Family get-away

Family of six adults and three children spent an extended weekend at the Forestport Home. Found the house to be as advertised in the listing, clean and comfortable.

Fun Family Gathering

This rental provided a great place to hold a family gathering. There were plenty of beds for everyone. The house was very clean. The kitchen was perfect for fixing meals and the dining area was large enough to accommodate seating for everyone. The location was just 15 minutes from Old Forge/Water Safari. We enjoyed having camp fires in the evenings.

Charming House with lots of room

Our family of 11 stayed here and found it to be very clean, comfortable and very spacious! The 3 porches gave nice additional space for the kids to play and adults to hang out! Full well equipt kitchen and comfortable beds. Looking forward to staying here again.

It was a very nice house and location. My company had a job to complete in the area, and this property met all the requirements needed. Thank you to the home owner for allowing us to stay in such a short notice.

6 grandchildren throughly enjoyed themselves as did the adults. Only downfall was not enough fans so first nights were rather warm

Lake access across a busy highway not a street

I will now always re-read reviews before checking in. But it would be helpful if the owners added to their check in information- bring your own toilet paper, paper towels, hand soap and dish soap. This property had fewer basic amenities than anywhere I have ever stayed. We had mercy on the next guests and left some TP. The lake access is not just across a street, it’s across a 2 lane highway with limited sight distance in both directions & traffic going 60mph. The M-T we were there the traffic was heavy- I was completely terrified to let our kids cross. We did not “access” the lake. The house is lovely and impeccably clean. We did have fun hiking the railroad tracks behind the house and there is a trailhead to a pond, across the railroad and at the 4 way go through the gate with the stop sign on the left to get to the pond.

From the Owner: "Each bathroom is stocked with a roll of toilet paper to start, along with a roll of paper towels in the kitchen. Any additional supplies beyond that are provided by the guest. While we currently don’t supply toiletries, starting next season, we’ll be offering shampoo, conditioner, body wash, a trial-size bar of soap, and hand soap for added convenience.For reference, the road where the house is located has a 40 mph speed limit."

We booked this pretty last minute after realizing the original house would not be big enough. I read some of the reviews, which were mixed and we took our chances. Had I read all, we would not have! Upon arrival, I was not impressed with the crazy over grown weeds and poorly cared for porch. Opening the front door led to an overwhelming musty smell (can still smell in my hair). The place was as pictured, but a whole lot dimmer. The stairs were extremely loud and an open hole. The beds were loud and all but 1-2, like a brick, pillows flat as can be. We had to buy our own dishwashing soap and sponges (no dishwasher) and luckily did come with paper towel and extra toilet paper bc all you got was what was left in the roll. We left some extras for next guests. Needless to say, unfortunately this is not a place we would recommend or come back to

The right vacation home is everything, and we’re sorry this one didn’t meet your expectations. We followed up with the homeowner after reading your review, and they wanted to share the following:- We have a landscaper who maintains the property weekly and recently trimmed the bushes, but we’ll follow up to ensure the porch and entry are always welcoming.- While we haven’t had past reports of a musty smell, we’ll have our cleaning team and maintenance check so the home feels fresh for every guest.- The house was built in 1920, so the creaking stairs are part of its character, but we’ll continue to monitor for safety and comfort.- Mattress and pillow comfort can be subjective, but we do refresh pillows and comforters regularly. The home is also always meant to be stocked with dish soap, sponges, a roll of paper towels, and one roll of toilet paper per bathroom to get guests started.We appreciate your feedback as it helps us continue improving, and we’re confident that future guests will enjoy excellent experiences here.

Over all it was a very nice place. It was cozy and the air conditioner in the living room was very nice. I don't know if this is the right place to put this or not, but only place I've seen for complaints so far. Just had a few complaints, 1. There was no slip resistance in the showers. 2. Mr. Cool remote holder on the wall, the screws were to small and the holder fell off the wall. 3. Freezer in the kitchen leaking water under the door. 4. The shower upstairs leaks water under the door. 5. There was a trash can on main porch next to BBQ grill that had trash in it. (We took care of it so we wouldn't get the blame.)

The photos in the listing are accurate but I would say look much better than in person. Positives:The home was clean and spacious. The beds were comfortable and there were plenty of towels. Check-in was easy with a lock box and property manager responded to issues. There were plenty of pots, pans, dishes, glasses and some spices in the kitchen. Negatives: As others have said, to get to the 3 bedrooms upstairs, you have to go through the office bedroom. One of the upstairs bedrooms is through the main upstairs bedroom. To get to the bathroom upstairs, you have to go through the main bedroom. There is one air conditioner in the main upstairs bedroom and one in the living room downstairs. They don't cool the bedrooms if you close the bedroom doors. Only one roll of toilet paper is provided in each bath and no toiletries - bring your own TP, paper towels, shampoo, conditioner, soap and hand soap.The porch furniture is not in good condition and the porches are not clean. The house is very close to Rt. 28 and very busy. Traffic is loud if windows are open. There is lake access but you have to cross Rt. 28 which can be difficult - there is no crosswalk and the speed limit is 55 MPH. There is no beach or anywhere to sit at the lake and the lawn was not mowed or cared for. I would not stay here again.

After reviewing your feedback with the homeowner, they’d like to share the following:- The home, built in 1920, has a unique layout that adds to its charm and helps bring families together.- A new split A/C unit with two heads cools the upstairs and main living area, and each bedroom includes a free-standing fan for added comfort.- Toiletries are not provided, as clearly stated in the listing.- I’ll follow up with my cleaner about the screened porch; since it’s exposed to the elements, I may consider updates—this is the first time it's been mentioned.Thank you for sharing your experience—it helps us continue to provide the 5-star stays we’re known for!

Overall this was a clean convenient place. Plenty of parking. The layout of bedrooms feels more appropriate for families becasue you have to walk through connected bedrooms both up and down stairs. The "office" bedroom has to be walked through for all three occupants of the bedrooms upstairs. We already knew bedroom #1 and #2 were connected. Since the evenings were cool enough for use of the funace we had a very strong fuel oil odor drifting up through return vents on the first floor all night. Bring extra TP and paper towels. There are no hooks or towel bars in either bathroom so a drying rack might be useful. The cool nights brought the mice inside each evening. They were very busy on the proch and in the kitchen. Glass and plastic containers for all your food will help. Expected but be aware! The living room is spacious and comfortable. Plenty of hot water for showers and baths. Beach access is lovely. The side and back porch were great for storing unused items and a protected area for morning coffee. Enjoy your stay!

Misleading photos, Disappointed in the Quality

Other than having enough beds the large living room to play in, we were very disappointed in the quality of the property for the amount we paid. No garbage pickup, you are supposed to take it with you. Previous renter didn’t take theirs's and when I reached the property contact they stated that they would come remove it. They never came. As a result, we ended up with a mouse in the living room. Key to the front door is hard to turn and the door sticks. Deadbolt doesn’t have secure place to latch into. No railing on the outdoor stairs. Upstairs bathroom doorknob didn’t have a latch and you could not close the door to the bathroom. No lock on the bathroom. Paint is bubbling and peeling off the walls and ceiling of that bathroom. Downstairs bathroom has tiles peeling off the wall and the door is very difficult to close. Lamps/TVs in locations where there aren’t outlets to plug them in. Stairs inside squeak horribly and there are gabs in the stairs you can see through. No handrail on the internal stairs. No screens in any of the windows. If you are not providing AC guests need to be able to open the windows. Not enough dishware for the number of people advertised and there are no wine glasses. Cobwebs on the kitchen ceiling fan. Moved the couch to get to an outlet and behind the couch had not been cleaned. Ran out of hot water while showering, hot water heater not big enough for the number of people advertised. Smell coming out of the basement, discovered an open sewer pipe.

Hi Stephanie, we followed up with the homeowner after reading your feedback, and they wanted to share the following: - The home was built in 1920, however, we’ve done numerous updates, and the home is well maintained. We take the accuracy of our listings seriously and can confirm the pre-stay email sent before arrival states to please take all trash with you when leaving since there is no local garbage pick up. We're sorry if this caught you off guard. - Considering the home is located in a natural wooded area, mice can be prevalent in the woods and occasionally enter if doors are left open. We have ongoing pest control that manages and protects the home from these issues. We also have yet to receive a complaint regarding the front door and we can confirm it works as it should. - As seen in the listing photos, there are two steps to the front porch, and we do not advertise a railing. Guests are encouraged to book a vacation home that best suits their needs. Also, the upstairs bathroom does not have a lock on the doorknob, however, it has a wall type of lock to securely lock the door for privacy. - Additionally, the maintenance team has also reported there are no issues with the paint or tile work. Also, every lamp, TV, or electronic device has a designated spot in the home to be plugged in, so previous renters may have moved stuff around. -The stairs do squeak slightly as the home was built in 1920. We have plans to install a handrail on the stairs shortly. We are also having new windows installed before next summer. Our kitchen is well stocked to accommodate 16 guests. We do understand being able to cook during your stay is important to most guests. - We have addressed your concerns regarding cleanliness with our local team to ensure that this issue does not recur for future travelers. We have never experienced problems with bad odors and I can assure you there is absolutely no open sewer pipe in the basement. - While we do regret our home was not up to your expectations, we are happy to share that no issues were reported by the guests who stayed the following weekend. We are accustomed to providing five-star experiences and have worked very hard to provide a clean and comfortable place for guests to enjoy. We will continue to do all we can to provide the best possible stay for our guests!
