À propos de cet hébergement

Last Hurrah, Female Hogan

Bring food and anything you'd like to drink beside water. No stores out here.
The road is mostly dirt. Normally you won't need 4-wheel drive but you will need six or so inches of ground clearance. Most SUVs, Jeeps, trucks.
If height an issue there will be issues up and down Hurrah Pass on the way here. I’m about 17 miles from Moab and it takes most about an hour.

What an incredible place! The area is breathtakingly beautiful. It is so quiet and dark at night, it is almost otherworldly. The history is fascinating and there is a reverence toward the property and land. 10/10, would definitely recommend!

Our stay at the female hogan was a highlight of our trip. It was not glamorous, but it and the area around it are glorious, and that’s not a bad trade off. Tom is a great host. He provided detailed, accurate instructions for the drive in, and what a drive it is! (The question that follows in VRBO’s review is unfair - the location is not convenient, which makes it special!) He led us back to the hogan and showed us around and was a lot of fun to talk with - great stories! The location is beautiful with lots of land to explore and exquisite views. Would love to be able to go back again!

Host should ONLY book those with4 wheel drive and high clearance. He knew my truck model and allowed me to take dangerous drive. Got stuck 3 times, hit bottom of frame 10 times, and almost drove off cliff. Both Base Camp and Vrbo are risking law suits by renting this dangerous cabin.Doorway was only 5’ tall, with NO warning signs. Hit my head and cut it on opening.Host did NOT mention that we had only an outside bathroom or that it was SHARED with other cabins in the listing. This is a scam! Although it listed the shower as outdoors, it did NOT say shared with other cabins. Lies to cover deficiencies should not be tolerated.

Guest is making things up. Doesn't say that most of my guests over the weekend were in SUV's but he had trouble making it in a truck because it was loaded down with so much stuff. I put all their stuff in my truck when they checked out and then they didn't have any trouble making the drive as they followed me with an empty load. Took their stuff almost all the way to town. Your welcome. The listing says in capital letters SHARED BATHROOM and there is a picture of it standing by itself. The door way is a Navajo hogan doorway as is tradition. If they can't see that the doorway is short how they going to see a sign above it? I send out the same email telling everybody about the road for 20 years, 10 on VRBO. Same directions to get here to everyone. They booked last year, they had plenty of time to read the listing and reviews. If it's a scam how come thousands of guests haven't mentioned it in the last 20 year? Lies by unprepared guests who overloaded their vehicle for a dirt road should not be tolerated.

An absolute stunning and beautiful area. We stayed for two nights and added a third it was so amazing. The property has animals, deer etc. We stayed in the Female Hogan, and it was great. It was secluded and had plenty of bedding for the four of us. The shower is just a few steps away as was the restroom which is flushable. The road to get there does require skill to drive and a 4WD is recommended. But any stock 4WD is fine. Do not attempt in the rain or snow. That could be dangerous. It will take 1:15 minutes to go 16 miles which again is a slow drive. You'll see many Polaris type drivers along the way. Be careful ad you can enjoy this amazing, beautiful place. Thanks Tom!

I cannot even begin to tell you about this piece of heaven! It is a secluded beauty. The only people we saw for days were Tom and Theresa. They were gracious hosts. We had the time of our lives. An experience we will never forget. We hope to return soon!

À propos de l’hôte

Hôte : Tom Higginson

Image de profil de l’hôte
Just a nice guy who knows who he is and where he's suppose to be.

Voici pourquoi l’hôte a choisi cet hébergement

I was president and founder for 25 years of a large indoor soccer company. The managers worked really hard. We all did. I wanted to find a place to get away, where we could escape from the grind. I wanted something in the boonies. Driving to our Boise facility I saw people walk out of their homes, get in their canoes, and get in the Snake River. I need a river. Driving through West Texas coming back from our Houston and Austin facilities I saw folks walk out of their homes and get on their dirt bikes and on their atvs and take off down dirt trails. I need dirt trails.

Sometimes I would find a property that had some things, but not all things. Sometimes I’d find something new and the hunt would then grow more difficult with more requirements. Then, years later I hit the wall. I was done with 100 hour weeks and I needed an escape. I escalated my hunt for a property in the boonies. I started focusing on the four corners area central to most of our locations.

After looking at 50 or so properties one day my Moab real estate agent told me about a property on the other side of Hurrah Pass. I tried to get out here to view it in the BMW but in those days the road was rough and I tore the BMW all up.

Turns out Base Camp has everything and so much more. I bought this place twenty years ago without knowing about the Wind Caves, Chicken Corner, Anti-Cline, Amasa Back, pottery sherds, arrowhead flakes, ancient dwellings, rock art, the critters of all kinds, dino tracks, fossils, all types of geology, the night sky, the quiet, the unlimited hikes and on and on. There has never been a day I haven’t appreciated what surrounds me. There never will be.

Voici ce qui rend cet hébergement unique

Things to know:

You should bring your own food and anything you’d like to drink besides water. Pretty much everything else is here. It’s 17 miles from Moab and it will take most a little over an hour. I will send you directions when we get a little closer to check in.

Things are not static. They don’t stay the same all the time. The road changes, a rock falls down, there is a rain storm, anything can change the road. It may be fine in the morning and deteriorate in the afternoon, for multiple reasons. I mention the beach, but sometimes I don’t have one during snow melt and slightly after and the locations of the beach could change. In June and early July generally we have mosquitoes but hardly got any this year depending on the high water mark. We have a Milky Way most nights but in winter it’s more difficult to see than in mid summer. I have side by sides for guests to use but sometimes they break and go in the shop at the same time so I might not have one while you are here. It's rare. I feed critters at night on the front porch of the lodge. Some nights some critters don’t come or they take a long time to come. I have no control over who shows up when. Kobae usually hangs out on the porch in March, April, May, and early June. Once it gets hot he retreats in his hole and I generally only see him once a day when he comes out to eat until end of August and then he’ll want to go hiking every day, for miles. He’s not here from mid November thru late February when he goes to San Diego for the winter.
