The Chestnut House

The perfect place for you and your family to rest, unplug, enjoy novice trout fishing, and stargaze under the clean country sky.

Welcome to the Chestnut House. This recently renovated riverfront home is a blend of historic charm and modern elegance. Originally built in 1926 as a log cabin made of real chestnut, it has since been used as a US Post office, country market, and later a house in 1936. The home is nestled between the Cardinal and Little Priest mountains in the Blue Ridge Range and the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest.

The main attraction of the Chestnut House is the outdoors. Just a step away from the back door is the Piney River. Enjoy the sounds of this rushing river from the beautiful sundeck furnished with Adirondak chairs, or the picnic tables, rock fire-pit, or hammock. This two-story cottage offers scenic river and mountain views, a wood stove, chef’s kitchen, and sleeping accommodations for up to six guests. Open the windows and enjoy the sounds of the rushing Piney River and nature throughout the house.

A fun fact about the home: Growing on the side of the home facing the river is a very old, almost extinct, American Chestnut Tree. This is why we call it the “Chestnut House”.

Lastly, don’t forget your fishing rods! Native brook trout and wild brown trout populate the river.

Great place to relax and get away. The babbling river was very peaceful. A lot of outdoor activities. The place has everything you need. And they welcomed us with a dozen fresh eggs and local ice cream! Our pup enjoyed as well.Definitely recommend.

We stayed here with another couple and thoroughly enjoyed our time. This property is absolutely lovely and one of the best kitchens we've ever had at a VRBO. The kitchen is very well stocked and has high end appliances. Because there are no stores/restaurants nearby, the kitchen is a major bonus. The property grounds are lovely and the creek in the backyard is very soothing. We didn't have great weather during our stay, but the large front porch (covered) made it wonderful. We were able to sit outside while it rained and still had an amazing stay in this lovely home. The furniture and beds were comfortable and the entire experience was excellent. Maria was very responsive and the check in was seamless. We would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for some peace and quiet in a lovely location.

What a comfortable and relaxing stay! The home is beautifully renovated, thoughtfully decorated, and incredibly well stocked with everything you could possibly need. The backyard is beautifully maintained, and we especially loved sitting by the river with our morning coffee. During our stay, a bad thunderstorm knocked out the power overnight. We didn't even realize it until we took our dog out the next morning and noticed the whole-house generator buzzing away in the side yard. I started breakfast, surfed the web, and even ran the dishwasher before realizing we were without power! The power was restored a few hours later, and the whole process was completely seamless. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend this beautiful and comfortable home!

Absolutely beautiful home inside & out - extremely clean & very cozy. Well stocked with everything you might need. Communication with host was clear & easy, they provided sweet notes & treats that really made us feel welcome. Loved enjoying the river frontage. Would definitely stay here again.

We had an absolutely phenomenal experience staying in the Chestnut House on the river. The house was absolutely stunning down to every detail. The property surrounding the home is equally breathtaking. Maria is a fantastic host and we can’t wait to go back and relax!

It is a beautiful place,we have passed it for years going in and out of the George Washington National Forest,we always thought how nice it would be to stay there.We found out that it was a VRBO but we didn't know that it had been completely restored, the inside and outside are both somewhat rustic looking in a way but everything is very modern, the host was great to deal with and we have actually booked the place again for late October, check it out, you'll be glad that you did.

We absolutely loved our peaceful stay at the coziest Riverfront Cottage on The Piney River! We love the Piney River and saw trout jumping all morning long. The cottage is impeccably decorated and immaculate. The surrounding landscape is beautiful and serene. We loved everything about our stay and look forward to visiting again.

This house was absolutely lovely. Everything was well stocked. Kitchen had plenty of pots and pans as well as plates and silverware. The atmosphere was incredibly relaxing and you had river views throughout the house. We will definitely be back!!

Beautiful house right on the river. We had an amazing time just sitting outside listening to the sound of the water rolling by. Inside, the house is impeccable with everything you need to spend some relaxing time away. Our dogs were quite happy as well and were lounging by the river and exploring the property all day long. Gorgeous home in a beautiful setting. We would love to discourage people from this property so that it remains a secret gem but that is too selfish. The home is clean and beautifully decorated by Maria. The property is amazing and so peaceful. Sitting by the river had us hooked. Maria and Randy are excellent hosts. They are attentive and responsive. Hope everyone enjoys this perfect escape.

We loved our stay along the Piney River. We booked this property for Liberty University's graduation weekend. We were concerned about the distance from the school but this house was worth the drive. It is a beautifully remodeled home with plenty of space to stretch out in the living room or sit around the kitchen table. Sitting on the deck right along the river was the perfect way to relax after a busy weekend schedule. The owners thought of all the amenities you might need and provided for a very clean and comfortable stay. The owners also were very understanding and responsive to any questions we had.

What a wonderfully appointed respite. If you’re looking to unwind, be with people you love, and get centered…this is the place. I hesitate to tell you how lovely & welcoming Maria & Randy are because this will become a popular place to be. All the nice little touches, you forgot your toothbrush, no problem, you forgot to bring a book to read, no problem, you forgot a game to play, like I said no problem. It’s all there, just bring yourselves and let the sound of The Piney River soothe your soul. Enjoy!

We purchased the home in 2022 after falling in love with its bones, history, and scenic Piney River views. It was built in 1926. Over the years it served many purposes but had since been abandoned and was in need of a lot of TLC. After one year of renovating, it ourselves, we are excited to invite guests to enjoy the beauty it offers.

The river you hear below is called the Piney River and flows for several miles....
Nestled at the base of the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest this home is a peaceful escape and the perfect place to take a break from the city.
