The Mac House - With a Hot Tub!

Unique architectural style meets Black Mountain neighborhood charm. This designer space stimulates the artists-at-heart and provides a gracefully modern space suitable for a long or short-term stay. Located on a quiet street in the heart of town, you'll have easy access to all Black Mountain has to offer. Take a 15min stroll downtown to enjoy local shops and restaurants or a 5min walk to Lake Tomahawk. Additionally, you'll be less than a 10min drive from the beautiful hiking trails of Montreat.

The Mac House is a very special place and we couldn't be more excited to share it with you.

Those familiar with the Black Mountain architecture and design world will recognize the home as one designed and built by Horace McGuire “Mac” Wood. Horace was a “small house designer” who was part of the faculty at Black Mountain College in the early 1940s where he taught design and construction. After his career at the college, Mac designed homes throughout Black Mountain over the course of the next two decades. This home was built in 1947 and recently renovated with careful intention to keep the spirit of the home’s design intact.

Though quirky in style, the home is highly functional for all aspects of living, including a kitchen/dining area; a living room overlooking the backyard; a master bedroom with an adjoining half-bathroom; and an additional room which can be utilized as a workspace, studio, or additional bedroom. The house has a new front and back porch, which are ideal spaces to enjoy the serene environment the home is enveloped by.

You will enjoy access to the entire home during your stay. For your convenience, the house is set up for contactless self check-in with a lock box.

Grab your morning coffee and walk outside to the lake, where you can enjoy the beautiful half-mile trail. In the evenings after 7:30pm, the nearby golf course cart path is available to the public for an after-dinner stroll to see the stars.

Have a large group and need more room? Our sister location, The Carriage House, can sleep up to 4 (a well designed studio with a queen bed, couch, and room for air mattress) and is situated next door to the Mac house, sharing all the perks of its location. Book both to accommodate a larger party!

From the first, our host Michael welcomed us into our home away from home for a week and gave us some advice on the hot tub and other necessities. The hot tub is always a great idea when we spend each day hiking the mountains. It was really hot 104 degrees and spacious. The location was unbeatable, close to town and within easy reach of trails. Overall, a worthwhile stay at a nice place. We’ll be back!

We LOVED LOVED LOVED our stay here. The host was very responsive leading up to our stay and provided easy instructions for check in and check out. We adored this house and really enjoyed the quaint charm. The hot tub was a real treat and was very clean. Really appreciated the hosts helping to make our stay comfortable traveling with our baby. The neighborhood itself was quiet and lovely. Super close to a nearby park and Lake Tomahawk, which we walked around and enjoyed the scenic mountains.

My mom and I had the pleasure of calling this cute and quirky little house home for a week. Just a few minutes driving distance from downtown Black Mountain, and within walking distance from a beautiful lake, the house is very easy to locate and check in was very easy. The house itself was very clean (sometimes lake houses can tend to be a little spidery and dusty in my experience, but this house was not). The hosts have done a great job at providing anything you may find yourself needing throughout your stay and even provide things like sound machines to help you sleep if you’re used to white noise. Each room has its own AC unit and they do a wonderful job at maintaining a comfortable temperature throughout the house. The hot tub was in immaculate condition and very simple to operate and get open and closed. Although there are other houses around you, the yard still gives you the sense of being secluded while you enjoy the outdoor spaces. Check out was also very simple, sometimes it feels like you are expected to complete a 20 step process before leaving but the hosts only ask that you gather up towels. The hosts did a great job at communicating everything with us and were very personable. Staying in this area gives you great access to surrounding towns, the blue ridge parkway and beautiful hiking trails, with most things outside of Black Mountain being between a 30-90 minute drive.

Cozy Stay in Great Location

We enjoyed our 4 night stay in your sweet cottage. Loved the upstairs lounge, bedroom and patio with access to the hot tub! The kitchen was compact but well stocked and the location was perfect. We walked to the lake every day. The shower is a bit tiny, but other than that, the cottage was perfect for us!

Perfect home for a little weekend getaway! It was so fun to explore this area but then be able to go back to such a charming and comfortable space. It was convenient to everything in Black Mountain but it was also a quick and easy drive to Asheville. The home was stocked with all the essentials, plenty of linens, and fun games/books. The host was communicative and had plenty of recommendations for us during our stay. We hope to be able to visit again soon!

Lovely stay

This home was just great - it was probably our favorite place we’ve ever stayed. Very well equipped with necessary items, comfortable, and so cute. Not to mention the hot tub! Walking distance to Black Mountain and Tomohawk Lake. Highly recommend, we will be back.

Love the town of Black Mountain. This treasure of a town offers everything you need for a quiet getaway or if you are in the Ashville area for work. Great food, music, and shopping. Beautiful Mountain Town Cabin

The Mac House was super cute, thoughtfully furnished and designed, and close to black mountain and Asheville while still being cozy and private. Beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces, and host was great about checking in and providing recommendations for the best experience in Black Mountain. Also appreciated how easy check in and check out were, no complicated key systems or excessive cleaning required :) 10/10 would recommend for a couples weekend getaway. Would definitely rebook in the future!

Mac house

The house was close to a man-made lake (Park)with a nice walking trail just a block away. Less than 5 minutes to town, shopping, groceries, and restaurants. I'm 6'4" and had to duck through a couple of doors upstairs, but was very happy with our stay.

Great Little Spot!

We really enjoyed our stay. Great hosts that went above and beyond to make us comfortable. The home had everything we could’ve needed… seriously, we could’ve left at least one bag at home from all the things packed into this little house. Great location, the walk to downtown is right at 15 minutes, but be warned that it’s almost straight uphill! The good news is coming back is almost all downhill! Highly recommend for anyone that needs just enough space to call home for a few days in Black Mountain!

Small but mighty Mac House

Easy check in and out with everything you need in an experience of a “small” home! The property is exactly how stated and pictured. The location is perfect with easy access to all Black Mountain has to offer, and a short drive to Asheville. We had a bear visit for a late night snack from the trash bin (I still choose to believe it was a raccoon) and the owners were very responsive to that and felt like you were talking with a friend. You can’t go wrong staying here!

Supreme Black Mountain Stay

The history and character of this special place is minimally yet thoughtfully and efficiently expressed in every detail. From the original design to the recent renovations, the space just feels amazing and fits perfectly into this sweet Mountain community. Michael was incredibly. He and his wife have done an incredible job fixing this place up and providing guests with all they need for an amazing stay. We walked to town each day and back- lovely, safe neighborhood. Hope to return.

Wonderful home and host in Black Mountain!

My husband and I spent three days at the Mac House and couldn't have asked for a better stay! The property was clean, beautifully decorated, super functional, well stocked, and in a fantastic location - walking distance to Lake Tomahawk and minutes from town. Unfortunately, we were so busy we didn't have time to use the new hot tub, but it's right off of the porch and very private. Also really liked the yard with the fire pit in back. The host, Michael, was super helpful and responsive. We highly recommend this property and will definitely stay there again.

Loved the Mac House

We had such a great stay at the Mac House visiting Black Mountain for the first time. The house lives large despite its small stature with an upstairs/downstairs as well as front and back decks our family of 3 including teenager had plenty of room to spread out.The house is clean, everything works and has such a cool aesthetic and vibe. Center of black mountain is an easy 15 min walk and minutes to drive. Montreat is very short drive and all the hiking trails there seemed to be open. Downtown Asheville about 15-20 min drive.We loved our stay and will make Mac House our new destination and launching point for future drips to Asheville area!

Great cozy home in a perfect location & accommodating host!

We really enjoyed our time in Black Mountain. The house was cozy and had all the essentials we needed to cook some meals and enjoy relaxed evenings. Small touches were noticed - including coffee/tea for us & a basket of toys for our toddler. Michael (host) responded promptly with issues - including the water being too cold - and fixed it immediately (thanks!). The location is ideal - a 5 minute walk to a cute little lake loop with a playground and 15 minute hilly walk to town where there are lots of nice restaurants (try TrailHead!) and cute shops. There are also nice hikes nearby - Montreat (10 mins away) and some longer hikes within an hour away. Would definitely stay here again :)

Had a marvelous time on a long weekend. This was the perfect cozy place for a couples’ retreat. The house is very modern considering its history and age. It’s located in a quiet neighborhood just a couple blocks from Lake Tomahawk and all the activities available there. For walkers, it’s just 10-15 minutes from downtown. It’s an uphill walk for the first part, but so worth it when you don’t have to worry about parking! The upstairs bedroom is comfortable (VERY comfy bed!) with its own 1/2 bath. The only shower is in the ground floor bathroom. There’s a second bed in a nook off of the kitchen, so it comfortably sleeps more than 2 people, but it’s a very intimate space and would get crowded quickly with more adults. The hot tub does have privacy screening on both sides, but it also faces the houses in the back across the alley. This small but mighty house has pretty much everything you need including a well stocked kitchen, TVs in each bedroom and the sitting room upstairs, an airy deck, fire pit, washer/dryer, and an overall sense of bright relaxation! The host is wonderful! He was easy to communicate with and so very welcoming. I will 100% stay at the Mac House again the next time we’re looking for time in Black Mountain! The perfect home base escape to catch your breath for a while.

My Wife & I grew up in the Atlanta suburbs. 5 years in the Marine Corps had us out in San Diego, CA, crewing the Heavy Lift Helicopter CH-53e. Once that adventure came to an end, we moved to Fort Collins, CO while attending Colorado State University. Post graduation and the addition of our oldest, we moved back to the East Coast, where we were fortunate enough to stumble upon beautiful Black Mountain.

Trail running, hiking, river activities, and camping are some of our favorite activities. When in town, we love to enjoy the local breweries and delicious restaurants.

We love being host on short term rental platforms. Having an opportunity to meet folks from around the world while sharing this wonderfully quirky home in this incredible little town is a true joy.

The attention to detail on the design front has created an incredibly comfortable vibe that almost forces you to slow down a little, which lines up perfectly with the slower pace of life that comes with this wonderful little town. Additionally, the high end hot tub and outdoor deck space (both in the front & back of house) allows ample opportunities to sit down and take in the fresh mountain air.
