À propos de cet hébergement
Cooper’s Cabin on the Cacapon
20 minute drive from historic Berkeley Springs, WV you will find yourself at our secluded mountain retreat. Perched 150 feet above the Cacapon River with 270 degree views on 20 acres of mountain sits our newly renovated 4 bedroom 2 bath cabin. With 1,000 feet of river front in our backyard, there are endless outdoor excursions, including canoeing (1 on property) kayaking (3 single kayaks on property) fishing, tubing, hiking, bird watching (two eagle nests are 200 yards away- we see them often), star gazing, and much more.
In addition to all the outdoor amenities, the cabin features all new appliances and furniture and was renovated in winter of 2020. Relax in our 72 gallon bath tub, take a steam in our new steam shower, enjoy either side of our double sided fireplace or just read a book on our back deck with views for days to name a few cabin activities. The cabin was originally built and lived in by the the famous curator of the National History Museum, Grace Rogers Cooper, which is why we have named our cabin Coopers Cabin.
Nearby Berkeley Springs, WV is named one of America’s top 10 historic small towns. Made famous for its healing natural springs that George Washington himself frequented, the town now houses multiple spas. Berkeley Springs has all types of restaurants including fine dining, coffee shops, breweries and a winery. Cacapon State Park is also nearby and features hiking, swimming, playgrounds, and a Robert Trent Jones designed golf course.
5 minutes from our house in Largent, WV is ‘The Country Store’ which has all your basic needs for groceries, beer and sandwiches.
15 minutes away is Paw Paw, WV with gas, a bakery, and a Dollar General. It is also home to the famous Paw Paw Tunnel. Built in 1850, this tunnel on the C&O canal is over 3,000 long and is short hike from the road.
We have satellite WiFi, Dish network, endless movie collections and spotty cell phone service depending on your carrier (AT&T is very spotty, Verizon and T-Mobile/Sprint are better but still limited). **Daily max on internet use but typically only an issue when streaming video.
Note - we live a mile away and out of sight of, but not out of hearing distance from a ranch that hosts the occasional cowboy style shooting tournament. Their matches are select dates - March 28, April 18, and September 24-26 - but they have occasional practice days on Saturdays/Sundays typically on the third weekend of the month. You may hear gunshots from their place during the day in those days. West Virginia is indeed wild and wonderful. Learn more about CASS and view their calendar here: www.wvcass.org.

Great weekend!
We had a wonderful time at this cabin! Views were exactly as advertised -- stunning! Very nice remodel on the lower level bedrooms, comfortably rustic main room and kitchen. We did have a small issue with the upstairs shower/tub combo that led to some water on the floor, but we eventually figured it out. Lots of bugs inside, but that's to be expected for the time of year.

Remote getaway
Very remote cabin overlooking the Cacapon river. You need to be comfortable with the wilderness and with being off the grid. The owners provided a complete check-in information email before we arrived as well as additional information and brochures inside the home. The cell service, as advised by the owner, was next to zero for us and the wi-fi was not extraordinarily strong, but it functioned well enough.
The view from the rear windows of the cabin was amazing. From the back deck, however, it was not so inviting with many dead trees immediately surrounding the house just cut down and left to rot.
The kitchen was nice and was well stocked with all the basic needs. Loved the sink!! No microwave, but we managed reheating food on stove or oven. The bathrooms were genuinely nice with lovely design features and there was a lovely large soaking tub, however, the shower on main level with this tub was a hot mess. Poor drainage and accumulation of water was a hassle to deal with despite the owner’s advice on managing this problem. The bedrooms were nice. The large bedroom on the lower level had a patio door but the walk out area was overgrown. A stone patio would have been nice to maybe enjoy a cup of coffee and watch the sun rise. The main log cabin living space is very cozy and comfortable, with the awesome original fireplace in the center of the room. The windows were all dirty and streaky so we cleaned them up a bit so that we could enjoy the beautiful sunsets from the inside while prepping meals or eating. Bugs were an issue, so you need to be prepared with DEET products. We did suffer with several bites despite using bug spray.
The surrounding property was a bit more difficult to explore as the area was steep and many downed dead trees. Close to the house there is a nice firepit and although the owners provided firewood, we collected some additional small kindling to get it going. However, the embers from the fire were concerning enough to put the fire out with the danger of so many dead trees close by the house. We did not take advantage of the kayak and canoe, but our guys did some fishing down at the riverside. The trek down to the river was a bit much for us 50 something year old ladies.
We did get up to Berkeley Springs and checked out the local breweries and restaurants from the brochures provided by the owners. Loved the castle overlooking the town. Also went to Paw Paw and cycled the trail along the Potomac. Overall it was great!

Wonderful!
We had a fantastic stay at this beautiful home! The views from the deck were unbelievable and the home was clean and lovely. The beds were comfy and the teens enjoyed having their own downstairs space. The river was fun and we enjoyed kayaking, fishing, and just relaxing! Would highly recommend staying here!

Beautiful mountain getaway location!
We were the first renters for this new listing and our family (2 adults, 2 kids, 4 and 9, and dog) was really taken by this cabin on the hillside. The view from the back deck and the rear windows of the cabin are amazing.
The owners provided very helpful and complete check-in information before we arrived and were very responsive to questions that arose while we were there. The cell service was definitely close to zero for us and the wi-fi is not particularly zippy, but it functioned well enough for messaging and basic browsing. Because of the wi-fi cap, we used our streaming services' offline downloading capabilities to arrive with a few movies and kid shows, which worked perfectly.
The kitchen is pretty well stocked with basic needs (at the time of our stay there was no microwave, and a pretty bad drip coffee maker, which we suggested as potential areas of improvement). Kitchen pantry storage space is a bit limited, especially for larger groups. The bathrooms are nice and there is a lovely large soaking tub. Waking up to the view from the main upstairs bedroom is pretty fantastic.
The main log cabin living space is very cozy and comfortable, with the awesome original fireplace in the center of the room. The listing mentions that stink bugs sometimes appear indoors -- they were certainly present in fairly large numbers during our stay.
The surrounding property is a lot of fun to explore, our dog especially loved getting to poke around. We had a warm day and were able to take advantage of the kayak and canoe and do some fishing down at the riverside. The water was fairly shallow and the current was not too swift, which was great for being there with kids and a dog. (Accessing the river where the kayaks and canoe are stored is not the easiest path if you try to get there directly from the house -- the easiest path down requires heading back to the top of the driveway and then down to the river.) Close to the house there is a nice firepit for marshmallows and hotdog roasting. The owners provided firewood, which made it easy to set up a fire.
If you get up to Berkeley Springs, check out Fairfax Coffee House - (amazing biscuit egg sandwiches and try the 808 panini sandwich!). The Country Store just down the road from the cabin worked well for basic needs, like beverages, snacks, and fast food type meals.
Overall, this is a great property with very nice owners and we look forward to returning!
