Neighborhood description
Bayamón is a city, municipality of Puerto Rico and suburb of San Juan located in the northern coastal valley, north of Aguas Buenas and Comerío; south of Toa Baja and Cataño; west of Guaynabo; and east of Toa Alta and Naranjito. Bayamón is known as "El Pueblo del Chicharrón" (fried pig skin city), considered the best in Puerto Rico. Chicharrón is made with different seasoned cuts of pork (also made with chicken) andeep-frieded. The town was established on May 22, 1772, by Juan Ramírez de Arrellano. Bayamón derives its name from a local Indian chief, Bahamon. However, others claim that the name came from the Taíno word Bayamóngo, which is the name of one of the rivers that crossed the city. Bayamón is part of the metropolitan area of San Juan and is the island's second most populous city. Bayamón is considered to be the most progressive city of the island. There are museums exhibiting the works of treasured local artists, an interactive science park perfect for families, and a thriving bar scene — all of which make it a great day trip from the capital. Museo Francisco Oller Nestled in a neoclassical building that once housed City Hall, the Museo de Arte Francisco Oller showcases the work of beloved Puerto Rican painter Francisco Oller At age 14, Oller shocked his countrymen with his artistic talent and went on to become the only Latin American artist involved in the development of Impressionism. After a stint in France, Oller returned to Puerto Rico to paint some of the most astonishing pictures and portraits of his era. The museum also exhibits the works of many other Puerto Rican artists, including Tomás Batista, Consuelo Gotay, and Lorenzo Homar. Paseo Lineal Take a break from the hustle and bustle of Bayamón at its Central Park, or Paseo Lineal, a family-friendly green space with many scenic pathways and trails. Running for several miles along the Bayamón River, the park is perfect for walking and running, biking, skating.
