We are so disappointed that Deborah was disappointed with her experience at the Birdhouse Guesthouse during her time with us in February of 2023. I went back to check reviews from recent guests to see if any guests had a similar experience in the past few months. We get lots of visitors to The Birdhouse—we have 10 recent guest reviews with 9 giving us 5 stars and one giving us 4 stars. Deborah gave us 2 stars! So clearly we were not a good fit for her. The Birdhouse sleeps up to 10 people and has 4 bedrooms and 7 beds. Deborah rented for herself and her husband and had anticipated that other family would join them. They came to Lafayette for a three week winter holiday and they were with us during the time of unusually cold and freezing weather. Our tropical landscaping was at its low ebb and no plants were flowering. That winter weather doesn’t last long—-but Deborah didn’t get to see the Azaleas bloom at the end of the month. She mentioned that the home was clean and the host attentive. Indeed, we tend to our guests and check to see to their needs. she expressed concern that several outlets were not secured in the wall and that she did not see the smoke detector. I have given that info to our maintenance team, so it will be tended to. Her more negative conclusions were that the neighborhood was rundown and inconvenient. I the last 10 reviews, all other guests have given 5 stars on the convenience of the neighborhood. The pictures are an accurate representation of the home and furnishings. Our guesthouse was not a good match for Deborah and her husband. They felt dark and lonely and alone. We encourage you to look closely at our photos and video and to read the last 10 reviews to determine if it is a match for your group. You can count on us to deliver a comfortable, cozy and clean family home for a larger group. We hope that you will have a wonderful experience in a typical Lafayette setting that is urban (not suburban) and convenient to lots of our favorite restaurants, attractions and events.

My family and I own 5 guesthouses in Lafayette and we have been hosting guests since 2015. We have over 350 guest reviews with another hosting company from guests with an average of 4.7 out of 5 stars. On three occasions we have had guests threaten us with a bad review if we did not meet their demands. Suzanne is one of those guests. She booked for one week and arrived on a Sunday night. Before she arrived I told her that we had a plumber working on a repair to our tankless hot water heater and that a part scheduled for arrival on Saturday did not arrive and that the repair was re-scheduled for mid-day Monday. She said that was acceptable. I went with the plumber on Monday and the repair was complete by 1PM. I sat with Suzanne's husband in the dining room while the plumber was there. I asked, as I always do on the first day of a guest's stay, if there was anything that we needed to tend to. He told me that they were really comfortable and that all was fine. In fact he had numerous compliments for the home----really pretty and clean, good choice of things to watch on Netflix, hulu and Roku channels, nice space for them to cook. If he had mentioned ants, I would have shown him the insect spray in the laundry room. If he had asked how to further cool the house, I would have gone to each of the five air conditioner units and the 6 ceiling fans to help maximize cooling. He asked for nothing. I gave him $70 cash to take Suzanne out for dinner, as a compensation for the inconvenience of the plumbing repair. Later that day, Suzanne texted me to ask how to cancel their reservation because she had found a long term rental. I responded that the cancellation terms were online in her reservation agreement. She texted me that if I did not give her a refund, she would give us a bad review. The rental agreement is binding on both the guest and host. Neither can cancel without a penalty. Neither host nor guest can "find a more attractive offer". Suzanne gave us 3 stars and made negative statements as she said she would if I did not give her a refund. My family is committed to the comfort and safety of our guests. We use clear contracts and cancellation policies as part of the rental agreement. We fulfilled our agreement in a professional manner. Her review did not mention the outstanding amenities we provide for a very reasonable price---or the lovely gift of a restaurant dinner. We are proud of our guest services.
