  • Peaceful retreat

"We had a wonderful, relaxing time at this comfortable home. The birds are plentiful, many wildflowers on the property, spectacular sunsets and we even saw a deer in the yard. The owners, Denise and Gene, were wonderful to work with; very accommodating and quick to respond to emails or calls. Do not hesitate to stay at this beautiful, peaceful home."

  • Absolutely everything we wanted - plus pelicans!

"Six of us - two grandparents, two parents, and two primary-age children - spent a happy week here at the end of June. The privacy of the place, the beauty of the lake, and the comfort of the cabin were all much treasured. We saw deer, foxes, pelicans, terns, wild turkey, pheasant, raccoons, and seagulls. What a delight to be in an environment that hasn’t been poisoned by toxic chemicals. Yes, there are a few spiders on the deck - as another guest has noted. One goes out in the morning and sweeps down the webs. No big deal. The cabin smelled fresh - no musty odors. We found generous supplies of toilet paper and paper towels in the kitchen closet, as well as clean towels and extra blankets in the two linen closets. Cooking gear and dishes were also generously supplied. A couple of fix-it problems came up and the housekeeper worked with us to resolve them. As I am disabled, I was happy to have a main-floor bedroom and bathroom with a walk-in shower. I was also delighted to have an Ekornes Stressless chair on hand - that’s where I spent most of the week. The beach at the cabin is rocky and the charming Liberty Grove Town Park - maybe a 10-minute walk - has a sandy beach. We found a trail from the south end of Nor-Dor Road that led down into Newport State Park, with more wonderful rocky beaches. Additional local attractions: the Shoreline Restaurant, Charlie’s Smokehouse, and the coffee shop, all in in Gills Rock; the Pioneer Store in Ellison Bay; Seaquist Orchards and the Door County Creamery in Sister Bay; the Ridges Nature Sanctuary in Bailey’s Harbor. This cabin has a unique history. We enjoyed reading stories in the guest book about its past years. It’s not perfect - no summer rental is perfect - but we found much to love and we’d go back in a minute."

  • This place made us feel at home, not just in a house

"This charming and beautiful wood-timbered home had every comfort we needed, plus all the charm of a well-cared-for and well-decorated country home. We enjoyed the four ample bedrooms, the screened porch, the outdoor seat-swing, the comfortable living room, and the spacious kitchen (perfect for multiple people to cook together.) Everything was in working order, even the remote controls on the room A/C units. We used the 2 charcoal grills and found nearly everything we needed in the kitchen except pizza pans, which we bought at the grocery store and left there for someone after us to make your own. Although the house has no water view, we really enjoyed watching the gentle light change throughout the day over the backyard meadow and the active dragonflies in the milkweed and prairie plants. Watching the clear night sky around the campfire was the ultimate vacation experience--now we were really out of the city! In our week stay with our young adult kids and partners, we went to three state parks--including riding two ferries to Rock Island--enjoyed a Northern Sky Theater musical comedy show, a big band jazz concert at Birch Creek Music Center, and an ice cream cone everyday! Door County is really an unusual mix of both cultural and natural delights. Our stay at Whytefishe helped us enjoy both."
