Cozy cottage

We stayed for a weekend snowmobiling. Cottage is easy to get to from Durango and Purgatory. For the price, it’s a great value.

Gorgeous View/ Great Host

A Place at James Ranch was such a nice getaway. From the living room and dining table you get such a beautiful view of the ranch and mountains. It was very cozy and had such nice touches (especially the stove heater) with the cold weather. Julie (The host) kept great communication with us and was very attentive to anything we needed. We would absolutely love to go back and stay again! Also, there is a store and restaurant within a minute drive called James Ranch Grill and we can tell you that it was the BEST burger that we have ever had. We wish that we would have had time to buy some meat from their market because everything looked delicious and high quality. We highly recommend A Place at James Ranch!

Relaxing Stay at the Ranch

We wanted a place that would feel like home! I loved the place at James Ranch. Our host was so attentive and helpful. She even left us a lovely surprise of fresh butter and eggs.The swing on the tree was also beautiful touch to the property.The bed was soft, pillows perfect. Thank you for a fantastic stay!!We arrive late at night and due to the detailed text messages we had.no trouble finding the cottage!

The Tree Swing!

Beautifully decorated and so comfortable. Julie is a wonderful and caring host making sure you are settled in and taken care of. There is a wonderful oak tree with a swing and be sure to grab a cup of coffee and enjoy the sunrise with the bird chirping. Seriously the burgers at the cafe- do not miss them. Ahmazing!

Don’t miss this one… it’s special!

This is a very special place. The views are spectacular and the studio was lovely, comfortable and well stocked with all the essentials. We enjoyed visiting the market and grill on St. James Ranch just up the road. There is a fabulous tree swing in the yard for guests of all ages to enjoy. We very much appreciated the comfortable bed, nice shower and washer/dryer. Julie was a great host and we hope to return someday!

A Place at James Ranch

Wonderful stay. The suite was clean, roomy and well equipped for two. The highway is close and noisy at times but inside is quiet. The James Ranch Grill (just down the road) has excellent locally sourced food.

Beautiful view

The cottage was cozy and nicely decorated and furnished . Would have liked a deck facing the mountains as we like to sit outside and enjoy the weather. Bring your own washcloths, we only had 1 washcloth and 3 towels.

A million dollar view on The Million Dollar Highway

Quite a view from the back window overlooking the pastures and mountains... Place is very cozy to just read a book and glance out the window.... And of course head north on US 550 towards Silverton and Ouray and the scenery is breath taking... Don't forget to frequent the James Ranch Grill for lunch and dinner... stunningly fresh and healthy menu and for a excellent breakfast , head into down town Durango and eat at Oscars.

Cozy Stay in Hermosa Valley

This property is fantastic. Very well designed with awesome views of the valley. Proximity to the James Ranch and the Durango hot springs really elevate it to the next level. Highly recommend booking this place.

Exceeded Expectations!

Julie is a warm, friendly, wonderful host, who made us feel so very welcome! She provided everything we needed and more! And we were absolutely thrilled with the location ~ just a short walk to the James Ranch Grill and Market! The space was just perfect for us, and the views were spectacular!

James Ranch and the place at James Ranch are amazing. Julie has created a relaxing experience, wonderfully appointed with everything you could want or need. The view is amazing. We have stayed there twice and hope this won’t be the last. A true gem in all regards .

New Year at James Ranch

My Wife and I stayed at this amazing cottage on James Ranch for New Years Eve and day. The setting was perfect, the cottage above the old barn was beautifully done, comfortable, warm and romantic. We knew of James Ranch from many previous trips to the area, but we had never stayed on the property. There is no better place to stay than here. Waking up to stare out onto the pastures of the Animas river valley was amazing. We were greeted by the most amazing host, Julie, when we arrived. Julie made sure we were content and had everything we needed. The food at the James Ranch restaurant grill and the ranch market is also something to speak about...AMAZING. Both the dinner we had at the grill and then the fresh meal we picked up at the market were incredible. Imagine a homemade chicken pot pie, warming in the oven after a perfect day of skiing, having a smooth drink as the sun goes down over a pasture of grazing cattle, then a super comfortable bed and a cottage warmed by a fire, thats this place at James Ranch...we will definetly be back.

Your host, Julie James Ott, was raised on the James Ranch in Durango, CO, left the paradise of the Animas Valley for six years to travel and complete a degree at Colorado College in Colorado Springs. She and her late husband or 31 years, John Ott, a native of SW Colorado and a geologist with a degree from Fort Lewis College quickly realized the James Ranch and the wholesome community of Durango was the place for them to live and raise a family. Present day, all three of their grown sons boys are very interested in staying in agriculture and natural resources. The two eldest sons are back to work the ranch with their family.
