Información de la propiedad

The South End Of Our Restored Barn

Our beautifully restored 160 year-old barn is centrally located on Mt. Desert Island, approximately 15 minutes from the village of Bar Harbor and approximately 10 minutes from the entrance to Acadia National Park via an old farm road, aptly named 'The Crooked Road'.

The space
The 160 year-old barn once served as the livery stable for Town Hill, a one-time farming community which is in the township of Bar Harbor. We've converted the stable into two beautifully appointed apartments -- there's no other place quite like this on Mt. Desert. Soaring ceilings, hand hewn beams, cozy bedrooms, new kitchen and baths, loft space for tv and reading. We call this half of the barn 'The South Barn'. It's well-appointed and comfortable....and the baths and kitchen are brand new. The original ceiling and beams are smiling from all the love and attention! New kitchen, baths, flooring, heating, air, insulation and all the amenities create the perfectly livable blending of old and new. It's cozy, comfortable and well-appointed. The South Barn is truly a wonderful home-away-from-home and the perfect jumping off place to explore Mt. Desert Island.

Guest access
Our guests are welcomed to borrow our bikes, helmets, water bottles and bike rack for wonderful rides on the carriage roads in Acadia National Park. Feel free to wash a load of clothes in our laundry room. We'll make sure you have maps and guidebooks for use while you're visiting, and steer you towards our favorite hikes, bike rides, swimming spots, tours and restaurants.

Other things to note
Because we're at the intersection of three Island roads, our location is great for exploring the Island. Acadia NP, Bar Harbor, Southwest Harbor and the 'Quiet Side' of MDI are all close by. Be prepared for summer traffic! Our once-quiet farm road is now a busy thorough-fare that runs from one end of the island to the other.

An Island bus service, supported by L.L. Bean, stops just across the road and provides free service into Bar Harbor and throughout the national park.

Bangor International Airport is 45 miles away -- approximately an hour's drive. The regional airport, Hancock County/Bar Harbor, is approximately 2 miles from our house and barn., public transport.

What a Town Hill treasure!

This is a perfect base for exploring Acadia and Bar Harbor. Our hosts are so helpful and have provided everything a vacationer could want. Across the street is a terrific market, outside beer garden, and pizza. The welcome treats were an added bonus!

Beautiful property

The weather was wet (Hurricane Lee arrived) and there were beautiful, glorious days. Paul and Jane were the perfect hosts and even stocked the refrigerator with things they thought we could use so we didn't need to grocery shop with our late arrival. The accommodations were clean and cool. Paul had even developed a map of Acadia National Park and ranked it's trails according to skill level. Just a gorgeous place. It's somewhere I would go again.

Wonderful place

The South Barn was exceptional in so many ways. The hosts, Jane and Paul were top notch. The place was immaculately clean. There were so many extras like maps, coffee, snacks, yogurt and more. They made sure we were comfortable and helped us with hikes and other suggestions. This is a gem if you are looking to stay close to Acadia NP.

Charming and cozy

WOW! This was a most delightful stay. Our hosts were gracious, with breakfast food, snacks and a few refreshments already stocked in the kitchen. The space is fabulous and very comfortable. We spent our evenings gathered in the loft to share our favorite pictures of Acadia Park. The location is great for seeing Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. Thank you Jane and Paul.

Beautiful property with exceptional attention to detail throughout. The owners are helpful but not intrusive. Located away from the Bar Harbor crowds, but an easy trip to town when desired. Nothing but good things to say about our stay.

One of the Best

This was one of the overall best property we’ve stayed at over the years. The restored barn was charming and the property was immaculately clean. The hosts greeted us with a welcome basket and provided many helpful tips with hiking trails at the park and good restaurant recommendations. The location was close to Acadia park and other attractions and the street noise didn’t bother us. I highly recommend this property.

Perfect long weekend in Maine

Coming to Bar Harbor for a family wedding we found the south end of the barn to be a perfect home base. Beautifully restored and decorated, it had everything we needed as well as the perfect hosts. Comfortable, clean, charming, with a well supplied kitchen, the barn is even better than the pictures show. We hope to return and spend more time in Maine.

Great Location, Great Apartment

This converted-barn apartment is very nice and is very convenient to both downtown Bar Harbor and Acadia. With two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a loft, it was perfect for my family of five. Paul and Jane were very helpful hosts, providing really detailed hiking maps and suggestions, which were super useful in our days in Acadia. The only two drawbacks are that the walls within the barn apartment are pretty thin, so there's not a lot of privacy between the rooms. Also, the road it is on is pretty busy, and you hear noise from that in the apartment. Neither of these were major issues for my family. Overall, we very much enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend this property!

Perfect home-base for Acadia visit

My family and I had the privilege of staying at the South Barn during our recent visit to Acadia National Park. The rental was exactly as described and photographed. It was meticulously clean and every detail was thought out to make our stay most enjoyable. The hosts do a wonderful job providing suggestions for the park including maps, and a detailed list of possible hikes. We found two of our most favorite hikes on that list! A few of our family members also utilized the bikes provided for the carriage roads! We highly recommend a stay at the South Barn, you won’t regret it!

Paul and Jane are the greatest the place was exceptional.

My wife and I been renting vacation homes from Vrbo for 10 plus years this has to be the best place ever. It was about 10-15 min to Bar Harbor and Acadia easy to get to, the hosts Paul an Jane are the nicest people. The give us all kinds of info on where to go and places to visit. The remodeled carriage house they renovated was picture perfect impeccably clean and very comfortable. Like I said it was the nicest place I ever stayed at.

Omg. What a beautiful place. Clean and modern. Beds comfortable and Jane was awesome. Weather was beautiful and Maine has zero cases of the virus in this area. I will stay again ! If you rent this unit there is no washer and dryer so prepare accordingly!

Spectacular stay . . . if only I could keep it for myself.

Paul and Jane's property is outstanding. We staying in the South Barn which was an architectural dream with modern finishing and was spotlessly clean. The 100+ y/o barn was refurbished by Paul himself who also provided us with a list of his favorite hikes, color coordinated with a map. They also set us up with excellent condition bikes and a bike rack for our car and sent us out on their favorite carriage routes. The barn itself is so comfortable, we were two people, but this would be a great setup for four. Fresh white towels, comfortable beds, a basket of goodies (PB&J, bread, granola, snack bars and granola) and a fridge with some yogurt, juice, beer and milk. Paul and Jane are naturally gifted hosts who put tons of effort into subtle details that make their guests feel truly taken care of. The ONLY downside here is the barn/property is situated on a pretty busy street that has a lot of traffic which mostly is not a bother expect perhaps in the early morning if you're a light sleeper. Not a dealbreaker, have the cars wake you up, make a pot of coffee with the provided Starbucks and get out and experience all the goodness of MDI. We can't wait to return!

When I was in college I worked in Acadia National Park in the summers. After I graduated, I stayed and worked on the Island for a number of years before moving back to Atlanta. Of course, I always wanted to come back to Mt. Desert Island, but my career, my husband's business, our children, elderly parents -- all those very important things came first. When the opportunity to move popped up, my husband, Paul, and I jumped at the chance. We both grew up in large, Southern families. Guests from all over the neighborhood -- and all over the world -- were often at our dining tables. We multiplied that happy energy in our Atlanta home. When we decided to move to Maine, we knew we wanted to infuse our new place with a similar upbeat vibe. We also wanted to create a special place for people coming to experience the Maine Coast and Acadia National Park. So here we are, living our best life, enjoying old friends and making new ones, meeting amazing people and working hard everyday to provide an extraordinary guest experience for everyone who stays with us.

Por qué eligió esta propiedad

Our old, timber frame house was built in 1847. The barn was built sometime before 1850 and served as the Livery Stable for this end of Mt. Desert Island which was primarily a farming community for a couple of hundred years. Paul has spent his career designing and building homes, and he gets all the credit for saving the barn -- which was falling in -- re-designing it, and creating two beautiful apartments within. He also renovated our house and tucked a cozy Suite Under the Eaves for guests.

Qué distingue a esta propiedad

The hiking in Acadia National Park is some of the best in the U.S. It's fun. It's accessible and the views are spectacular. Paul has put together a great guide to his favorite hikes in Acadia, and he's marked a trail map as a companion to the guide. Our guests love it!

Additionally, the Carriage Roads in Acadia are fantastic for cycling. We have excellent Cannondale bikes to share, along with helmets and racks.
