we arrived and had some hair in the bathroom. Ok level of cleanliness but not great. Back bedroom has a portion of the wall done in glass blocks that shares the wall with the apartment stairwell. This means every time someone goes up or down the stairwell for any of the apartments the motion detector light turns on and the back bedroom is flooded with light for about 2 min. On a busy night it can go off and on multiple times which is very disorienting. There is no way to cover these blocks. The shower is tiny and has no where for you to put soap/shampoo/conditioner. This means every time you reach down it's easy to bump shower knob and either scald or freeze yourself. The best part of our stay was when the lock stopped working when we went to use the flat after a day of sightseeing and we were told it would be a couple hours before they could send someone to look at the lock. We ended up getting a hotel and asked for a refund for the 2 nights we didn't use the property. The host made it sound like that wouldn't be a problem and to discuss with the booking party (which is a third party, not VRBO) and the request was then denied. Good luck to you if you book this property or any properties run by this 3rd party property management company.
