Wonderful, character property in the old town of Arles, excellent host, great communication and recommendations. Fantastic kitchen for cooking your meals after visiting the Arles Saturday Market. The proximity to everything in Arles is spot on, 100 steps to the colosseum says it all. Would happily stay there again. Brad and Dana

Beautiful old house in fantastic location

We had a wonderful stay at the Secret Garden in Arles. The weather was very hot while we were there which was a challenge for us, as we’re from a cooler climate. But the house was beautiful and in a wonderful location right near the arena. Checking in and out was easy and we loved our holiday here.

Great location

We loved the location, which was walking distance to just about everything in Arles. Property managers were very responsive and friendly. The property is distinctive and charming, if a little quirky (which I like). We didn't really cook, so can't say much about the kitchen facilities.

Perfect stay at the Secret Garden during the opening week of Les Rencontres d’Arles. Rebecca’s house is absolutely charming, full of history and details and everything you may need. Lovely kitchen and bedrooms, and we enjoyed a lot the patio in the evenings! Stairs are a bit tricky (just because they’re old) but just be careful going up and down. Location is also perfect, in the middle of everything but in a quiet street. Communication with Rebecca and Veronique was really easy, thank you so much! Looking forward to stay there again!! :)

A lovely authentic house

This property is near the center of everything, the location can’t be beat. The secret garden is a private atrium and inspired me to paint it. The house is decorated so beautifully. It’s a very old house, so don’t expect pristine, but do expect good taste. The property manager was responsive to an issue I had. The bathroom is especially lovely.

The perfect location in Arles

We spent 5 lovely winter weeks in this fabulous house in Arles. In the heart of the old city but with absolutely no street noise. Gorgeous bedrooms, extremely comfortable beds, a courtyard for relaxing, and a well-stocked kitchen. Even a pile of board games tucked within the livingroom coffee table. Having a clothes dryer in addition to the washing machine in the basement is a real bonus. Much thanks to Rebecca for our wonderful stay!

Le Petit Jardin

We once again returned to Le Petit Jardin because it is the most charming home we have ever stayed in. The hosts are always friendly and available to greet us and help us get situated and feel welcome. The location could not be better, as the Arena is a stones throw away from the front door. The amenities are everything one needs for a comfortable stay. The historic qualities of this home and the area cannot be matched with any other place we have been. We are always excited about returning to Arles and Le Petit Jardin.

Interesting and quirky

Truly great location, quiet. Beautiful internal courtyard. Stairs tricky (but it’s old so that’s to be expected. Would be great if Back area had a toilet as well as the shower but again, it’s old. Great kitchen at front and lounge area at the back. I run annual art workshops in Arles in May so the owner allowed 2 large bags of equipment to be stored downstairs so we could use it for the 2025 workshop. Much appreciated.

We enjoyed staying at this historic old house, however we did have a couple of issues. Firstly, the cold water tap in the bathroom sink was not functioning for the whole time we were there, despite the owner being aware of this issue before we arrived. This led us having to use the bath for cold water which in itself led to a mishap which affected the rest of our holiday. We subsequently found out that the cold water issue was resolved shortly after we vacated the property and we feel disappointed that it was not fixed whilst we were there. The second issue relates to the temperature of the bedroom at night. We were in Arles during a heatwave which made the bedroom uncomfortably hot. We did have a fan but this was not adequate. We appreciate it would not be easy to tastefully install air conditioning into a property of this type.On the positive side it was a good location and quiet.

Thank you for your review. We are pleased you enjoyed the location, quietness and historic character of Le Jardin Secret, but we are sorry that aspects of your stay were disappointing. To clarify the maintenance issue, the plumber attended on the day of your arrival, 18 June, to assess the bathroom basin tap. The repair required a part, and your stay ran across the weekend, so the work was completed once the part became available. As we did not receive any message through the WhatsApp group indicating that the tap was causing you difficulty, we treated it as routine maintenance rather than an urgent call-out. However, with hindsight, we should have checked in with you directly, and we accept that our communication should have been better. We were also very sorry to learn after your stay that you had fallen in the bathroom. Le Jardin Secret is an old Arles house with internal steps and level changes, which are part of its historic character, but we are reviewing whether the level change beside the bath can be made more visible for future guests. Regarding the bedroom temperature, Arles was experiencing very high temperatures during your visit. The property is not advertised as air-conditioned and fans are provided, but we appreciate your feedback and are considering what further cooling options may be practical in a house of this age and type. Thank you again for staying with us and for raising these points directly.

Atmospheric cottage within a stone's throw of the coliseum

We had a wonderful stay at this very quirky cottage and loved being right in the heart of Roman Arles. Our only problem was the lack of hot water on arrival but once we managed to get the hot water working (thank you Rebecca/Véronique for prompt reply) the showers were hot and powerful. We enjoyed the Saturday market, the Van Gogh Starry Night exhibition, tracing Roman aqueducts and visits to the Pont du Gard, the Camargue and Aix. Our son and daughter-in-law impressively hired bikes to cycle up Mont Ventoux, a stage on the Tour de Feance.

Life in Arles

We had no idea what it would be like to live in Arles or what the Secret Garden would be like. WE LOVED IT! It is very old and quite quirky. The kitchen was delightful as I live to cook. We realized that some of our home was very old and other parts just old. We could walk a few steps and view the arena that was built in 90 AD! We found our favorite gelato and coffee places. We would recommend this lovely place and that you would stay at least two weeks…we were here a month!

Eclectic home in the heart of old Arles

A unique and special place to stay. Lovingly restored old home on a narrow street 50m from the Roman amphitheater. Many restaurants close by and no more than 15 minutes walk from all the important sites. Rebecca was an excellent host and a delight to work with. You should be aware that this is a2 floor flat requiring some dexterity in getting up and down the steps to the bedroom. I qualify the steps comment by saying that my wife and I are in our 80s and managed well. The upstairs bathroom has a shower and separate tub. A delightful spot,, highly recommended!

Charming but ancient

I stayed here for 30 days. I’m sure most people spend two or three days. I got to see what 200 year-old walls do in real time.I personally loved this house. It’s location, it’s charm, It’s excellent kitchen and most of all its quirkiness made it the perfect place for me to stay for my extended holiday. But if you are older and have troubles going upstairs, you’re not going to like the secret garden. I can only imagine the maintenance and upkeep this home needs on a regular basis. But for my purposes, it was perfect and the bull fights made this a Hemingway moment. One last thing. The property owner and manager were extremely helpful.

A magical month in the Secret Garden

We had a dream-come-true, one-month stay in Arles at this charming stone house in old Arles near the ancient Roman ruins. All details like paintings and rugs were carefully selected to create a warm, inviting home. The kitchen had all the necessary appliances, pots and pans as well as beautiful dishes. Shopping was fun and convenient. We love going to the farmers market every Saturday and Wednesday. We also enjoyed going out to the wonderful outdoor cafes all around Arles…all within walking distance from our home. Even the Arles train station was a short walk away. All of Provence was easily accessible from our home base. The autumn weather was very hot during the day with cool mornings. Rebecca and Veronique were very responsive with any questions. I can’t say thank you enough for giving us the happy memories of Provence.

Step back in time, with plenty of amenities!

Staying at Le Jardin Secret is like living in a Provencal dream full of charm, history, antiques, books, and personal touches. Ideally situated in Arles’ old town, near the train station and around the corner from the amphitheater and many restaurants, the property is two structures connected by a sweet enclosed patio full of plants and a small table and chairs. The main building houses a large entry hall, half bath, kitchen and solarium, with the upstairs composed of a domed bedroom and large full bath. Across the patio is a family room with an upstairs bedroom, sink and shower (it’s a trek to get to the half bath in the other building). Granted, the stairs are steep and dipped due to years of use; just go slowly and hold on to the handrail. Everything was clean and beautifully appointed, and the host communicated well and even left champagne and fresh milk for us. Granted, there are a few quirks in any historic house, but Le Jardin Secret is so worth it! This is a one-of-a-kind property in which we felt honored to stay!

Great location

This house is in a perfect location in Arles, near the arena and easy walking distance to virtually all the sights of this wonderful city. The neighborhood is charming and remarkably quiet. The rental process was simple an efficient. We had a variety of maintenance issues while we were there, that I assume will be remedied. We would also like to clarify the physical description of the property. It is actually two houses joined by an enclosed, but open, courtyard. The front house has wc and kitchen downstairs and bedroom and full bathroom upstairs. The back house has the living room and a loft bedroom with shower and sink - it's toilet is down a very steep staircase, basically a ladder, across the courtyard to the front house. We found both sets of stairs precarious- and cannot imagine anyone with even slightly limited mobility being safe. Because of these issues, we would not rent this property again.
VrboOwner a répondu le 4 avr. 2020
Dear Helen, thank you for writing a review and for your patience with the issues that the heavy rain caused. i'm glad to say these have now been rectified. Thank you for drawing attention to the mobility issues for any future renter. The house, as you say is composed of parts - actually three parts not two. The first and oldest part is the stone kitchen and stone bedroom above it. It has been suggested that this may have been part of a roman monastery and you will have noted the arched stone ceilings. what you would not realise is that under the kitchen is a vaulted room sized cistern (for water storage). Interestingly the roman aqueduct enters the town at this point and runs past the house somewhere under ground. i have always wanted to be lowered into the cistern with a good torch and see what i could learn about it! The second part of the house makes the second side of the courtyard. You are right this would have been a separate house once. This is wooden in construction and younger - just hundreds of years old. this is the living room with loft bedroom with attached shower and sink room. A yes - a steep wooden stair. The third side of the courtyard is a large stone wall that makes up the neighbours external wall. The fourth side of the courtyard would have once been an alley to the two houses. This has now been infilled to make a third 'house'. The entrance from the street leads to a high ceiling hallway with toilet, stairs to the upstairs and stairs down to the basement. Because it is infilled the internal walls are the external walls to the neighbours and there is a stone archway similar to those you will see in the alleys around town. A small conservatory then forms the fourth side of the courtyard. Upstairs is the study, main bathroom and small terrace over looking the courtyard.... the stone stairs are indeed steep and worn with time. This part of the house has a basement (again with steep stone stairs). this basement had become infilled when we purchased the house and we excavated it out to its original depth and renovated it to form a utility room. Interestingly when digging it out we found what appears to be a damaged German helmet which we have placed in a niche in the wall for all to see. it must have an interesting story! For us the house has much to tell and we value its history and respect that it is part of a UNESCO world heritage site. We have tried to leave the house as a record of its fascinating history.

The Camargue captured our hearts on our first visit in 1999. Its wildlife, landscapes and living traditions, alongside the extraordinary history of Arles, kept drawing us back. We began looking for a small house and found Le Jardin Secret in 2003.

Since then, it has become a treasured family home. We now live in Australia but return to Arles for three or four months each year. Our time here is spent exploring the Camargue, visiting exhibitions, enjoying the markets and gradually learning more about the city—and the history hidden within our own walls.

Over the years, we have carefully renovated the house, revealing its old stonework and making it comfortable throughout the seasons. That work continues today, with improvements to the courtyard and interiors, including handmade marble mosaics inspired by the Roman heritage of Arles. We are also researching how the different parts of this intriguing house came together.

Le Jardin Secret is our European home, furnished and equipped for everyday living and long stays. We love returning to its quiet courtyard after a day out, cooking with produce from the market and having time simply to settle into life in Arles.

When we are away, we enjoy sharing it with guests who appreciate its history and individual character. We hope you will feel at home here and discover something of the pleasure that Arles and the Camargue have brought to our family for more than twenty-five years.

Rebecca and David

Voici pourquoi l’hôte a choisi cet hébergement

We chose this neighbourhood because it brings together so much of what we love about Arles. The Roman amphitheatre is close by, yet behind our front door we have the privacy of a small courtyard. From here, we can explore the old town on foot, wandering through its narrow streets to cafés, restaurants, independent shops and the banks of the Rhône.

History is part of everyday life here. The amphitheatre, Roman theatre and the squares around Saint-Trophime sit within a living town, where people shop, meet friends and gather for celebrations. Saturday mornings bring the great Provençal market—a favourite opportunity to buy seasonal produce and bring something home to cook.

Arles also has a remarkable artistic life. The Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arles connects the painter’s legacy with contemporary art, while LUMA offers exhibitions, striking architecture and landscaped gardens. Photography has a special place in the city, through the National School of Photography and the Rencontres d’Arles festival. Exhibitions, music, ferias and local traditions give each season its own atmosphere.

Beyond the town, three contrasting landscapes keep drawing us out to explore: the Camargue, with its wetlands, flamingos, horses and wide horizons; the open, stony plains of the Crau; and the limestone hills, olive groves and villages of the Alpilles. For anyone interested in wildlife, walking, cycling or simply discovering the region, Arles is a wonderful base.

That combination of history, art, everyday town life and nearby countryside is why we chose Le Jardin Secret—and why, after more than twenty years, we still find something new each time we return.

Voici ce qui rend cet hébergement unique

Le Jardin Secret is unique starting with the discovery behind its modest wooden front door: three distinctive historic buildings gathered around a private courtyard, forming one unusually characterful home.

The kitchen and principal bedroom have remarkable stone-vaulted ceilings, with substantial arches and finely shaped stone supports. Elsewhere, heavy timber beams, rubble-stone walls and an old fireplace create a different atmosphere. The changing materials and levels reveal a house shaped over successive historic periods, whose full story we are still uncovering.

The courtyard is the heart of it all, connecting the different parts of the house and provides a private outdoor space in the middle of the old town—a place for breakfast or a drink after exploring Arles. Our current renovation is adding travertine flooring and two handmade marble mosaics in a traditional Roman style, bringing another chapter to the house’s story.

There are quieter corners too: a small conservatory, a bureau and a veranda between the principal bedroom and bathroom. Beneath the house survive a vaulted stone cellar and a separate underground water cistern, intriguing reminders of its earlier life; the cistern is not accessible to guests.

We have owned Le Jardin Secret since 2003 and spend three or four months here each year. It is equipped for the way we live, with a generous kitchen, practical laundry facilities and fibre broadband, making it particularly suited to guests who want time to settle into Arles.

Outside, the amphitheatre and historic streets are close at hand. Inside, the courtyard gives the home a sense of retreat. That combination—distinctive architecture, private outdoor space and everyday comfort in the historic centre—is what we treasure most.

Its steep stairs and changes of level are part of that individuality, so it is best enjoyed by guests who are comfortable with the physical demands of an old house. Only the principal bedroom suite is available to guests.
