The Chestnut House

The perfect place for you and your family to rest, unplug, enjoy novice trout fishing, and stargaze under the clean country sky.

Welcome to the Chestnut House. This recently renovated riverfront home is a blend of historic charm and modern elegance. Originally built in 1926 as a log cabin made of real chestnut, it has since been used as a US Post office, country market, and later a house in 1936. The home is nestled between the Cardinal and Little Priest mountains in the Blue Ridge Range and the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest.

The main attraction of the Chestnut House is the outdoors. Just a step away from the back door is the Piney River. Enjoy the sounds of this rushing river from the beautiful sundeck furnished with Adirondak chairs, or the picnic tables, rock fire-pit, or hammock. This two-story cottage offers scenic river and mountain views, a wood stove, chef’s kitchen, and sleeping accommodations for up to six guests. Open the windows and enjoy the sounds of the rushing Piney River and nature throughout the house.

A fun fact about the home: Growing on the side of the home facing the river is a very old, almost extinct, American Chestnut Tree. This is why we call it the “Chestnut House”.

Lastly, don’t forget your fishing rods! Native brook trout and wild brown trout populate the river.

Great place to relax and get away. The babbling river was very peaceful. A lot of outdoor activities. The place has everything you need. And they welcomed us with a dozen fresh eggs and local ice cream! Our pup enjoyed as well.Definitely recommend.

It is a beautiful place,we have passed it for years going in and out of the George Washington National Forest,we always thought how nice it would be to stay there.We found out that it was a VRBO but we didn't know that it had been completely restored, the inside and outside are both somewhat rustic looking in a way but everything is very modern, the host was great to deal with and we have actually booked the place again for late October, check it out, you'll be glad that you did.

Beautiful house right on the river. We had an amazing time just sitting outside listening to the sound of the water rolling by. Inside, the house is impeccable with everything you need to spend some relaxing time away. Our dogs were quite happy as well and were lounging by the river and exploring the property all day long. Gorgeous home in a beautiful setting. We would love to discourage people from this property so that it remains a secret gem but that is too selfish. The home is clean and beautifully decorated by Maria. The property is amazing and so peaceful. Sitting by the river had us hooked. Maria and Randy are excellent hosts. We always have a wonderful experience here. The hosts are always amazing. The cottage is pristine and the kitchen is well stocked with basic needs and more. We love home cooked meals and like to bring our own supplies but it is always nice to have some backup options in case we forget something. We really appreciated the fresh eggs and ice cream for the kids! They provide towels, soap, and shampoo in the bathrooms as well as paper products and other hygiene items which is always convenient. The fire pit and deck near the river are the perfect relaxation spot and the large yard was great for the kids to run around and play. The barn is really nice and has a lot of outdoor activity items. It is also great for storing hiking and fishing gear and hanging equipment. This place gets better and better every year and we are never disappointed. It was a very private and relaxing getaway. We will definitely be returning as always. Thanks Maria and Randy!

We loved our stay along the Piney River. We booked this property for Liberty University's graduation weekend. We were concerned about the distance from the school but this house was worth the drive. It is a beautifully remodeled home with plenty of space to stretch out in the living room or sit around the kitchen table. Sitting on the deck right along the river was the perfect way to relax after a busy weekend schedule. The owners thought of all the amenities you might need and provided for a very clean and comfortable stay. The owners also were very understanding and responsive to any questions we had.

What a wonderfully appointed respite. If you’re looking to unwind, be with people you love, and get centered…this is the place. I hesitate to tell you how lovely & welcoming Maria & Randy are because this will become a popular place to be. All the nice little touches, you forgot your toothbrush, no problem, you forgot to bring a book to read, no problem, you forgot a game to play, like I said no problem. It’s all there, just bring yourselves and let the sound of The Piney River soothe your soul. Enjoy!

We felt welcomed from the moment we arrived! The property is incredibly peaceful and calming. I loved sitting at the picture window each morning and having coffee while looking out at the snow covered landscape and the flowing water of the river! The decor and color palette used throughout are perfection. After a day exploring outside we loved coming in to cook warm meals and settle down by the fire at night. Would definitely consider staying again!

The Piney River house far exceeded our expectations and was perfect in every way. The home itself is cozy, beautifully decorated and very functional. The property is amazing with a gentle slope to the river and a large yard for games. We had a wonderful time and hope to return soon. 10/10; highly recommend!

This was by far the best property I’ve stayed at so far! Communication was amazing and there is a binder that has all of the information you could need. Including points of interest nearby for food, entertainment, etc. Wonderful views and a nice getaway location to connect with nature and relax to the sound of the river water right in the back yard.

We purchased the home in 2022 after falling in love with its bones, history, and scenic Piney River views. It was built in 1926. Over the years it served many purposes but had since been abandoned and was in need of a lot of TLC. After one year of renovating, it ourselves, we are excited to invite guests to enjoy the beauty it offers.

The river you hear below is called the Piney River and flows for several miles....
Nestled at the base of the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest this home is a peaceful escape and the perfect place to take a break from the city.
