Unique location in a beautiful little town.
The Mansion is a unique location in a beautiful little town - located walking distance to anything including the Niagara River. Lots of room and character - much more memorable than staying at a hotel. Will be a pleasant memory for years to come.

Elegant ,historical getaway
This estate sits up on a hill in downtown Lewiston, so you're isolated from the hustle-bustle of the town. We were there during a full-blown arts festival but we never heard a thing. Very tranquil and loads of space both inside and outside.

Great location ...beautiful home
We had a family of 10 with 2 children. Perfect location as within walking distance to numerous shops, restaurants and close drive to Niagara Falls. Diane was a gem. She kept in constance contact to insure our stay was perfect. The Mansion layout is perfect for large families. Great livingroom areas to either join or have some quiet time to yourself. Highly recommended.

An amazing place to stay!
The historical ambiance of the Mansion made this one of my most incredible VRBO experiences. Eight of us came to Lewiston to play in a golf tournament and the property was perfect for us. We had lots of room to spread out, plenty of bedrooms, had a big kitchen to cook our meals in and comfy chairs to sit outside at night and rest from our day. The gardens were so pretty and it was nice to sit under the canopy of trees.
The communication from the host was spot on, she answered all my queries and even called and texted to make sure we were okay. The message that she sent us with the historical information about the house made our stay that much more special. Thanks so much for sending us helpful information about the area and things to do!

When we arrived at approximately 2pm there was no heat with temps outside in the 20s. We called and finally at 10:30 pm someone showed up. Apparantly the pilot light was out on one of the three furnances. The third furnance didn't work therefor two of the back bedrooms and bathrooms had no heat. Two space heaters were dropped of and that blew a fuse. They finally fixed the fuse still no hear there were many excuses we never got heat. The house was not very clean and the shower in one of the freezing rooms leaked down to the kitchen. We also had snow 4-5 inches and the walks were never shoveled. Very disappointed in the owners. Very poor management. Would not recommend stay in the winter.

Occasionally a guest is simply incapable of being please with any experience, as was this particular guest. This review wildly exaggerated the inconvenience. Here are accurate details so that the reader of this review may judge for themselves.
There are three separate heating units. These multiple systems ensures that there is heat, at all times, throughout the rooms regardless of exterior temperature. No single point of failure with one unit will affect the other two from operating as intended and compensate interior temperature. This heating system is in place as this is an historic property with many original features which require appropriate climate control. The first heat source is an air unit which heats the entirety of the first floor. The second unit is a separate radiant unit which heats each bedroom and hallway on the second floor main house and is powered by a commercial grade broiler. The third unit maintains the heat in the north wing which includes two bedrooms and two bathrooms as well as the Carriage. This configuration was designed in early 2003 to ensure the comfort of family and guests.
In this particular instance, the pilot light on the boiler for the second floor was blown out by unusual high winds that morning. This problem was not discovered until the guest arrived at 2 pm(an early check in we offered without additional charge). Upon being contacted, our caretaker arrived within two hours having purchased two space heaters while we did trouble shooting. The only rooms affected registering 60 degree heat are the second floor bedrooms which did not result in any guest being immediately affected as it was still afternoon. We did have to adjust the space heaters to balance the power intake. The actual heat for the north wing was addressed within 45 minute once caretaker arrived and did some trouble shooting. Heat was even and comfortable throughout the house within 3 hours. However, the caretaker remained onsite through 10 pm to look at the entire heating system and ensure that the heat would remain consistent and working.
The guests left for a planned outside dinner engagement early in the evening and was unaware that the problem was resolved. We do appreciate that this was an unusual situation where there was a several hour problem with a second floor heating problem in the middle of the day. This situation was, however, addressed promptly and appropriately for the guest. We have additionally installed remote thermostat controls to monitor heat in future.
As far as cleanliness, this is a complaint without substance and our team is experienced ad thorough. The “dust” was actually “salt” tracked in by these guest from the outside as they failed to remove their outside foot ware tracking it in on 200 year old floors. The terrace had been freshly salted and shoveled that morning to ensure that no snow or ice accumulated for guest safety and comfort. We have a second caretaker that ensures walkways and driveways are always kept clear for guests.
The same caretaker immediately washed the entire kitchen floor with soap and water at that time. Finally, regarding the water leaking from second floor shower. This was actually due to the guest failing to place the shower curtain inside the tub allowing water to accumulate outside the tub on the floor causing the leak. The guest information clearly states that all shower curtains should be “placed in the tub during shower” to ensure that water does not leak out onto the floors. (there are also reminders in the bathroom for the guest information and convenience). Clearly the guest did not follow the request which allowed water to accumulate on the floor.
This particular guest was clearly not an appropriate fit. The Mansion prides itself on providing a wonderful, comfortable and unique experience for our guests. We close by offering a small portion of a five star review (left on another site) left by a family who arrived just a few days later and stayed an entire week. This extended family from much warmer climate could not have bee more pleased with their experience.
“This is an amazing historical home in a quaint town. Everything was close by - walking distance yet the home is very private and peaceful. We had a wonderful time and would book this again. The host is extremely responsive and communication was easy and very timely.”

Not Worth for the Money
Though this seams to be a 200 Year old property and big space, The Maintenance was very poor.
Bad odor in the toilet
Blankets are not washed
Wooden floors are giving sound like its going to fall
There was hole in the second floor bathroom, where if water is leaked, it was wetting the kitchen:(. So you cannot use the bathroom above the Kitchen when you are cooking
Please try for some other option for better price

This historic home consistently receives highly complimentary reviews. We anticipated this negative review due to the associated issues with this guest regarding appropriate property rules. This response addresses each of the comments. . The matelassé coverlets on each bed were, in fact , newly replaced prior to this guest’s arrival. Linens must be replaced regularly as needed. Occasionally something may be missed but we do our very best to maintain the high standards for our luxury linens. Guests frequently ask us for the brands as the quality and the guest experience is excellent. Could we miss something? Of course, but we try to be as attentive as possible. Next the reference to the odor in the toilets. This has never been an issue in all of our years as a VRBO host. Our cleaning protocol requires that each commode is cleaned twice, first with ammonia and cleansers and then completely sanitized with alcohol. As to a bathroom leak, (which was in fact a slow drip), that was due entirely to the guest using the shower improperly despite clear instructions and information. Pretty straight forward… Keep the shower curtain inside the tub and do not flood the floor with water. Any home, regardless of age, might have water leak through under those conditions. The property is a very historic 208 year old structure and an important part of American history. It is constantly cared for and forever under maintenance… it’s an ongoing effort. I have seldom had occasion to apologize for floors making sounds when walked upon. The floors, made of ancient pine and chestnut, has stood the test of two centuries. Some of the floors are wide blank over 24 inches wide and sourced from nearby ancient forests. Solid as a rock as our the original hand hued beams. I think we can all agree that everyone over a hundred “creeks” a bit! (I know I do!).While the infrastructure including heating, electric and kitchens have all been thoroughly updated within the last 10 years, we have worked hard to maintain the integrity of the home. The gourmet kitchen features a Viking/Uline stove and all modern amenities. Most guest find the blend of modern convenience with all the original elements as part of the home’s historic charm and unique experience. It is rare that such a gem of Greek Revival architecture has its original interior moldings, wood floors, mantels, and floor to ceiling windows and glass as well as original “flying staircase” and floor to ceiling. The beautiful dining room murals are a modern adaptation of period design and a highlight featured several times on national television. This home has stood for over 206 years and has welcomed historic figures such as John Jacob Astor, the Marquis de La Fayette, as well as US Presidents. This unique property speaks to the discerning traveler and most all of our guests find it a wonderful and memorable experience.

We had a wonderful time in Lewiston and enjoyed the Barton house!
The property was very clean and easy to find. The location is fantastic easy walking distance to the water or downtown, in addition to a playground for the kids directly on the other side of the property fence! The house offered enough space for our family, my parents as well as my brother and his family. There was only one problem, we wanted to use the piano. My husband plays and we were excited to see it in the pictures, however it was locked and unaccessible. We were able to entertain ourselves regardless but it was one of the reasons I booked the house. All in all, it turned out to be a perfect weekend. Sunshine each day and a trip to the falls and then Lewiston's Art Festival! Wonderful quiet town with plenty of dining and entertainment. I would recommend to anyone.

WE appreciated John taking the time to write a review. Just a few notes on the comments. A concern regarding keys was expressed. Per new check in protocols, there are electronic key pads for guest use and the instructions with individual codes are provided for each guest within the welcome email or their convenience. Regarding the painting, we have been painting the house but due to weather, we have had some delays. The 206 year home has been completely repainted at this time.

Leaves a lot to be desired
1. House address is not clearly marked, we had to look in the mailbox to be sure we were at the right place
2. There wasn't a key or code left per the check in instructions sent by email to us
3 no contact information for property owner or manager....tenants next door gave us the contact number they had after they entered their room. No answer and voicemail was not set up for the number they gave us
4 after 3 attempts and 40+ minutes Vrbo finally gave us the code to enter the house
Very stressful as we were 300 miles from home and it was very cold
5 The exterior of the house looked dirty and weathered, the inside was ok but definitely not Clean. The stove either hadn't been cleaned after last tenants or it is horribly stained to look filthy
7 The website stated there would be a charge for any damage we may do, there was so much damage throughout the house paint on the walls nicks in the woodwork, locks that didn't work and lights that flickered, cracked windows that were taped, broken bar chair, roof tarped off, spiral staircase rail was rickety and unsafe. it was really a disappointment we paid A LOT of money we sure expected better 👎👎👎
The website boasted of 3 fireplaces which is true however none were usable.
Signed
Not happy tenants

Beautiful Historic Home!
We had the most wonderful time staying at this historic 1800s home which has been beautifully renovated. The pictures on the website didn’t do it justice; inside was a lovely mix of original features and modern convenience. After being stuck in our home for months due to the COVID crisis, we were looking for a change of scenery and some space to spread out in, and this home didn’t disappoint. The patio is large and has a wonderful fire pit to sit at in the evenings. We love history, and this home has details pertaining to its role in the War of 1812. It is within walking distance to many restaurants. We loved the 200 year old fireplace, the portraits throughout the house, the wood plank floors, and the old servants bells. Whoever does the cleaning for this house before our arrival did an impeccable job, especially for a house this size and age. One thing to be aware of - there is a separate carriage house that can be rented within the larger home. When we were in the kitchen, we could hear either other renters or property employees (not sure which) talking quite loudly. That aside, we loved our stay and would definitely love to return in the future!

À propos de l’hôte
Hôte : Diane
We fell in love with this extraordinary and gracious beauty. As lovely as the original Mansion is, the 2 acres placed in the center of one of the most beautiful and charming historic Village's in American history. The War of 1812 began in Lewiston with the Mansion's overlook being used to stage the canon attack across the Gorge to attack the British positions. The Marquis de Lafayette enjoyed the hospitality at the Mansion in 1823 .
