The Chestnut House

The perfect place for you and your family to rest, unplug, enjoy novice trout fishing, and stargaze under the clean country sky.

Welcome to the Chestnut House. This recently renovated riverfront home is a blend of historic charm and modern elegance. Originally built in 1926 as a log cabin made of real chestnut, it has since been used as a US Post office, country market, and later a house in 1936. The home is nestled between the Cardinal and Little Priest mountains in the Blue Ridge Range and the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest.

The main attraction of the Chestnut House is the outdoors. Just a step away from the back door is the Piney River. Enjoy the sounds of this rushing river from the beautiful sundeck furnished with Adirondak chairs, or the picnic tables, rock fire-pit, or hammock. This two-story cottage offers scenic river and mountain views, a wood stove, chef’s kitchen, and sleeping accommodations for up to six guests. Open the windows and enjoy the sounds of the rushing Piney River and nature throughout the house.

A fun fact about the home: Growing on the side of the home facing the river is a very old, almost extinct, American Chestnut Tree. This is why we call it the “Chestnut House”.

Lastly, don’t forget your fishing rods! Native brook trout and wild brown trout populate the river.

Beautiful house right on the river. We had an amazing time just sitting outside listening to the sound of the water rolling by. Inside, the house is impeccable with everything you need to spend some relaxing time away. Our dogs were quite happy as well and were lounging by the river and exploring the property all day long. We loved our stay along the Piney River. We booked this property for Liberty University's graduation weekend. We were concerned about the distance from the school but this house was worth the drive. It is a beautifully remodeled home with plenty of space to stretch out in the living room or sit around the kitchen table. Sitting on the deck right along the river was the perfect way to relax after a busy weekend schedule. The owners thought of all the amenities you might need and provided for a very clean and comfortable stay. The owners also were very understanding and responsive to any questions we had.

Gorgeous home in a beautiful setting. We would love to discourage people from this property so that it remains a secret gem but that is too selfish. The home is clean and beautifully decorated by Maria. The property is amazing and so peaceful. Sitting by the river had us hooked. Maria and Randy are excellent hosts. We felt welcomed from the moment we arrived! The property is incredibly peaceful and calming. I loved sitting at the picture window each morning and having coffee while looking out at the snow covered landscape and the flowing water of the river! The decor and color palette used throughout are perfection. After a day exploring outside we loved coming in to cook warm meals and settle down by the fire at night. Would definitely consider staying again!

This was singlehandedly one of the nicest vacation homes we have ever stayed as a family! The amount of detail, thought and care Maria put into this home was evident from the moment we pulled up to the house. From the little handwritten note they left us along with fresh eggs and bottle of wine, we immediately felt welcomed in the home. Every little thing we needed was taken care of, to include kids plates/cups, charcoal, toiletries, and even charcuterie boards! The outdoor space was probably our favorite. Even though the house was wonderful, we spent 90% of our time by the river teaching our kids how to fish, playing soccer, hanging out by the fire, or just taking in nature. I felt completely at peace in this home and we are so grateful for being able to enjoy this little oasis. Thank you for having us and we hope to be back soon!

This was by far the best property I’ve stayed at so far! Communication was amazing and there is a binder that has all of the information you could need. Including points of interest nearby for food, entertainment, etc. Wonderful views and a nice getaway location to connect with nature and relax to the sound of the river water right in the back yard.

The Piney River house far exceeded our expectations and was perfect in every way. The home itself is cozy, beautifully decorated and very functional. WOW...The property exterior and interior were amazing!!!. Lovely creekside cottage

We all loved the cottage in Alhambra. The setting was amazing and peaceful tucked in among the mountains and overlooking the creek. The inside was lovely and our hosts had the place outfitted to fill all of our needs. This was one of our favorite stays!
