Vrbo reports early surge in snowbirds flocking to vacation homes

Austin, TEXAS – Dec. 8, 2021 – Vrbo® data indicates travelers swapping the winter cold for sunnier destinations are booking vacation homes earlier than usual.

Snowbirds have been planning their escape from the cold as early as August, and demand for Vrbo vacation homes in snowbird hotspots has increased over 20% compared to 2019 [1].

Popular destinations including Cape Coral, Florida; Maui, Hawaii and Tucson, Arizona have less than 20% of Vrbo vacation homes available to book in January and February next year, but snowbirds can find more homes available to book in locales like Pensacola, Florida and O’ahu, Hawaii [2].

This early booking pattern matches what Vrbo has seen during several major travel seasons this year, and this “early bird booking” behavior is one of the major travel trends Vrbo anticipates will continue into 2022.

“It is not uncommon for snowbirds to stay in their warm weather destination for a while and book longer stays at vacation homes,” said Alison Kwong, spokesperson for Vrbo. “Almost half of January and February stays on Vrbo are for seven nights or longer [3], and snowbird travel, typically associated with retirees, now also includes travelers of all ages who have more flexibility because of remote or hybrid work policies.”

Families should check for travel advisories and restrictions in their vacation destination and always follow health and safety guidance from health officials and local authorities. Visit this help article for more information.
