This is a really nice little place. Don and Laura are fantastic hosts: very thoughtful and very quick to respond to texts.
The living room, dining room, and bedrooms are all very nicely decorated and comfortable, including the beds. Each bedroom has a closet with lots of hangers, an extra blanket, suitcase stand, portable heater, and a portable fan, and each bedroom has a chest of drawers. Because this place is relatively newly renovated, almost everything in it is also new and in pristine shape. The balcony adds to the charm of the living room as do the nearby trees.
The bathroom is all new, with a modern design. Toiletries are provided. Lots of extra towels.
The kitchen is cute and has fancy modern appliances (including a dishwasher). The pots and pans are high quality and have clear lids--really good choices. Definitely a cut above what we usually find at VRBOs. Although I usually cook a lot while on vacation, I did not do that this time. So it is hard for me to fully evaluate the kitchen. I did notice some missing items, such as measuring cups and spoons (there is one 2 cup pyrex measuring cup, but nothing smaller), serving and mixing bowls, potato masher, spatulas (the kind for flipping pancakes or stakes as well as the kind for scraping out bowls) oven mitts, placemats, tablecloth, etc. In general, I'm guessing the kitchen equipment could use a thoughtful inspection by a cook. It did have some things that one cannot always count on, such as wooden spoons and a blender.
All this said, there are many wonderful restaurants nearby, including even several vegan restaurants in walking distance, so there will be a lot of temptation, even for good cooks, to eat out. The apartment is also in walking distance of Balboa park and also a little canyon with a walking trail (a couple blocks south).
If you are very sensitive to noise, then the fan in the downstairs apartment might bug you, as it is pretty loud. (Not sure if it is a ceiling fan or a bathroom fan.) It's loudest in one of the two bedrooms and audible in most of the rest of the apartment. That said, it is just a fan noise, and for some people that will actually make is *easier* to sleep.
The apartment is on the second floor of the rear building. The stairs do not have a good railing for people who truly depend on such support. If that is you, I'd choose the downstairs apartment, which is probably just as nice.
