This house is so wonderful. It is steeped in history. You feel like you are living in a wonderful museum. The only change I would make is to have a queen bed in the master suite rather than a full. We thoroughly enjoyed the house and wouldn’t hesitate to come back!

What a beautiful home! Exactly what we needed to accommodate our out of town wedding guests. The home is well appointed, very spacious, and we had great communication from the host. You wont regret your stay here!

Quintessential New England Thanksgiving

We rented the Black Walnut House to host extended family for Thanksgiving dinner, and the house was the perfect setting. It has a big, open kitchen where cooks had room to prepare dinner and family could mill about, cozy sitting rooms for conversation, and an enormous, window-filled dining room with a sculptural table capable of seating up to 14 people (we had 13). The beds and bedding are cozy and comfortable, and we had 9 people stay comfortably. The next day we took a lovely walk in the Cato's Ridge Conservation Area nearby, as recommended by the owners.

We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful property. It is a truly peaceful setting and an authentic piece of history that has been lovingly preserved while being stunningly updated to provide a luxurious way to experience more than 200 years of American history. It was almost hauntingly beautiful in the best possible way.The kitchen and dining area left us completely in awe. In fact, my sister-in-law loved it so much that she plans to replicate elements of it in the home they’re building! The bedrooms beautifully reflect the historical period, and the loft area was absolutely amazing. I can’t say enough about the historical character and beauty of the entire property.The one thing to be aware of is that the entrance is on the basement level, which does not have a bathroom. The main level is one flight of stairs up. While the stairs were no problem for us, my very feeble mother was unable to manage them. We ultimately had to make arrangements for her to stay with family nearby. If you are traveling with someone with mobility limitations, this is definitely something to consider. Another feature that I personally loved—but my husband did not necessarily agree with me on!—is that there is only one small TV, located in the very comfortable basement living room. We actually enjoyed spending time together without the distraction.Overall, I give this home 5 stars. It’s like stepping back in time. Just be sure to consider the stairs if you have someone with disabilities.

Wish we could have stayed longer!

We made reservations last minute and were fortunate enough to have 2 nights at the Black Walnut House. What a beautiful place! We really wished we had one more day to stay and just hang out at the house. The mornings were so beautiful sitting outide and drinking coffee. Not an overly comfy situation/layout for watching a movie but the downstairs living room was great for a family game night with our adult children! The Black Walnut Tree in the frontyard is a photo op.for sure!!! I would definitely go back!!!

If you love the charm of older homes, you must stay here!

We recently rented Jennifer's house for a two night stay for a group of 8 and it worked out perfectly! The kitchen was well equipped (a larger stock pot for cooking pasta would be a nice addition), clean and spacious. Bathrooms were nicely updated and the beds were very comfortable. The feature that everyone loved was the dining room table...what a great room!! Overall, the house was spotless & suited our needs to a tee. Jennifer was great to deal with & provided all of the information we needed ahead of time. I would absolutely rent this house again. Thanks Jennifer!!

For those who love historical houses, the Black Walnut House will be an exciting place to stay. The house exterior and gounds are very attractive, and the owners have added many unique and charming touches inside. The kichen is well outfitted, and through the use of individual floor AC units, the common areas and bedrooms were comfortable in warm weather in June, with the exception of the dining room (description to follow).There were some drawbacks. The beautiful dining room is not air conditioned and pretty much unusable in warm weather. That was a surprise and disappointment as we had 7 people and had planned on having meals in that room. Some rooms have dim lighting. The sink arrangement in the bathroom nearer the street is interesting but hard to use for people of less than average height. It should perhaps be noted that people with mobility issues may find access to the loft challenging. (For most groups, this may not be an issue; but we are all in our mid-seventies.)Although Jennifer provided her phone number and messaging options, promising a quick response, she never responded to one of our messages nor to an important voice mail left on the phone number she gave us. Despite these disappointments, we had an overall nice stay.

As a nearly 300-year-old historic home, there are some original features and limitations that differ from a modern home, and we continue updating our listing so guests know what to expect. Regarding communication, I’m sorry you felt we weren’t responsive. During your stay, I responded to your request for additional sugar, which was the only request that required action. I also received messages letting me know about your minor car accident and that you weren’t feeling well, and I understood those as updates rather than requests for assistance. Love this property, old historical home completely refurbished.

Mu family was very comfortable and had an amazing time spending Thanksgiving. Very clean, cable was fine, plenty of hot water and comfortable bedding. Location was 18 minutes to downtown Plymouth, which was fine for us. Highly recommend this property.

House is beautiful! There was plenty of room for all of my family and we loved using the oversized dining area for a game night. Host was fast to respond to any concerns. Hope to be able to visit this amazing home again!

Unfortunate experience

While the home is beautiful and was advertised correctly as it related to size there were a few issues that lead to a less than positive experience. First, the description clearly states the house has air conditioning. This may not seem like a big deal to some, but for our group this was critical in the selection process for our weekend stay. The riders endured 90 miles in 90+ degree heat and could not physically cool down inside of the home. The kitchen AC unit is not adequate to cool an entire floor (even with all of the windows/doors shut), the other AC unit in the bedroom provides only 1 cool room for the entire house. And the AC unit upstairs kept shutting off due to an electrical issue which I will address. Readings from the kitchen Saturday night at 9:30 pm read 81 degrees and the loft read 88 degrees! If you plan to advertise your home to guests as being climate controlled then you need to drastically improve what is currently being offered. As a result of the discomfort related to the heat 8 guests left that night and had to stay in hotels/drive hours home. Second, the electrical system kept shutting off all night. As a result of the electrical inconsistencies the ac unit in the loft kept going off, which exacerbated the heat situation. Not to mention the WIFI kept resetting and those without service had no way of contacting anyone. Again, I understand that certain things are out of your control (i.e. heat may have put pressure on the electrical grid), but it is difficult to enjoy your stay when you have to get up from dinner every 5 minutes to avoid eating in the dark - let alone host guests. When I tried working with the host I received very strange excuses and unprofessionalism. I am very disappointed and would not recommend renting this again.

So sorry you didn’t like your experience we do suggest to guests to follow the house instructions including closing windows and doors when running all the ac units. If a guest chooses not follow the house rules we are just as baffled by their behavior as they might be as to why things don’t go the way they expected.

Wonderful house for a group

This house was perfect for a girls getaway weekend. Close to Plymouth. Stayed cool in July with the AC units provided. Beds were comfy. The kitchen and sunroom space are beautiful and the kitchen was very functional!

Very unique and historic home!

This is a beautiful and very interesting home! The history behind this home is amazing and it was fun to dig into the stories as well as all the items and trinkets within the home. We weren't there long enough to explore the large property, but is was a beautiful area and well kept. Just as in other reviews, you are staying in a very old home so don't expect many modern conveniences although they have done a good job in making it as comfortable as possible, while remaining true to its history. The bugs in the Summer are quite flourishing so be careful not to leave doors or windows open as they will love to come in and stay with you. Fun place, thank you!

Nice Visit to Plympton

Beautiful house and is exactly as portrayed on VRBO site. We were two families with adult children attending a wedding in Bridgewater. We enjoyed a morning outing at Plymouth which is 15 minutes away. Very clean and beds were comfortable. If we were to stay here again we would bring chairs to sit on the back patio area as it was a beautiful weekend.

Going back in time

This home was a historical beauty. We felt like we were going back in time each time we walked through the door. The home is beautifully decorated with antiques but had all the modern conveniences you would expect to enjoy. Jennifer was super easy to contact and always replied quickly. We had a nice stay!

An excellent get-away!

Generally, this house was a comfortable, excellent location for us to spent a weekend. We were six adult men and found that it was a place large enough for people to have space, but also to enjoy the woods, to enjoy dinners and conversation together, etc. I recommend it highly! And Jen was very good with communication and anything we needed.

The home was beautiful and the space was larger than we expected. Immaculately clean as well. The grounds were great and the baby goats next door were a hit for the kids. Jennifer was a gracious host and was quick to respond to our questions.
