Quaint cottage in the centre of Arundel
We had a lovely Christmas week in Spindrift. We had seen that this cottage had mixed reviews, but we had a great time and were not disappointed. Thank you to Chris and Sam for setting up a Christmas tree and lights, which made us feel very welcome. Spindrift is an old cottage (late 18th century?), fully modernised with some quirky original features including lots of stripped back original wood, floorboards, and panelling. The old floorboards are a bit wonky in places, but it’s part of the cottage’s charms. Typical of Arundel cottages it has a very steep staircase up to the bedrooms and bathroom. The stairs do need careful manoeuvring, especially when coming downstairs; so, they would be a challenge for children or adults who are unsteady on their feet. The cottage is cosy with good heating and plenty hot water on tap including in the recently refurbished bathroom which has a shower with plenty oomph. Reviewers have mentioned the high kitchen worktops and cabinets – they were clearly built for someone tall but were quite OK for us who are of middle height. The kitchen had all the essentials for cooking Christmas dinner. There are views from both sides of the cottage – to the river at the front (though currently a little obscured by work going on to shore up the riverbank) and to the Castle at the back of the cottage. Free parking on Mill Lane a few minutes’ walk away was easy. Small shops for essentials are all just a few minutes’ walk from the cottage. If you go to Arundel do check out the heated Lido which is open at certain times of the year, including Christmas and New Year, and is just five minutes’ walk from the cottage.
