The Chestnut House

The perfect place for you and your family to rest, unplug, enjoy novice trout fishing, and stargaze under the clean country sky.

Welcome to the Chestnut House. This recently renovated riverfront home is a blend of historic charm and modern elegance. Originally built in 1926 as a log cabin made of real chestnut, it has since been used as a US Post office, country market, and later a house in 1936. The home is nestled between the Cardinal and Little Priest mountains in the Blue Ridge Range and the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest.

The main attraction of the Chestnut House is the outdoors. Just a step away from the back door is the Piney River. Enjoy the sounds of this rushing river from the beautiful sundeck furnished with Adirondak chairs, or the picnic tables, rock fire-pit, or hammock. This two-story cottage offers scenic river and mountain views, a wood stove, chef’s kitchen, and sleeping accommodations for up to six guests. Open the windows and enjoy the sounds of the rushing Piney River and nature throughout the house.

A fun fact about the home: Growing on the side of the home facing the river is a very old, almost extinct, American Chestnut Tree. This is why we call it the “Chestnut House”.

Lastly, don’t forget your fishing rods! Native brook trout and wild brown trout populate the river.

Perfect cabin for family and fly fishing

Really cool property on the Piney River. Great fly fishing in the back yard. Tons of outdoor space- house itself is beautiful. Kids enjoyed their spring break hanging outside and fishing.

Great getaway

The home and location were great. Piney River is steps from the back door. George Washington National Forest surrounds the area with lots of opportunities to explore. The house was perfect. Well equipped kitchen and super comfortable.

A lovely home and spot.

This was the perfect spot for our spring break getaway. The home was clean and a great mix of modern and rustic. The beds and furniture were comfy, and the kitchen a great place to cook and hang out. We loved coming back after some Appalachian Trail hiking to sink into the chairs by the gorgeous river. Maria was a thoughtful and considerate host who communicated clearly and kindly. We plan on returning to stay there again!

Relaxing stay by the river.

This property is first class with top of the line kitchen. Right on the beautiful Piney River...so peaceful. Hope to visit again for a longer stay!

Lovely Home in Peaceful Setting

If you are looking for an escape from the busyness of life, this property offers the perfect opportunity. The home is a perfect mix of maintaining the history of the home and modern amenities. It is beautifully decorated and the owners have thought of every detail to provide a comfortable stay down to the basket of cozy blankets to the selection of gardening, home decor and fishing books! The host is so thoughtful and attentive with all messages. The property provides a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the river and the peace and quiet of the area. We look forward to the day we will return!

We had such a nice getaway weekend at The Chestnut House. The Heiston’s went above and beyond to make our stay exceptional. The house was beautiful, cozy, and quiet. While sitting outside, the only thing we could hear was the relaxing sound of the river running through the backyard. The hosts made us feel very welcome and made it a wonderful experience. We would definitely book this home again. 10/10 recommend!

Gracious Home in the Loveliest Setting

We could not have had a more wonderfully refreshing stay in this beautiful spot on the Piney River in the charming Chestnut House. Maria’s thoughtfulness as a host cannot be understated. The home is supplied with every need and comfort. We slept soundly, enjoyed the fire pit, fishing, naps in the hammock, coffee in the front porch rockers, reading on the deck by the river, hikes from the house, and cooking in the beautifully stocked kitchen. We cannot wait to return!

Wonderful stay

Looks even better in person. Wish we could've stayed longer. Maria had everything set out for us, and we didn't need to ask for anything. 10/10 would reserve this place again.

Beautiful and cozy

The property is beautiful, and the home is cozy and warm. There is plenty of living space, fully stocked with house needs and comfortable couches/beds. The fire pit is beautiful and the stream is so relaxing. Also plenty of yard for games and activities. Wonderful stay and just around the corner from break hikes, the i Erie’s and breweries.

The best memories made!

Wow! This place was so amazing and has absolutely everything you need for the perfect getaway. It snowed while we were there and the beauty was breathtaking. The host are absolutely the most sweetest and generous hosts. Everything is so updated and clean and the host are super responsive if you need anything or have questions. Don’t let another year pass without taking your family to this magical place.

Absolutely gorgeous

I spent the weekend with my husband and our dog, and we had a wonderful time. Not only was this home beautifully decorated, but its placement next to the river was magical. There was enough space for my pup to run to his hearts content, and for us to sit around the yard just relaxing.

This property was clean, beautifully decorated and such a peaceful location. Maria added a lovely touch with a hand written note upon arrival including a bottle of wine and fresh local eggs! Great Experience

This property was very nice. The hosts left us locally fresh eggs and donuts. All towels and sheets were fresh and there was so much extracurricular games and supplies left for visitors to use. Maria and Randy did a wonderful job with this property

Impeccable!

My wife and I have stayed in homes from Maine to California and always research our homes for location and comfort. The Chestnut house is the most well appointed and best decorated house we have rented. The location is ideal for a getaway in the mountains with the stream right below the house. Everything in the house is top notch quality. We were able to get to wineries on both sides of the Blue Ridge mountains with ease and a beautiful drive all of the days we were at the house. Perfect Getaway

We had a fantastic Thanksgiving holiday staying at the cottage. The house is exactly how you see in the pictures - charming, cozy, comfortable, clean and fully stocked with all the modern amenities you need. When we arrived, we were welcomed by a beautiful Thanksgiving table setting, a bottle of wine, fresh eggs in the fridge and a small gift from the owners. Maria and Randy made everything easy to navigate and checked in with us daily. While it was too cold to be outside for too long, there is plenty of space for any outdoor activity - and the house had lots of games and books for indoor activities as well. I highly recommend this home for a family or group of friends looking for a fun getaway. Thank you Maria and Randy. We will definitely be back!

Luxury hotel or Vrbo?

This place was the most impressive vacation rental I’ve ever been to. EVERYTHING was perfectly planned and executed from house design to decor to extra touches. They have thought of everything. If you want to play (and fish —there are some pretty big trout) on an awesome river and then go inside and pretend you are at a 5 star hotel this is the place for you! I don’t return to many vacation rentals because there is so much world to see, but I may return this one!

Exceeded expectations

My husband and I had an absolutely lovely time at Maria and Randy’s house. The house was very clean, beautifully decorated, and well stocked with thoughtful amenities. The views of the river are gorgeous and being able to hear it throughout the house was something special. We also enjoyed sitting out on the deck at night and stargazing. Maria was a wonderful host, very communicative and prompt. A true gem of a property - will definitely be back!

We purchased the home in 2022 after falling in love with its bones, history, and scenic Piney River views. It was built in 1926. Over the years it served many purposes but had since been abandoned and was in need of a lot of TLC. After one year of renovating, it ourselves, we are excited to invite guests to enjoy the beauty it offers.

The river you hear below is called the Piney River and flows for several miles....
Nestled at the base of the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest this home is a peaceful escape and the perfect place to take a break from the city.
