From Washingtonian Magazine May 2006 - "The Lost River Valley of West Virginia has been found."

"Tucked between two mountain ridges, the valley, a couple of hours from Washington, is drawing more weekenders. The lure is rugged woodland scenery, tumbling mountain streams, and outdoor fun - hiking, fishing, biking, canoeing, swimming, rafting, climbing, horseback riding."

----------------------
NOTE - This house is located privately down the road a few hundred yards from my other rental and both properties can be rented together - perfect for family reunions or two families travelling together! Each has it's own seperate driveway.

Constructed just this year and designed by famed Katrina Cottage architect Marianne Cusato, this classic, West Virginia cottage is located in Lost City/Lost River is sure to warm your heart. Brazilian cherry hardwood floors, marble and glass tile baths, 9 foot ceilings and comfortable furniture provide a casual, country/lodge atmosphere. The location provides breathtaking vistas of the mountains from every window, the 8 foot deep front porch which extends the entire house as well and a small covered back porch with even more great views.

This vacation home sits down a small driveway from a paved road and is surrounded by thirteen acres and has eight resident goats. The thirteen acres is shared with the main rental farmhouse which is a good distance away so you still have your privacy but within walking distance if you choose to rent both. Beyond that and within walking distance are the rest of the thousands of acres that make up the George Washington National Forest.

Three great bedrooms make the home perfect for families or couples -two rooms each with a queen bed and a third room with two twin beds. One queen bedroom is downstairs with it's own bath and canopy bed (master suite). All beds have high quality 100% cotton linens. There are two full baths, one upstairs and one down. The baths have heated marble floors, glass tile walls and high-end fixtures. Soak in the upstairs bath's jetted tub with a window that overlooks the mountains and catch a glimpse of the deer and wild turkeys. Fluffy towels are provided. Farmhouse has both central air and heat which is dual zone for those who like to sleep with it cool but wake up to a warm downstairs.

There is a fully-equipped kitchen with microwave, dishwasher, toaster, coffeemaker, etc. Kitchen comes stocked with gourmet coffees and teas. There is a washer and dryer combo upstairs if you need it.

During your visit, explore the property and surrounding area on foot or by car. Rolling Meadows, rocky crags, cool forests, mountain streams and great vistas wait. Nearby Lost River State Park maintains miles of hiking trails and a horse stable in the summer. Climb or ride to Cranny Crow (elevation 3200 feet) for commanding panoramas.

Watch satellite TV (HDTV coming soon), listen to satellite radio, use the DSL WI-FI connection or do some star gazing with the telescope provided on the back deck. Or just enjoy sitting on the awesome front porch, take a nap, read a book, all without ever leaving the property.

Well-mannered pets permitted with an additional pet rent of $10 per night per pet or $50 per week per pet. Backyard is completely fenced so you don't have to worry about your dog running off into the forest(no goats in the dog area).

    • The Cottage at Lost River is a real gem. If you're in search of utter peace and quiet, easily accessible hiking, rolling hills, and the creature comforts (nice bedrooms, 2 reading porches, fresh eggs from the chicken coop) that make any vacation memorable, this is the place for you. Head to Lost River, kick back, and just relax.

    • We can't recommend this vacation rental highly enough! The house was well appointed, the owners were very generous (freshly baked muffins were delivered to us, the chickens left us plenty of eggs, and the garden provided great veggies!), and the area was beautiful! Thank you for a wonderfully relaxing week!

    • This vacation and the rental property exceeded expectations at every level. We will definitely be coming back. Phil and Mark ROCK! Our son was being called the Chicken Whisperer by the time we left.

    • What a great house! We couldn't of had better hosts and it provided us with a great opportunity to just get away from it all. We spent every evening sitting on the porch, sipping wine and listening to the crickets...and nothing else. Talk about peace and quiet!

    • We stayed the Mar 28-29 weekend at the Farmhouse. Even though the weather was dreary the stay was wonderful. The house is very comfortable and was a great place to unwind. Mark and Phil are inviting gracious hosts who truly care about your comfort (...and the wonderful muffins). They patiently answered all our questions and told us about their goats, chickens and turkey. Even better was opportunity to feed the animals, pick fresh eggs, and let the chickens out to stretch their legs. Our 3-year old son absolutely love it and has been talking about the stay for the past 3 weeks. If you are looking to leave the stresses of your week behind this is the place.

    • An incredible rental! Our time at Lost River was so relaxing, the week felt like a month. Wonderful views, a cozy atmosphere, and great hiking. The house is well appointed and comfortable. Mark and Phil are great hosts--from the moment we sent the first e-mail, they were responsive, accommodating, and provided lots of helpful information that made our trip a breeze. We had a wonderful time, and I think our dog had about the best week of her life. We will definitely be back!

    • What more can I say but this is a GREAT rental. It's not often that you can find a weekend getaway that 1) is an easy 2 hour drive from DC 2) has all the modern conveniences of home 3) has a comfortable bed 4) has outdoor activity just outside the doorstep 5) has incredibly hospitable hosts and 6) is dog friendly with a FENCED yard!! The only thing missing is a hot tub for the cold WV nights and a cozy wine bar in the "town". Perhaps Phil and Mark could work up a new business venture ;-)

    • We spent an amazing week at the Lost City Farmhouse Cottage in October. It provided a beautiful balance of the best amenities (wonderful linens, tasteful decor, jacuzzi, satellite TV and Wi-Fi) with perfect tranquility(millions of stars, laying hens, adorable goats, invigorating hiking, spectacular mountain vistas and a 20-minute drive for cell phone service--the best blessing of all). Our dogs adored romping in the huge fenced yard and splashing in the chill water of The Willows. Even when we stayed home, the view from every window was amazing. Mark and Phil were attentive while leaving us be, and the homemade banana bread was delicious. All this just two hours from the madness of DC--we'll come again!!

    • Lost City farmhouse cottage is the most relaxing, serene place we have visited. Mark and Phil are the most wonderful hosts welcoming you into their home and finding time to visit with you and direct you on where to go. We had a marvelous time in their beautiful "cottage" which is really a gorgeous home. Don't miss the wonderful hiking just minutes from your doorstep. Kate and Albie

    • What a lovely place to stay and relax! Our little girls loved feeding the chickens, collecting the eggs for breakfast, and feeding the baby goat. The house is gorgeous and just so much fun with all of the thoughtful decorative touches that just fit right in. Mark and Phil are incredibly nice, helpful, and welcoming. Thanks so much!
