Elfie and Manfred were friendly hosts. Elfie greeted us on arrival and showed us the amenities, making sure we had all the basics. She also pointed out the extras, including a guidebook and a cooler and beach towels for outings. We had lots of space to spread out inside and out, since it was only two of us. I sometimes ate breakfast on the patio, even on rainy mornings. The king bed was comfy, with a ceiling fan to help cool. If you're a light sleeper, I suggest earplugs to block out the constant creature (I think frogs?) sounds at night. The floors are stone, so bring slippers if your feet/joints need support. The outdoor shower was splendid, and hosts provided body wash, shampoo and conditioner.
We spent our days driving to different destinations (waterfalls, Volcano Natl Park, beaches, Mauna Kea), and this house was a great place to come back to after a long day out. Restaurants and a grocery store are also quite close by. The house is indeed a short walk to the island's edge where you can watch waves crash against the cliffs. I conversed with the hosts a few times, and they were always amiable and gracious. They love sharing their home with new people. Overall, it was a great stay for a once-in-a-lifetime trip
