In the immediate vicinity, the sands at Borth-y-Gest are of particular interest to birdwatchers as they are home to a wide variety of species of birds including oystercatchers, redshanks and curlew, as well as winter visitors such as goldeneye, great crested grebe and wigeon. Summer brings flocks of sandwich terns.

Several beautiful beaches are within easy walking distance along the well maintained coastal path leading directly from the village centre. The sea is safe to swim on a low to incoming tide.

Meanwhile the village is largely surrounded by woodland, much of it deciduous and dominated by ancient Welsh oaks. Directly to the rear of Tegfryn is Parc y Borth nature reserve. Parc y Borth woods is a local nature reserve long popular with walkers and ornithologists, and among the birdlife you might be lucky to spot green woodpeckers, tawny owls and pied flycatchers. An extensive network of paths will lead you from a public footpath running alongside Tegfryn through the woods to the top of a crag with extensive views of the Glaslyn and Dwyryd estuaries.

The road leading into Borth-y-Gest is a no-through road so that the roads are very quiet, being occupied by local traffic only.

A 10 minute walk to the east will take you into the popular harbour town of Porthmadog where there is a large selection of shops and restaurants. A harbour town with an impressive marina is situated on the Glaslyn Estuary. Porthmadog is rich in maritime history and in times gone by, it was a vital, busy shipping port for the international slate trade, brought down from Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Both the Welsh Highland Railway and Ffestiniog Railway can be boarded at Porthmadog.

The stunning location of the Porthmadog golf club is only one mile from Tegfryn. The links golf course offers an intriguing mixture of heathlands and linksland for the discerning golfer.

The Snowdonia National Park begins a mere 2 miles from Tegfryn and is a magnificent playground for those who love walking, mountain climbing or just scenery watching.

The Park covers 823 square miles of diverse landscapes. As well as being the largest National Park in Wales, Snowdonia boasts the highest mountain in Wales, and the largest natural lake in Wales, as well as a wealth of picturesque villages like Beddgelert (8miles).

Snowdonia is renowned for being a very special place for walkers with mountain peaks, lakes, forests, rivers and coastal areas. The National Park is working on developing a network of walks and more will be added every year. In addition Snowdonia National Park has a vast amount of cycling and mountain biking trails suitable for all abilities. The Park also hosts other outdoor activities such as white water rafting and climbing.

Portmeirion is a popular tourist village located just outside of Porthmadog, approximately 3 miles from Tegfryn. It is Wales’ 3rd largest visitor attraction attracting 250, 000 visitors in 2009.

Portmeirion was designed and built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925 and 1975 in the style of an Italian village, which is now is now acknowledged as a unique architectural work of art. The village is now owned by a charitable trust.

The village stands on a rugged cliff top on its own private peninsula overlooking Cardigan Bay. It is surrounded by 145 acres of sub-tropical woodlands and miles of sandy beaches. The village has always been run as a hotel, which uses the majority of the buildings as hotel rooms, together with shops, a cafe, tea-room, and restaurant.

Portmeirion has served as the location for numerous films and television shows, most famously serving as The Village in the 1960s television show The Prisoner. The show became a cult classic, and fans continue to visit Portmeirion, which hosts annual Prisoner fan conventions.

Birthday weekend stay

An incredible house and location, so much fun exploring the area, playing frisbee on the beach. Amazing balcony to watch the sun rise over the mountains upon and listen to the old train. The kitchen and loving areas where well equiped with equpiment however no consumables including salt and pepper, not a complaint just observation to be more clear to future guests. I would definitely recommend the property!

Fabulous house in a fabulous location

Very roomy house in a lovely location. Probably one of the best equipped and furnished properties I have rented. Check in was very easy and there was plenty of information from the owner about the property on wifi and other equipment etc. Would definitely rent this house again if visiting the area. Thank you for a lovely stay

Climb every mountain

Let me say we had a great stay for 4 days. Great weather bar 1 day. So quiet and peaceful. Fantastic view to wake up to. Lovely house and location. I will stress though, the climb up to the property. The description doesn’t hide the fact of the climb but if you have any slight physical challenge, think seriously about it. It’s quite a climb up steps and a screw slope, although there is another way in to the side of the property which consists of all steps. This feels safer under foot. The grandchildren loved it. The walk into Porthmadog is more like 20/25 minutes and goes involve 2 short, steep hills. Thoroughly recommend Tegfryn. We didn’t have any stuff left for washing machine and made go without in the end. However, I needed to contact housekeeping and had to leave a message. The lady rang me back promptly and answered my question so I’m sure no washing powder was an oversight.

Excellent.......................

The house was lovely, stunning views. Did have a bit of trouble locating the property, and the slop up to the house is a bit precarious with loose stones, but saying that I would definitely go back.

Tegfryn views just the best

What a gorgeous property with the most stunning views across the bay. The owner didn’t lie about the steps we had them off to a tee box the end of the week. So many gorgeous beaches in the area and castles to visit. Portmerion and the railway were also close by with Beaumaris castle and Anglesey sea zoo we had a great week. The owner is quick to sort out an issue we had and gave great advice about the area and places to eat. A great property at a great location would highly recommend.

Enjoyable stay

The climb up to the house is a bit steep, but the view is well worth it when there. The Robin is quite tame whilst you sit looking at the view. The house has everything you need for your stay. I can recommend ‘Sea View’ a few doors down for a meal, but you have to book ahead, even for a takeaway.

Beautiful Borth-y-Gest

The property was very clean and beautifully and tastefully furnished. It had everything you would have at home and more so there were no hassles at all. It had beautiful views. The only problem was to get the views it was quite a climb up to the house. This could perhaps have been made clearer in the details because elderly or disabled people would not have been able to get up there

Fantastic hidden gem!

My husband I recently stayed here In September. We were lucky with the weather as had sun everyday. Highly recommended. From the moment we booked to the moment we departed it was a wonderful experience. The property itself and the location are amazing. We did not take our dog with us but it was a great find and plan to take her with us next time. Location is fab and the views are outstanding. Very covid safe in the current climate. Look forward to staying again sometime soon.

Beautiful location. House is great - spacious, clean and well equipped. Lovely cafe/restaurant in the village within walking distance. Only draw back is the parking in the road and the walk up to the house - everything else makes this a great house and location.

Beautiful house in amazing location

We (2 families) had a fantastic week in this property over New Year. The view over the estuary, from the house being up the hill slightly, made each morning, when I opened the curtains. We then walked the dog and children along the beach, around the coast to explore all the hidden coves. A coffee at the cafe after a walk was very welcome. We appreciated having 2 lounges, as it allowed the children to play in one and the adults to chat in another. Having the Wii in the second lounge was a big hit. The house was extremely well equipped. I think it was the first time I have been to a property and found nothing lacking in terms of kitchen equipment. Something else we really appreciated was the lack of bossy notices!! Often properties have notices all over the place saying things like "Please don't...this and that"! The owners of this property seem to allow you to use your common sense and don't spoil the house with endless notices. A breathe of fresh air. There is however a very informative folder about the property and local attractions. We stayed pretty local although we did climb Snowdon. Couldn't believe that all that beautiful mountain scenery was so close by. We were lucky in that we climbed on a clear day and the views from the top were splendid. We visited Criccieth and its castle. Amazing views over the still sea. We walked to Porthmadoc along by the harbour. So quick and easy to access all the shops and other services we needed. We also went to Portmeirion which is quite a quirky place but worth a visit. All in all a brilliant stay in a perfect house.

A lovely welcoming home and well equipped home with breathtaking views.

Although we had bad weather our family so enjoyed staying at Borth y Gest. The views were so lovely and well worth the uphill trek. The short walk to Black Rock Sands leads you to a stunning sandy bay - stop at the moorings for breakfast on the way - really nice. If you’re there on Sunday the 3 places to eat are closed by 4 so eat in nearby Port Madog. Port Merrion just a 6 minutes drive away - and once again the heavens opened on us yet we still had a great day in this quirky beautiful theme village. If you go book the day before for discount. 3 nights was not long enough to enjoy all the area has to offer- we love the llyn peninsula with it’s beautiful beaches and of course Snowdonia but we didn’t have time to visit all these places. We are hoping our grandchildren’s half terms coincide so we can make a longer visit next year- fantastic holiday home

Lovely view and peaceful environment

Wonderful clean and well maintained with an amazing view cottage. Our family of 6 (4 adult and 2 children ages 7 &3) had a lovely time and were very comfortable! The linens were of nice quality as were the mattress' and pillows. The kitchen is amply stocked with more than plenty plates, glassware and coffee/tea cups. There were also Ikea kids plates, bowls and silverware. The location is lovely, we did get a bit lost finding the place but otherwise everything else was a snap and well organized. Would highly recommend to anyone without walking impairments as it is up a little hill and with no direct parking or drive way would be difficult for those not able to traverse such terrains. The water and heat were easy to operate and the worked well. The showers are a good size as is the bathtub for kids. Our girls enjoyed the bunk beds and the games & movies provided. Overall we would love to visit again and Jane was a lovely helpful host!!

Lovely property/Location

Had a great time with friends and children. Great property, tastefully decorated, most equipped kitchen we have ever had, in relation to crockery/utensils etc. Small things like salt/pepper etc. being provided just made things a little easier. Great views from property. We had good beach walks and walked into Portmadog, Tremadog and Portmeiron. Quite a few pubs allow dogs, our best meals were at Australia bar in Portmadog and Golden Fleece in Tremadog. Good breakfast at The Big Rock Cafe. Would definitely recommend this property and stay again
