Accommodations: Apartment, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 4)
Charming one bedroom, one bathroom furnished ground floor apartment in historic Old San Juan, located in the residence of the late Master Puerto Rican painter Alfonso Arana.
This beautiful building of restored Spanish Colonial architecture is characterized by thick walls and brick-stone floors; all doors of the apartment open to a private, lush, interior garden. With ceiling fans throughout (no air-conditioned), this lovely apartment has an airy, tropical feel.
This is an “L” shaped, open floor plan apartment with a fully functioning kitchen. The bedroom has a queen size bed, and is separated by an archway from the living room, which can easily be used as a second bedroom. This setting is ideal for individuals, couples, and small families.
Our apartment is on calle San José, the entryway of which is a gallery space of local artists. Around the corner you will find the Cathedral and the City Hall. It is one block from the main square Plaza de Armas, where you can find a supermarket and open air cafés, wonderful restaurants and bakeries. We are very near the 16th century fortress El Morro and a 20 minute walk he Escambron Beach.

Why the Owner Chose San Juan
We spent our early childhood in Old San Juan. Our house was in the Caleta de las Monjas until our departure to France in the early 1970's.
In 1982 our father, the late painter Alfonso Arana, returned to buy this house in Calle San Jose and it became our family home. It is a beautiful building with the patio on the ground floor and beautiful terraces upstairs. Our father, used to call it "his Palace"....
In 2009, we the children, decided to open the house for guests, and furnished the downstairs apartment for vacation rentals. My brother lives on the 2nd and 3d floor of the house, my sister Isabel lives in Massachusetts and I reside in Connecticut. We love our Old San Juan home and hope you enjoy your stay there.

We stayed here a week for our honeymoon, which was our first trip to PR. It was a great location. Walking distance to anything you need. Like the description says, there is no A/C. Kitchen is stocked with anything you might need to cook with, and Luis is happy to help if you don't have something you need. We made Puerto Rican coffee every morning. Staying here made us feel like we experienced the city, instead of just being tourists in a resort. There are plenty of tourist attractions nearby as well. Luis could sell his services as a tour guide, and he is a wonderful host.

It was great to be in the heart of Old san juan. I had a sprain ankle but was able to visit easily the area. There is a free trolly just 2 blocks away to go around. There is also a Coach factory just 2 blocks away. Very big apartment with your own courtyard. Luis was great. The apartment was a bit warm even with all the fans but beautiful place. I received my damage deposit back very quickly. Thank you Luis!

When we first arrived, everything seemed fine...until we ventured out. Upon our return, we realized there was no air conditioning or a television. Then when we further inspected the kitchen, there were cockroaches in the cabinets. Needless to say, although we were supposed to stay 8 days, we left the first night. I have to say that Luis and Cristian were understanding to our concerns.

We stayed here in this BEAUTIFUL apartment for two days on our recent trip to Puerto Rico. My only regret was not being able to stay longer! Truly and simply gorgeous all through out this private apartment right in the heart of Old San Juan!! Rich in history and dripping with class! I feel lucky to have had the privilege to stay here even for just two days. Everything from the beautiful art on the walls to lush garden in the center of it all, it was just breathtaking. This apartment was very comfortable and romantic. The private courtyard was amazing and is open up above so the soft rain in the evening put my sound machine to shame! Everything is open and breezy. I just loved everything! Luis was great !!!. He was very hospitable and welcoming. I have stayed in many B&B's and have never felt so at home as I did here! I would recommend staying here to anyone who is looking for a safe and relaxing atmosphere, the convenience of shops and food within walking distance and sightseeing to keep you busy for days. Lightning fast return of our deposit, made it to us in just 3 days after our vacation!! All in all our stay was... simply put, amazing. Would definitely recommend to friends and family. The apartment was very clean and well maintained. The owner couldn't have been any better, he was great. Everything was as describe, except the pictures do this place little justice, it is even more beautiful in person. As far as things to do, the list is never ending. The stay was incredibly affordable as well!! I have not a single negative thing to say about our stay. We will be back for sure. Thank you so much Rosa and Luis for making our trip extra special!!!

My husband and I spent a wonderful week here in November 2010. The apartment was perfect for us. We appreciated the quiet courtyard for our relaxing moments, and the central location was so convenient for venturing out to explore the whole of Old San Juan, on foot. The apartment was comfortable and clean, with everything we needed on hand. We visited some of the many restaurants in the area, but also enjoyed some very pleasant and peaceful meals, sitting at our table in our private courtyard. Luis was and excellent host, living on the premises, and there for us should we need help or advice. The building itself was of great interest to us, part of it built in the 1700's, it was previously owned by Luis' father, a very well known Puerto Rican artist who used to have a gallery there. No greater place to get your San Juan culture fix!

My husband and I stayed here in March 2009 for a week. The apartment is absolutely beautiful with the open courtyard. The accomodations were clean, bright, and perfect for what we were expecting to find. Luis was so accomodating and helpful to us about recommendations on beaches, restaurants, etc. We have very fond memories of the apartment. If you want to really experience OSJ, this is the place to be. It was great to be in the neighborhood within walking distance to everything. We enjoyed it so much, we have built in a return to the apartment for 2 days of our travel in 2011. We have highly recommended this destination to many of our friends/family.
