Come visit and see our gorgeous 2024 room renovations! Beds, furnishings, art, decor - everything is ALL NEW. The amazing ocean front view remains the same ;-)

Hale Kai Hawaii Suites offers four oceanfront rooms (booked individually) and a spectacular, panoramic view of the blue Pacific Ocean and Hilo Bay. We overlook the popular Honolii surfing beach in a peaceful location just 2 miles north of historic Hilo Town. Revel in the best views in Hilo while at our pool and oceanfront lanai!

The Moana Room is a large room with king bed, small table with chairs, desk, WiFi, SMART TV, private bathroom with shower, small fridge/freezer, microwave, coffee maker, hot water pot, toaster, dishes and utensils, ceiling and portable fan, no air conditioning and sliding door to lanai. Continental breakfast items are stocked daily and we invite all guests to swim in the pool or lounge on our oceanfront lanai.

A few NOTES: One parking spot is provided per room in this quiet residential neighborhood. All Guest Rooms are facing the ocean on the lower level of the property and there are over 30 steps down (pictured) to traverse to the rooms. Guests are responsible for carrying their luggage to their rooms. Bookings limited to 2 guests per room (age 13 years and over). Quiet hours are 9pm to 8am for the comfort of all of our guests, Mahalo!

While at Hale Kai (House on the Ocean) Hawaii, enjoy watching surfers, dolphins, and seasonal humpback whales during their annual migration to the Hawaiian Islands from the north Pacific. Views for days!

My husband and I love the location of this rental and have stayed here twice. We always enjoy the daily breakfasts with lots of fresh fruit and the relaxing sounds of the waves. The pool was lovely and secluded. Definitely will stay here again.

Rating Details: The property manager was very unhelpful. The vacation rental was very clean. I was happy with the location. I was somewhat dissatisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: No air conditioning which we knew, but room very muggy. Lacked privacy. We had to pull heavy drapes across our screen door for privacy therefore blocking any air flow. Room was dark. Asked for ice and we were told not part of the contract. Had to buy our own. Nice view. Difficult to drag luggage into room ... have to go down a set of stairs and then up. Parking available but very tight.

The only thing I would like to see is air conditioning. The ocean breeze is nice, but without cross ventilation, (a second window) the room can get stuffy.

Great space next to the ocean

We had a nice stay at this space. The only cons were the hot tub didn't work, and our door wouldn't lock from the outside with the key provided, but the space was secluded and we felt very safe despite. We would certainly stay in this beautiful space again. Mahalo!

Beautiful View

The weather in Hilo was very overcast most of the time we were there, which is something that obviously can't be controlled. The amazing part was that the view was still beautiful even with the drizzly weather. There were always surfers to watch from the pool area. We didn't use the pool or hottub. I did do yoga one morning by the pool. There was a beatiful sunrise the last morning we were there. The table and chairs outside our room were under a little overhang, so we could still sit outside and enjoy coffee or breakfast in the morning. Speaking of breakfast, my husband LOVED the muffins that were provided eahch day! I appreciated how environmentally friendly they were with even providing a little composting container for our food waste. There was a refrigerator with a freezer in our room and a larger refrigerator and freezer in the common room if needed. The room was very large, so we had plenty of space. The flowers along the stair walkway from the parking space to the room were lovely. There were whales spouting out in the bay each day. They were pretty far out, but it was still exciting to see! When I had questions, they got back to me right away and were very kind.

Location

Quiet road. A short drive into town. Able to watch surfers at Honoli'i Beach. Saw whales from the lanai. Continental breakfast was filling. The driveway is quite steep. If reserving Moana, you might want to back in.

Amazing location!

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: The guesthouse is located just 5-10 minutes north of Hilo, depending on traffic (morning rush into town will take longer). The views out of Hilo Bay are amazing. It is whale season and every morning we saw dozens of them out in the bay.Our room (Moana room) was clean but basic. We had a microwave, fridge, toaster, and coffee maker. Fruit and muffins provided.Not for people with mobility issues as there are steps down and back up to get in and out of the rooms. The driveway is also steep and it can be a challenge to get your vehicle out. The left turn onto the main road to Hilo can be tough as well during heavy traffic and at night with low visibiility.Overall, great place to stay during a visit to Hilo.

Great Room, Tricky Parking

I understand that the renovations are nearly done, but they’re still causing complications. When we arrived, the small parking lot was half filled with workers’ trucks, so we had to wait for them to leave. Admittedly, we arrived about half an hour early. We were supposed to have a particular space reserved, but even after the workers left, a truck was still in our space, so we had to park in a different one. We went out for dinner, but when we came back, a sedan was in our space, so we had to choose another. In practice, I guess, it’s first-come, first-served, or take what you can get. Also, the driveway is, as ever (this is our third stay at the property), quite steep, making it a bit of challenge to maneuver your way out, especially if you have to do so in reverse. Still, it’s a beautiful and delightful place, especially if you like to get up in the dark and watch the sun rise. It’s worth some inconvenience and anxiety in the parking lot.

Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: The location here is absolutely gorgeous! The property is set on a hill that overlooks the ocean, where whales frequent! We were able to see whales right from the patio area in front of our room! The property has no AC, which we anticipated, but the only way to get air in the room is by leaving the screen slider open, with no way to lock it, which made me a little uneasy. The room would get very warm during the day, but thankfully, it cooled off fairly quickly once said door was open. The room was super cute & we loved the decorations, but the mattress and pillows were *awful.* It felt like we were sleeping on cement it was so firm (and the pillows were the same). They also provided a tasty breakfast each morning, which we really enjoyed. There was so much to love about this open-air property! If they update the mattress & pillows, we would definitely return.

We enjoyed the breakfast left for us every morning of fruit, hard boiled eggs, yogurt and muffins. The views from our room were breathtaking! On New Year's Eve we could see fireworks going off all around the bay. During the day we were able to watch the surfers down below.The property managers were very helpful and friendly. I loved everything about this vacation rental and would highly recommend it.

Great view

Great view, clean room. I wish there was AC, but we enjoyed our stay. The girls next to us were a little annoying by playing their music and loud while in hot tub.

B&B at it's best

This is our first B&B and we were very impressed. Great fresh breakfast provided every morning. Beautiful surroundings and sunrise. Not too far from town and excursions. We highly recommend this place and our wonderful host who was always available when needed.

We enjoyed waking up to see dolphins swimming off shore. The one downside would be that the room would get a bit hot at night because there isn't A/C, and wasn't much of a breeze coming in from the window.

We know the way - to enjoy our stay

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: I apologize for the eye roll inducing Review Title...We had a fantastic stay at Hale Kai Suites. The Moana Room was lovely! The views were unbeatable! The pool was refreshing and the hot tub (and the view of Hilo from it) were luxury!! The in room breakfast was perfect, especially the Papaya on the 2nd day!! Honolii was "home away from home" through my childhood and it was wonderful to get to experience a stay on this road, with these views, one more time. My only issue was there were some problems with Hot Water. It would occasionally take a long time to warm up (15+ min) but this was not always.

One of the best vacations ever!

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Do not hesitate to stay at this lovely BNB. It was our first time in Hilo and the hospitality was perfect! Lovely breakfast in the morning on your own private patio over looking the ocean. The pool was perfect and hot tub even better. The grounds the BNB are on is like a tropical garden. I made so many snail and Gecko friends! You might even be lucky enough to see dolphins swimming in the bay. In my personal opinion it's the best BNB on the big island. Can't wait to stay again!

Quiet, beautiful, home base to explore the Hilo area

My wife and I spent three nights in the Moana Room as we explored the Hilo area and it was perfect for our needs. The room was spacious and clean and boasts an amazing view overlooking Hilo Bay. We made use of the pool and hot tub and loved listening to the crashing waves below while drifting off to sleep.

Nice ocean views

Great location right on the ocean cliffs and close to town. Easy check in process. Definitely was hot in the room during the day and early evening as there is no AC but luckily we were out most days doing things.

Reviewer Comments: Great location to downtown Hilo, beautiful view and landscaping, good variety of breakfast items, and spacious room. My boyfriend and I both thought the bed was extremely stiff and the pillows could use an upgrade. We originally wanted to reserve the Bamboo room but it was reserved for 1 of the nights of our stay. We would stay again for the price.
