If you are coming to Carmel for a quintessential Carmel stay, this is it! The house and gardens ooze charm from every corner, blending modern amenities with a classic old-Carmel vibe. We were impressed with how clean the house was, and the cozy kitchen was well equipped with higher-end pots, pans and appliances. The owner thoughtfully filled every inch of space with unique touches to make it feel like a home, not a generic vacation rental. We really appreciated the detached cottage for remote work, The house's location makes it easy to walk to both town and the beach (plus the surprise treat of being very close to the mission trails). We will definitely remember our month in Carmel very fondly, largely due to staying in such a charming house!

We had a delightful stay. A charming gem of a house both inside and outside - the epitome of a storybook Carmel experience! Beautiful patio and garden areas in a private picturesque setting. Great location for walking to the center of town. A special shout-out to Kim who was super helpful and responsive when we had questions.

Lovely courtyard

Great location to town and beach. Roomy for our family. Would be 5 stars except for very small kitchen, with minimal counter space.

We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Fair Oaks and have asked to be on our waiting list to return again next year should we have a cancellation. Our intention is to offer a true "old Carmel" experience, as we fully disclose in our description and show through photos. We often chose authentic charm over modern convenience when we worked on our property, and therefore, Fair Oaks has an original (but fully equipped) little Carmel cottage kitchen. Yet we still try very hard to make our home as welcoming and comfortable as possible. We have many guests who return year after year because they appreciate Fair Oaks' charm and the attention to detail that we bestow upon it. We are sorry that the kitchen size seemed to overshadow so many other wonderful features that we and past guests have enjoyed.

Charming old Carmel sanctuary

Fair Oaks is a special property with a magical garden and old world charm. We had a wonderful stay enjoying the comforts of this home. The bed a nd pillows and provided robes were wonderful luxuries. We enjoyed chilly nights by the fire doing puzzles. Kim was very attentive and quickly got back to us with any inquiries. Highly recommend this property which we look forward to returning to again

Fabulous Fair Oaks

From the moment we walked thru the gate of Fair Oaks, we knew this would be special, and it was. It has a storybook feel with all the charm you expect from the pictures and description of this home. This property has been loved and well cared for which you can see at every turn. The property manager, Kim, is so professional, helpful and easy to reach. Magical month in Carmel!

What an incredible and enchanting home! The attention to detail was impeccable, and our host, Kim, was simply outstanding. It's the perfect spot to escape the chaos of everyday life. The furniture and decor matched the house's theme beautifully, and the beds were unbelievably comfortable. we had friends join us for a couple of weekends, and they were equally delighted with their stay and the home's wonderful vibe. Our goldendoodle, Javier, also gives this treasure of a home a perfect 10! He did have a few run-ins with some mischievous squirrels that seemed determined to tease him in the mornings. Thankfully, by the end, they made peace and got along just fine. We can't recommend this place highly enough!!

Amazing Home and Amazing Host

Our stay at Fair Oaks was lovely and memorable. The home is inviting and warm and had ample space for our family. The guest cottage is a bonus for guests. We cooked quite a bit in the very well equipped kitchen. The grounds are beautiful and professionally maintained. A lovely patio was utilized for relaxing and enjoying the sunshine. A daily 10 minute stroll to the beach was our routine, as was biking and hiking in the area. Quick walk to town avoided having to drive and park a car. Kim was our host and she is oustanding. She was timely in her responses to our questions before and after our stay. She kept us abreast of gardeners and coordinated house cleaners. She was very helpful in referring us to a great dog groomer. Overall she was a joy to work with. While there are many homes in Carmel by the Sea, Fair Oaks is a delightful example of classic Carmel and one to enjoy!

Another Great visit to Fair Oaks.

This is our fourth visit to Fair Oaks over the last two years. We obviously like Fair Oaks very much, otherwise, we wouldn't keep coming back. One of the things that we like best is that the owners have done a great job of retaining the old charm of the home while still offering all of the modern necessities. The home is always neat and clean, well appointed and the gardens beautifully maintained. Fair Oaks is close (walking distance) to Ocean Street and the beach yet the property itself is wonderfully private. The front patio and gardens offer the perfect spot to relax and unwind after a day of taking in all that Carmel has to offer. The guest cottage is perfect for those in a group that would appreciate a little extra privacy. Patty (the owner) and Kim (the manager) are great to work with and very attentive and responsive to any issue that arises. Overall, just a wonderful home away from home. We expect to continue our trips to Carmel and our stays at Fair Oaks.

Fair Oaks our stay in Carmel

We spent the month of March 2025 in Carmel at a wonderful property called Fair Oaks. The owners have obviously put a lot of love and attention into this property as it has very comfortable beds/bedding, fully stocked with dishes/cook wear, spices, toiletries, soap, towels, dog dishes, poop bags, laundry detergent, etc… We cannot say enough about how accommodating to guests this property is. It also has a beautiful garden and sitting area that is fully fenced off, which is wonderful for our fur babies. Beautiful flowers, oak trees and a guest house complete the garden area. One of the key reasons we booked this property was due to the walkability to town and to the beach. The beach is dog friendly which was one of our highlights as our pup loved to go play with other dogs off leash on the beach. The only reason we are giving this property a 4 vs a 5 is due to the small kitchen and the quirkiness of the decor. Fair Oaks reminds of us an old European cabin filled with old and unusual things that capture your imagination. Kim was a wonderful property manager and very responsive and supportive for anything we needed. Thanks to Kim and the family who owns Fair Oaks for creating this very special place for us to enjoy all that Carmel, Monterey and the Big Sur area have to offer. Anne and John

Magical Carmel Cottage

We absolutely loved our stay at Fair Oaks! The home was charming, quaint and the absolute perfect way to spend our November. The home exceeded our expectations from the moment we walked through the front gate into the gardens and patios which just took our breath away. The bedrooms/beds were comfortable and the living areas were just delightful. We especially enjoyed the fireplace on the rainy nights. The decor was so fun, whimsical and tastefully curated. Getting into town and to the beach was just a quick walk which we enjoyed every day. The property manager, Kim, was incredibly helpful, attentive and just overall very kind and amazing. We feel so blessed to have found this wonderful little gem and plan to return!

A magical property

From the moment we walked in the front gate of Fair Oaks, we new it was a very special place. The grounds are beautifully landscaped giving the property, as our friends said, a “park like setting.” The house is perfectly Carmel with a large open living room, beamed ceiling, and a beautiful fireplace. Really liked the master bedroom being on the main floor, and the guest rooms upstairs. All of the beds have really comfortable mattresses with nice sheets and duvets. As you settle into the house you will continue to discover unique and wonderful decorating touches the owners have placed, which makes the house even more special. The guest house was very popular with our friends with its cozy feel and large bathroom. As they say in real estate, location location location, and Fair Oaks has it. Easy walk to the beach, and into town. Kim is a wonderful host. We really enjoyed working with her and appreciated her availability when we had questions and special needs. We look forward to our return to Fair Oaks and creating more special memories.

Cozy Carmel Cottage close to everything

My husband and I stayed the month of December in Carmel. We have been here many times, but this house was by far the best house we have ever rented. It is located just a short distance to town and the beach. We walked to both many times, enjoying coffee and looking at all the cute houses. The house is cozy and cute, with lots of personal touches to make you feel at home. The bed we slept in was super comfy. Having a fire at night in the living room, playing games and watching tv, was so relaxing. Kim the manager was so easy to work with and very accommodating. The house is equipped with everything you need for a memorable stay in Carmel. Wouldn’t hesitate to rent again.

Romantic & Magical!

Fair Oaks is a very very special place that needs to be experienced to be believed! I’ll admit we are spoiled and lucky enough to have stayed at the best.. We were not disappointed! There is attention to detail at every turn: top quality furniture, bedding, cooking gear, etc; warm and comfortable robes and the softest throw blankets ever; unique, whimsical decor that surprises you from the day you arrive to the day you leave! Don’t get me started on the private, amazing and gorgeous garden… You will feel like you’re living in a fairytale and you will not want to leave.

Whimiscal and Wonderous

The month spent at Fair Oaks was magical and a magical time of year. We enjoyed cold weather, minimal crowds, and the delightful residents of the city. The location was convenient for a walk to town or beach and the enclosed front yard delighted by an 18-month-old granddaughter to no end. The decor is cozy and whimsical with small hidden collections of ceramic owls or metal mice etc. The stairs are originally small and steep. So my only alert would be if you had frail guests this may be a problem for you. Kim and the staff were great. Recommend.

So peaceful and lovely!

We had a wonderful stay at Fair Oaks. The gates front garden is zen-like and so peaceful. The beds were super comfortable. It was cold at the beach so it was wonderful to come back and light a fire in the fireplace. We didn’t really cook much because the kitchen is kind of small (although well stocked). But who wants to cook on vacation anyhow??!! Definitely highly recommend Fair Oaks!!

Wonderful Cottage in Carmel

Can’t say enough about this Cottage. It was so perfect. The privacy, the comfy beds, cute kitchen with everything you need. The whimsical things you find everywhere you look. Clean and cozy and quiet. Walked every day to the beach and downtown. Enjoyed the private yard and cozy fireplace. Loved it.

Perfect cozy Carmel family home

Fair Oaks was a perfect multi-generational family Carmel getaway. Thumbs up on all counts! The house is spacious and wonderfully cozy, with delightful quirky details everywhere that make you feel instantly at home -- not like you're camping in someone else's home or, at the opposite end of the spectrum, like you're staying in a hotel, the way some rental houses feel. The house opens beautifully into the charming oak-filled garden (which is entirely hidden from the street), encouraging you to eat your meals outside and laze around reading on sunny days, and sit inside by the fire and watch the rain dripping off the oaks on rainy days. And the detached studio was a perfect bedroom for our teenage son, giving him a little space from the rest of the family. Cooking was also a pleasure at Fair Oaks: the kitchen is extraordinarily well-equipped (even plenty of cookie sheets and pie plates), and we never once found ourselves lacking for anything we needed, or trying to plan our meals around what equipment we had available. It's not a huge kitchen, but it's sizable enough to make cooking Thanksgiving dinner the usual fun for multiple cooks. In fact, the house was notably well-equipped in most ways: plenty of throw blankets for curling up on the couch, plenty of beach towels, plenty of flashlights, plenty of hangers in the closets, etc. It's also a great house if you want to leave the car at home on your vacation. In a very quiet location, but just 7 short, easy blocks walk to both of Carmel's markets (Nielsen's & Bruno's) and to lots of Carmel's terrific restaurants. The quieter (southern) end of wonderful Carmel Beach is also a short, pleasant walk downhill from the house. We definitely hope we'll be back at Fair Oaks the next time we spend time in Carmel!

Comfortable in Carmel-by-the-Sea

Fair Oaks is a comfortable, quant, and well appointed home. The property manage, Kim, was outstanding as she inquired if everything was as I wished and if there was anything she could do. She was quick to respond with the few questions I had. She was always pleasant and professional. The house was immaculate. The home is well equipped and it is clear someone put a lot of effort to ensure that every conceivable need is accommodated. All the beds are very comfortable. There is a high quality foldout sofa bed in the guest cottage that is like a regular bed when opened, and not your typical sofa bed. I'm glad the owner went the expense to provide such an upscale sofa. The rooms and guest cottage are a good size and allow guest privacy and well furnished enough for them to be separated from the group for 'alone' time. The three bathrooms are modern and well equipped with soap products, towels and paper products. They are also a nice size. The bathrobes in each bedroom are a nice touch. The great room easily accommodates eight people for watching TV and/or conversation. The home is furnished with attractive antiques that provide very good eating, closet and draw space. The wall decorations are eclectic and charming with each day you notice something new and interesting. The garden is large, beautifully landscaped, and has several areas to sit outside to enjoy it. The large trees and paths make the area enchanting. I am very glad to have stayed here for a month would have stayed another month if I could. Great place.

Enchanting place to stay!

We had an absolutely wonderful time staying here. The cottage is even more charming than it looks in the pictures, and every detail is attended to--lush bathrobes, wine and treats waiting upon arrival. The garden is beautiful, and a lovely place to sit for a morning coffee. We were three couples with two three year olds in tow and it worked perfectly. (I would note that all of the thoughtful, whimsical decorations are a perfect temptation for little ones, delighting them and keeping us parents on our toes). The guest house was so nicely furnished that it was the most coveted room! Kim did a great job coordinating and making sure we were comfortable. We enjoyed walking to town and the beach (few sidewalks, but also few cars so a kind of country feel) as well as riding bikes along the nearby 17 mile drive. I really can't say enough about how special this place is--we can't wait to go back!

Charming Cottage

This charming cottage was fabulous. It was larger than the pictures showed and most of the time we had 8 adults and it was very comfortable. The dinning room table has leafs so perfect for a family meal. It was in a perfect location to walk to beach and overbto ocean street. Lots to do nearby. We spent lots of time outside enjoying the eautiful yard. I would recommend it for an enchanting vacation.

A Very Special Place

We had such a nice visit to Carmel. The best time was staying at Fair Oaks; it is beautiful and a very special place to be. We're sure that anyone who stays there will certainly want to come again. Every detail in the home is perfect. We enjoyed the patio, either reading or having a glass of wine before going out for dinner. Thank you for having us - we loved it!
