The space Grade II Listed Victorian Cottage with views of Glastonbury Abbey
Sunlight comes in the front windows for a lot of the day and the evening sunsets across the Abbey ruins can be beautiful.
The locking front porch can used for keeping shoes and boots and we ask you take your footwear off when you in the house. There are three steps up from the pavement level into the house.
It has a comfy living room with two settees, a Smart TV and a wood burner in the original fireplace. There are plenty of books on locally inspired topics, some guided walk books and a selection of general books.
The lovely kitchen/dining room is all recently renovated and fitted new, with a dishwasher and washer/dryer and fridge/freezer, rangemaster cooker and plenty of crockery and cookware. Pictures and items of local interest add that special Glastonbury feel to the space.
A back lobby leads to the stairs and to the peaceful courtyard garden which is not overlooked. The lobby has coat hooks for coats etc.
Upstairs there is a bedroom with a four poster king size bed and exposed stone wall. The second bedroom is part of a two room original layout, the first room having a single bed and the connecting bedroom through it has another king size pine bed. Care has been taken in selecting charming furniture, pictures and decor to enhance the special feel of the rooms.
All the windows are original Georgian sash windows and glass that are over 150 years old, each individually hand-restored, so take care with opening and closing. Bespoke Shutters and curtains are fitted so you can enjoy the features without suffering draughts like in the 1800s! Also a brand new CH system is fitted with adjustable valves on radiators, and a NEST thermostat to ensure modern comfort is met.
The small bathroom is fitted with a standard bath with shower overhead. A combi boiler ensures a constant flow of hot water.
There is no parking at the property but the Silver St car park (pay by phone or machine) is just across the road and there are some free bays immediately opposite the house, although these are popular with local residents but are not restricted to residents only. There is also plenty of parking within Glastonbury town itself although of course it is busy on market days and popular periods.
As a listed and older property, Abbeyview has a very old fabric with lathe and plaster walls and ceilings, and rubble stone exterior walls with a later addition ‘fashion of the times’ brick frontage. The stairs are narrow and steep with an 1800s handrail which is not weight-bearing, and is for light support only. You will see exposed lintels of beautiful ancient oak (most likely from Baltic shipping timbers brought to the UK after the Crimea) and evidence of the stone rubble-built walls, with occasional hints of (purloined) smooth chunks of the Abbey limestone! The ceilings are on the low side but not as much as some period properties but do mind your head walking though doors etc if you are on the tall side.
Because of the nature of the cottage, it is not suitable for anyone with mobility/access issues or children/pets. . Guest access Whole house excluding shed in courtyard, linen cupboard in back lobby and attic Other things to note No smoking and no pet policy No infants. Children over 14 only.
This is a listed old building and is not suitable for those with mobility issues due to the narrowness and steepness of the stairs.
There are three steps to access the downstairs from the kerbside.

À propos de l’hôte
Votre hôte
Glastonbury has been calling me back every year since the late 1980s. And this cottage is the one I stayed in the first time I visited. After many years of dreaming about owning a property in Glastonbury, I found out that Abbeyview was for sale. She was in a very poor state, but after a couple of years of planning applications and working with a wonderful group of builders, carpenters, and trademen who love old houses, she has been adapted and restored to be a beautiful home from home, full of her old parts, but embracing modern services.
I have loved this whole journey and know that staying in her will offer the welcome, peace and comfort that everyone should have on a lovely trip.
Voici ce qui rend cet hébergement unique
Abbeyview is a listed building with the original building downstairs in the lounge and back lobby dating back to perhaps around 1690. Much adaptation seems to have occurred in the mid 1800s with expansion and an upstairs. Further division of the upstairs has occurred, and then some unhappy renovations in the 1970s, which now thankfully are reversed and contemporary quality achieved sympathetically.
She overlooks Glastonbury Abbey ruins on a quiet street parallel to the main High Street, So so central and so peaceful! You could not get anywhere in the world to sleep closer to King Arthur's legendary burial site!
