The standard of the house is so excellent from the wood paneling in the bathrooms to around the windows. Not just that, but everything looks freshly painted/taken care of, this does not look like a vacation property and certainly not one that has been for years. It feels like a home. It's on well/septic but never had any 'rotten eggs' smell from the well that we've had on other vacation properties.
We are a couple and it was a perfect size for us, but certainly was big enough for another 2 people. What the pictures doesn't show you is the family room is directly off the dining room/kitchen area. It's very open plan, you can talk to someone in the kitchen easily from sitting in the family room. We stayed there for 2 months in the winter, we did miss a fireplace and although Cape Charles is reduced in the winter (bakeries all close during the week, only open at weekends) we did have nice sunny days to walk around the property.
By the time you drive up the driveway your stresses have melted away, so when you see the view of the water and hear how quiet it is* you really are on vacation. Coming from Virginia Beach which seemed to always have the military jet noise and deafening loud, this is serene. It did have the days they were flying over but it was very infrequent and a lot higher up (which is quieter).
quirky things -
The bed is VERY high up, I'm 5ft 8" and I needed the provided stool to climb onto the bed, so if you have mobility problems you might want to know this but gives a great view. It is a really comfortable bed as well.
You need to take your trash out to the local (10 mins away) garbage station, I think this place along with other homes in area have to do this as it's so rural. What I didn't know was that this is free! Coming from another state which charges you $20 just to go in, we were saving trash up just to go every week and we didn't need to.
Although rural it is only 15 mins from downtown Cape Charles and the local grocery store. Note that this store (food lion) does not have self checkout and lines can be very long, we tried instacart but didn't have anyone to deliver to the house.
RE food I recommend Quail cove farms, esp their frozen meat pies.
Owners live next door, and as we are the left alone type, they checked in every few days and were very quick with any responses/requests, lovely people. We appreciated the eggs & butter for us when we arrived to save us going out (they also left wine & made a lovely pie) Great stay.
