Apartment: Marc Antony
My wife and I stayed in the Marc Anthony apartment in Casa Spello for four weeks in January 2016. Although it was winter time, we were very comfortable in this cosy apartment. It is very well appointed and we had everything we needed for the sort of holiday we prefer - having a home base where we can prepare our own food, set out on day trips and return at the end of the day to a comfortable home. The owner, Gina, provided clear instructions and offered lots of suggestions for dining and sightseeing opportunities. With its two bedrooms, the apartment was big enough to be comfortable even when our son and daughter-in-law visited for a couple of days. There is only one bathroom, so for a longer stay with more than two guests, one of the other apartments in the building might be preferable. The thick stone walls kept us warm and we rarely used the central heating. Coming from a warm part of Australia, we are not accustomed to central heating, and only turned it on a few times to warm the place, then turned it off again. The beds are comfortable and there are plenty of blankets and duvets. Spello has many advantages compared to other towns we visited, as it is not only very charming and attractive, but it is also quite lively. Even in the middle of winter there were plenty of shops and restaurants etc open for business, and lots of movement in the streets and bars, particularly on the weekends. Many other places we visited were much quieter. The weather was kind and allowed us to go on lots of walks. Some were long walks to neighboring towns, but it was also possible to head out along any of the small roads outside the town and enjoy the beautiful countryside. As Spello is on the train line, it is possible to take trips to Rome, Perugia and further afield. Some days we stayed home and enjoyed relaxing in the apartment, strolling around the town and even enjoying lunch or aperitivo on the terrace. The apartment offers views across the valley. The garden would be lovely in the warmer seasons, I am sure. It is difficult to be far from anything in a small hill town, but Casa Spello is very centrally located, with restaurants, shops and bars just around the corner. It is also very quiet and peaceful, as it is situated on the edge of town, with no close neighbors below, and no through traffic. Strongly recommended!
