Hello Bridget, I appreciate you voicing your concerns about the utilities and I do appreciate you acknowledging that this was out of our control and not indicative of our house alone. The utility issues in PR have been a problem since the day we bought the house. This was not a neighborhood issue, this was a city wide issue with a busted water main that took several days to replace with new pipe. You just drew a bad lot. I’ve been there with my friends at a time when the power plant blew up (yes, blew up) The entire island was without power AND water for an entire week. Gas stations can’t pump without power so we now keep our cars full of gas at all times since we were clueless about this issue until we experienced it. Power outages can keep you from cooking or eating and since most houses in PR use electric cooking, no cooking can be done. We have purposely outfitted our home with things that may be slightly inconvenient, especially when on vacation, but at least our guests can bathe with the cistern water by using pumped water, they can drink water which we provide in addition to what is brought by guests, guests can flush toilets although bringing the water up to the two upstairs bathrooms is annoying, and guests can cook because we use propane for cooking. Cisterns in PR on the roof are for collecting rain water to use but the cisterns are rarely, if ever connected to the plumbing especially if the home has been renovated as the water from collection does contain salt and can really mess with the pipes that are 50 years old at best. Most homes no longer have whole house cisterns because we actually believe that PR will eventually finish this infrastructure overhaul. Even hotels and other guesthouses have to contend with this issue until PR can complete the overhaul. Please don’t give up on PR because it’s the US’s best kept secret but it is still in the dark ages with a few things. Hopefully you didn’t let it ruin your vacation. You were lovely guests despite the trying issues with the water. We did refund a portion of the revenue for the issues you dealt with. So please check your refund from VRBO.
