AUSTIN, Texas – Dec. 14, 2021 – Chalets claim the top spot as the trendiest vacation rental property type, according to the Vrbo® 2022 Trend Report. The annual report has crowned cabins and houseboats as trendy property types in previous years.
Demand for chalet-type vacation homes on Vrbo has increased by nearly 85% in the past year. Known for easy sloping roofs and wide overhanging eaves, chalets are often nestled in destinations ideal for outdoor getaways, including ski towns and lakefronts.

“Cabins, condos and beach houses are always great vacation rental choices, but for the first time, we’re seeing the charming chalet emerge as the fastest growing property type in demand,” said Alison Kwong, spokesperson for Vrbo. “The original definition of a chalet is a wooden home with a sloping roof and overhanging eaves, which is traditionally found in the Swiss Alps. Vrbo hosts have expanded that category to include lakeside cabins or cottages in the woods that have the same European-inspired style and design aesthetic.”
