A car is handy for exploring more of the area; on-site paid parking is limited, so arrange it in advance. Rideshares are easy to come by, and the local Water Taxi is a fun way to see the canals. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and Port Everglades cruise port are both a short drive away.
