Host & Stay | The Old Sweet Shop
Summary:
The Old Sweet Shop is a newly renovated, stylish apartment located on the south side of Whitby Harbour. The spacious two bedroom apartment sleeps four guests and is ideally placed for exploring the town. Once occupied by the towns famous âAunty Aliceâ this old sweet shop was well known by all the locals. The apartment has on-site private parking for one car.
The Space:
This bright ground floor apartment has been renovated to an extremely high standard creating a perfect space to enjoy a short stay by the coast. With a pale, neutral colour palette the apartment gives a real sense of calm.
On entering the apartment you step directly into the open plan living, dining and kitchen area. The two cool blue sofas frame the living area, surrounding a white wooden coffee table and metallic thread rug. From the feature window seat you can see the infamous Whitby Abbey, watch the world go by or enjoy the latest drama on the wall mounted, flatscreen tv.
The dining area comfortably seats four people at the simple, white and wood rectangle dining table. Centred between the kitchen and living area you can enjoy a feast for four or a romantic meal for two.
The fully equipped kitchen features cool grey doors with white speckle effect worktops and marble effect grey metro tiles. The kitchen has everything you would need for a short break including a fridge, oven, ceramic hob, microwave, kettle and washing machine. Youâll also find little luxuries such as a Nespresso coffee machine and a dishwasher. Adding a pop of colour to this open plan area are some Whitby themed fine art prints by Bridget Wilkinson.
This whole area is flooded with light from the large sash style windows. With ample space you can cook, dine and relax as a group during your stay.
Head down the hallway from the dining area and youâll find the first of the two bedrooms. With a zip and link bed you have the option to configure this as one kingsize bed or two small singles. The bed features an upholstered, Chelsea style headboard and is dressed with grey toned cushions and bed throw. With marble style bedside tables and matching lamps the room is simple and symmetrical.
Head back to the hallway and youâll find the bathroom. The bathroom includes a WC, basin and large walk in shower. It feels fresh and modern with chrome fixtures and fittings and large white ceramic tiles on the walls and floor.
The second bedroom can be found at the end of the hallway. This room features a double bed with a mink coloured fabric headboard and dressed with blue and grey patterned cushions. The room is finished off with geometric patterned lamps and artwork by Bridget Wilkinson.
Taking its name from what it once was, The Old Sweet Shop is a generous, bright and airy space, ideal for those looking for a little bit of calm away from the busy cobbled streets of Whitby.
Once a hidden trove of delicious hard boiled sweets and tasty chocolates, the children would scurry down the hill to use the coin machines at the front of the shop. Aunty Alice and her sisters ran the shop right through the war years and into the early 1980âs creating many sweet memories during some hard times.
Guest Access:
Guests have access to the full property.
The keys to the property are accessed via a secure key safe and full details will be provided shortly before your arrival date.
The Neighborhood:
Located in Spital Bridge in Whitby, The Old Sweet Shop is a lovely harbourside less than a 10-minute walk to the town centre. There youâll find narrow, medieval streets dotted with boutiques, pubs and fish restaurants. You can climb the famous 199 steps up to the Church of Saint Mary. You can also discover the renowned ruined Whitby Abbey, which was the inspiration for Bram Stokerâs gothic novel âDraculaâ.
On the other side of the River Esk, youâll come across cosy pubs, fun arcades and even more fish restaurants on Pier Road. Venture along the lively road and youâll reach the beautiful, blue flag West Cliff Beach which is lined with idyllic beach huts.
Getting Around:
The centre of Whitby is a short ten-minute walk from The Old Sweet Shop.
Whitby train station is less than 15-minutes away on foot so villages and towns along the North Yorkshire coast can easily be reached via rail. Thereâs also a taxi rank in close proximity to the train station.
There are plenty of bus routes throughout Whitby. Hop on the X4 and you can visit beautiful coastal villages like Sandsend, Runswick Bay and Staithes. The X93 travels along the coast to Scarborough. The 95 route features plenty of quaint villages, such as Grosmont and Lealholm.
