Architecture & Comfort in a True Venetian Family Home

We are a family of 5 from Ireland and we fell in love with Venice. Our apartment is on the top floor of a 3 storey building, in the Castello area of Venice. It has been completely renovated by a Venetian architect in 2009 and now has all home comforts, but all the character and quirks of the original building maintained. We added a roof-top terrace or Venetian Altana, and this gives a private space from which to sit out with coffee at breakfast or enjoy a glass of wine as the heat goes out of the day. The Altana looks out over the roof-tops of Venice, as far as the San Marco Campanile and out to the Dolomite mountains beyond. It is rare indeed in Venice to have an Altana, and it is a prized addition to any property. The apartment has air conditioning and central heating, a fully fitted kitchen and a high level of comfort and luxury throughout. The master bedroom has an en-suite bathroom and generous wardrobe space. The second bedroom contains single beds (as does the master) and both rooms can be configured for couples or friends sharing. The third bedroom has generous bunk beds, and a travel cot is available for babies. The original roof timbers of the building have been painstakingly restored, and the original roof tiles removed, cleaned and replaced. No aspect of design or comfort has been neglected in this wonderful family home, which is bright, spacious and airy.
It is a perfect spot from which one can experience the real Venice, where washing is hung out early morning, and the smells of lunch cooking waft through the square by mid morning. Via Garibaldi is 2 minute's walk away, and this bustling commercial street has all the services one could want for cooking and living: a fruit & vegetable stall on a barge, fishmongers, butchers, bakeries and plenty of friendly bars and restaurants. There is a supermarket 20 seconds from the apartment, and a small trattoria across the square. You will feel like you are a true Venetian as you get used to the slower pace of life in a city with no cars, and no stress...
We have recently installed a broadband WiFi network, a BLIK internet radio, and a Samsung flat screen tv, with DVD /Blu Ray player. We have a small DVD library too. There is wisteria growing up on the altana and a herb garden. And even a yoga mat for those who might like to do yoga in the early morning up on the altana.

This apartment was a wonderful surprise at the top of three flights of stairs. It was modern, spacious and comfortable with the added bonus of a beautiful altana. Plenty room for 5 adults, well equipped. Information given prior to and on arrival was comprehensive and accurate. Loved the coloured cutlery and using the window clothes pulley. Hated leaving and would certainly stay again if ever in Venice.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

We had a great time. The house is lovely and comfortable. The location can't be beat if you really want to experience the Venetian lifestyle and get away from touristy locations. Eileen is welcoming and very good at providing information and feedback. I will be back again As far as the amenities in the house, there are no complaints. You will not be disappointed. The steps up to the unit are a bit rough, but given they are hundreds of years old, I'm not complaining. The little garden and seating area at the top of the unit was the icing on the cake!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thanks Pam, much appreciated! Hope you will be back again, and don't forget to ask for your repeat guest discount....! Best wishes, Eileen

Absolutely brilliant ,as others have attested, and as advertised, Location convenient to good restaurants, shops and transportation ,and just 200 M away from San Pietro di Castello, a truly interesting Basilica. Clean, quiet, modern, airy, private. Plenty of electrical outlets and adaptors for all your , and your children's, recharging needs. The location is definitely in a residential neighborhood. That makes your stay here as much of a submersion experience as you are likely to find in Venice. The Trattoria across the Campo is definitely an Italian neighborhood experience. A few words of basic Italian will do wonders for you here as in most other places of business. Very accommodating and responsive hosts. Eileen's systematic approach to providing information on all aspect of one's stay made the stay fun and easy, from Really easy key pickup and drop to leaving by train. Before you go, check the web for planned labor strikes. We didn’t, they did and only by luck made it to the train. Eileen made the accommodations available to us had we not gotten out. I do not hesitate to recommend Campo Ruga to everyone.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thanks for the generous comments Jim, it was a pleasure to have you at the apartment, Best wishes, Eileen

We are 2 couples who were lucky enough to stay at the Campo Ruga flat for a week and we fully agree with the other reviewers’ enthusiastic comments. The property description and photographs are absolutely accurate. It was great to collapse in the comfortable living room and just gaze up at the roof timbers after a long day of sightseeing. We didn’t mind the steps to the 3rd floor and appreciated the peace and quiet with no one overhead. Sitting on the altana at sunset was bliss. We, too, felt like locals as we picked up food and wine from the friendly people in the shops on Via Garabaldi or hung our washing on the clothesline over the campo. Eileen is extremely helpful and a pleasure to deal with. We’d love to come back to this unique place.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children.
Owner response: Thanks Ellen, you were equally lovely clients to deal with so I'm delighted that it worked out well. With best wishes, Eileen

What a wonderful place! We loved the flat - it was roomy, bright and tasteful. With two teens, it was nice to spread out. There are all kinds of nooks and crannies and the kids said it would be a great place for Hide and Seek! It is a third floor unit, so be prepared for steps. Lots of them. We got a kick out of washing clothes and then hanging them on the line over the courtyard - we felt very Italian! It was also great to be off the beaten path. We felt like a traveler, not a tourist. It was about a five minute walk to the Vapretto stop and then all kinds of resources on Garibaldi. The fruits and veggies on the barge were wonderful, as were the many local restaurants and businesses. From the Vaporetto stop, it was maybe a five to seven minute run to San Marco square. Also, we felt VERY safe in the neighborhood. The owners were a delight to work with.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, tourists without a car, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

This was my second visit to the apartment. It really is special. The location is great - living like a ventian not a tourist in a quiet area that is accessible. The apartment has everything needed and the design is modern and fun. We will be back again for sure and recommend this home to all.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children.
Owner response: Hi Stephen, Thanks so much for taking the time to post this. We were delighted to welcome you back to the apartment and are really pleased to have a repeat customer... With best wishes, Eileen

My wife, two grown children (18 and 22) and myself had a short but great stay here. We arrived late afternoon and had no difficulty in following Eileen's great and detailed directions to the apartment, which began with a beautiful ride on the #1 vaporetto for the length of the Grand Canal. (We got on at the first station, before the train station, and got seats up front.) We loved the location, in a neighborhood mostly populated by locals but just a very short walk from via Garibaldi and from there to the canal and San Marco (about 20 minutes walk to San Marco). First thing we did was to go the market right around the corner and the second was to enjoy a couple of shared beers up on the altava-- really lovely (but don't expect a lot of room up there). The seating space in the apartment was comfortable, beds were good, bathrooms fine, all modern and clean. The internet was fast and the apartment quiet. We were okay with the stairs but visitors should be aware they need to climb three flights. We appreciated having the washing machine (finally had figured out European washing machines) and the clothes rack upstairs for drying. The only small negative is that the A/C is in the main room so the bedrooms don't cool quite as effectively; whether this would bother you depends on how cool you like it for sleeping. The owners have a nice book with instructions on various aspects of the apartment and some restaurant recommendation and so forth, and were extremely helpful to us-- most importantly in helping us find a water taxi for our early departure to the airport. We stopped at Al Covo, which was recommended by the owners, and it turned out that one of the chefs there (maybe chef/owner) is from Lubbock, Texas, and lives in the same neighborhood (i.e. Campo Ruga); we ended up having a truly memorable dinner there (though be aware it was quite expensive, about 80 euro per person, but we went full boat-- 2 bottles of wine, desserts, a shared appetizer). Also check out Pensione Wildner on the canal for lunch or dinner. All in all I would strongly recommend this apartment.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.
Owner response: Thank you both, for your generous and constructive comments... Wish you well and hope that we may see you again at Campo Ruga. With best wishes, Eileen + Family.

Campo Ruga is a beautiful and bright apartment, very close to absolutely everything you could possibly need for a self-catering stay in Venice. Gazing out across the tiled rooftops was lovely, with no room looking straight across into a neighbours window, as in much of Venice. Both the bakery and supermarket are just off the Campo, and anything else can be found a few minutes stroll away on the Via Garibaldi. It is just a short hop on the vaparetto from the Giardini stop to S.Marco etc, or a very pleasant 15-minute walk. We found the location great too for getting the boat in the other direction from the S.Pietro stop to the islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello. It was wonderful to live amongst the venetians and their real shops and restaurants, away from the more touristy areas, but still be so close to everything. Can recommend the pizza at Il Tosi and venetian food and entertainment at Georgione's nearby, although the Trattoria in Campo Ruga itself is really just a bar, with sad efforts at food and eclectic opening times. Venice was absolutely freezing during our stay, with a lot of ice in the canals, but the apartment was always warm and cosy throughout, which is a considerable achievement in such a lovely old building. We were a little worried about the old stairs and the walk to the Giardini vaparetto as we had two elderly relatives with us, but neither proved to be a problem, and the proximity of such excellent places to eat and shop and the quality of the apartment amply compensated to a little effort climbing stairs!Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

Thanks Eileen, the 2 days we had in Venice were the best of our vacation, and your apartment figured big in this. Not only were you super patient and helpful before the trip, but you gave us a slice of heaven. We managed to fit 5 people on the altana for breakfast (it was a squeeze but worth it), had way too much wine and Spritz up there, and everybody enjoyed themselves very much. The only joking complaint from my dad was that for his 90th birthday, he would like to have a lift installed....Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Thanks Silke, You are very generous with your comments, and we hope to see you again some day in Venezia... Best wishes, Eileen

Hi Eileen, The apartment was fantastic! What a great location - we loved that it was outside of the tourist area, yet a short walk to everything. The little supermarket around the corner was perfect for all of our needs and the guys loved checking out the meat shops - had great veal meatballs one night and another night a rolled roast-type thing made from sausage, ham, chicken and bacon - all with pasta of course. We had some wonderful meals at the apartment - everything we needed was there. And we all thought that the beds were the most comfortable that we had ever slept on in Europe - even the pull out couch. Thank you so much for allowing us to stay in your Venice rental!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

About the owner: An Irish family who have a tiny corner of Venice to themselves. We visit when we can, and are happy to share the unique experience that is Venetian life with like minded guests. We hope our visitors enjoy their time in this most special of cities.
Why the Owner Chose Venice:
We bought in the Castello area of Venice because it is still truly authentically Venetian and although the area is free from the dense crowds and glass shops at every turn, it is still only a short stroll back to the thick of the action. It is wonderful to visit San Marco Square and the Rialto, but to escape back to the tranquility that is Castello at the end of a long day of walking!
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
The property is so bright and airy, sunshine and light floods the spaces within. The Altana is a private spot from which to get a sense of the city, as one looks out at the vaporetto boats moving around the lagoon and the Arsenale shipyard below. The apartment is a real family home, and we enjoy cooking big meals with lots of the local wine to add to the experience..
