Town: Though Conwy has been designated as a World Heritage Site due to its historical and architectural significance, the town's centre is a hive of activity. In addition to its many specialty stores, restaurants, and hotels, the area hosts a number of festivals and fairs celebrating the city's rich history as well as musical performances, art galleries, and historical sites. Conwy Castle, constructed for King Edward I between 1283 and 1287 according to a plan by Master James of St. George, is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of mediaeval military architecture. The narrow rocky ledge on which the castle rests likely influenced its peculiar, elongated shape, which features two barbicans, eight enormous towers, and a magnificent bow-shaped hall. Conwy is a great place to stay if you want to visit the nearby beautiful countryside, unspoiled sandy beaches, or the nearby majestic Snowdonia National Park.
