From Washingtonian Magazine May 2006 - "The Lost River Valley of West Virginia has been found."
"Tucked between two mountain ridges, the valley, a couple of hours from Washington, is drawing more weekenders. The lure is rugged woodland scenery, tumbling mountain streams, and outdoor fun - hiking, fishing, biking, canoeing, swimming, rafting, climbing, horseback riding."
----------------------
NOTE - This house is located privately down the road a few hundred yards from my other rental and both properties can be rented together - perfect for family reunions or two families traveling together! Each has it's own separate driveway.
Constructed in 2008 and designed by famed Katrina Cottage architect Marianne Cusato, this classic, West Virginia cottage is located in Lost City/Lost River is sure to warm your heart. Brazilian cherry hardwood floors, marble and glass tile baths, 9 foot ceilings and comfortable furniture provide a casual, country/lodge atmosphere. The location provides breathtaking vistas of the mountains from every window, the 8 foot deep front porch which extends the entire house as well and a small covered back porch with even more great views.
This vacation home sits down a small driveway from a paved road and is surrounded by thirteen acres and has eight resident goats. The thirteen acres is shared with the main rental farmhouse which is a good distance away so you still have your privacy but within walking distance if you choose to rent both. Beyond that and within walking distance are the rest of the thousands of acres that make up the George Washington National Forest.
Three great bedrooms make the home perfect for families or couples -two rooms each with a queen bed and a third room with two twin beds. One queen bedroom is downstairs with it's own bath and canopy bed (master suite). All beds have high quality 100% cotton linens. There are two full baths, one upstairs and one down. The baths have heated marble floors, glass tile walls and high-end fixtures. Soak in the upstairs bath's jetted tub with a window that overlooks the mountains and catch a glimpse of the deer and wild turkeys. Fluffy towels are provided. Farmhouse has both central air and heat which is dual zone for those who like to sleep with it cool but wake up to a warm downstairs.
There is a fully-equipped kitchen with microwave, dishwasher, toaster, coffeemaker, etc. Kitchen comes stocked with gourmet coffees and teas. There is a washer and dryer combo upstairs if you need it.
During your visit, explore the property and surrounding area on foot or by car. Rolling Meadows, rocky crags, cool forests, mountain streams and great vistas wait. Nearby Lost River State Park maintains miles of hiking trails and a horse stable in the summer. Climb or ride to Cranny Crow (elevation 3200 feet) for commanding panoramas.
Watch satellite TV (HDTV coming soon), listen to satellite radio, use the DSL WI-FI connection or do some star gazing with the telescope provided on the back deck. Or just enjoy sitting on the awesome front porch, take a nap, read a book, all without ever leaving the property.
Well-mannered pets permitted with an additional pet rent of $10 per night per pet or $50 per week per pet. Backyard is completely fenced so you don't have to worry about your dog running off into the forest(no goats in the dog area).

If you're looking for a place to get away from it all, the Cottage is it! We just spent a week there and it was perfect. Our two Coonhounds had a great yard to play in, without us worrying about them taking off into the forest. The goats were great & kept the doggies amused. If you have wandering pups, the one suggestion we have is to bring something to close off the front porch. We brought a baby gate, but it was too small, but we found an old wooden gate in the yard that fit perfectly. This way the dogs got to spend time with us on the porch with no worries. Mornings were spent having coffee on the back porch, watching the sunrise & listening to the world waking up. Evenings were "sunset cocktails" on the front porch. In between, we took walks down the road, fed the goats. There was a fantastic rainstorm one day, that ended with a sunset so beautiful, you wanted to give it a standing ovation! We ventured out to the South End grocery for some things we forgot. Nice people! We also ate at the Lost River Grill a few times--the chili is really good & if you're lucky enough, they'll have cream pies, which are sooooo yummy! Mark was so easy to deal with and Phil is terrific. He handled our minor crisis with a smile. The much-anticipated muffins were tasty, and the invitation to raid the garden was awesome! The cottage has everything you need. As nice as it looks in the pictures, it's even nicer in person. All you need to bring is your food, and a few nice bottles of wine! We've stayed in quite a few vacation homes, and the cottage ranks right up with the best. It is also very dog-friendly. It's a quiet haven to detox from everyday life & renew your spirit. We are looking forward to returning!!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

This was our second trip to the cottage and it was so much fun to be back. It was a comfortable space for six adults and we used the great kitchen to cook fabulous mother's day dinner and brunch. The goats were just as funny as the first time we visited and the dog loved, loved, loved the large fenced yard. We missed the chickens but I gather they just migrated up to the next house, so had we gotten our act together, could probably have visited them, too. Hiked in GW National Forest, went to the craft coop and had a great time. I suspect we'll be back soon to check out the new Lost River Brewing Company and other new local developments. The zucchini lemon muffins that first morning were a big hit!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

I would not hesitate to recommend this property. We needed a restful quiet spring vacation with lots of nature, time for reading, sleeping, and family board games and movies, and this charming well-appointed cottage perfectly fulfilled our needs, comfortably accommodating our family of 6. The goats, fresh eggs, and home-made muffins were icing on the cake. There were many options for hikes in the vicinity; we enjoyed lost river state park and the g washington forest, trails recommended by owners. In March, most other nearby attractions were not yet open for the season but that was not a concern for us.Recommended for: Girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Guys, I dont normally right reviews but we have to tell you we had a great time.Your home is both beautiful and inviting. We arrived thursday night after dark. So friday morning we awoke to that Beautiful countryside. Ellen and I completely lost track of time that entire weekend. I don't normally sleep well away from home but I must say that the bed was the most comfortable thing I have been in forever. The mattress and pillows were wonderful and you just "sunk" into them. With our busy lives it was a wonderfull place to take the time to reconnect. We will most certainly see you again next spring. Thanks again Ellen and PatrickDid you find this review helpful? We stayed at the cottage as a headquarters to visit our daughter in summer camp nearby. We brought our dog, Bixby, a friend, and her daughter. The cottage is lovely and comfortable. The owners take obvious care to make sure that people feel special there. We enjoyed relaxing on the front porch and hanging in the back yard. And, the goats, of course, are lots of fun.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, pet owners, families with teenagers.

We rented both properties this past new years and had an amazing time. Both houses have a good amount of space and yards for dogs to play. The houses are a great mix of the countryside while still being close enough to DC for a weekend getaway. This house is more modern with a great kitchen and living room. We're all hoping to make it back in the spring and explore a bit more of what the area has to offer. Also the muffins are as delicious as everyone says!Recommended for: Families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

We stayed in the cottage and couldn't have been more pleased with the accommodations. Since our visit occurred during the off season, the weather was not conducive to much outdoor activity. But the cottage was so well appointed we felt right at home. Mark and Phil were terrific hosts. The muffins were delicious and we really enjoyed the chickens and goats. It was so nice to visit a place where feeding the animals is encouraged. :) This was a relaxing weekend getaway. We highly recommend!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

The Cottage at Lost River is a real gem. If you're in search of utter peace and quiet, easily accessible hiking, rolling hills, and the creature comforts (nice bedrooms, 2 reading porches, fresh eggs from the chicken coop) that make any vacation memorable, this is the place for you. Head to Lost River, kick back, and just relax.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 3/3
