3BR Accommodation (New Private Shore-Front Home) on Pictou Island
Location: Pictou Island, Nova Scotia, Canada (2 hr commute from Halifax Int'l; Passenger Ferry Accessible)
Accommodations: House, 3 Bedrooms + No additional sleeping rooms avail, 2 Baths (Sleeps 6)
Set off the beaten path, this southern-style home on Pictou Island is available for weekly rentals, and is perfect for families seeking to re-connect with each other and nature. Situated on the shore of the Northumberland Strait, overlooking 540 ft. of some of the most beautiful water-front Nova Scotia has to offer, this beach house on Canada's east coast comes with acres of solitude and all you basically need for the island to feel like a home you'll want to keep coming back to ...
Pictou Island is 5 miles long, 1 1/2 miles wide, and is situated halfway between Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. It is home to eight families year round, and most households are sustained in part by the spring lobster fishery (in May & June).
As the island is only accessible by passenger ferry, owners of this property are happy to provide guests with access to bicycles for getting around the island. More info about the island and how to get here available upon request. Or, for ferry schedule, click on below link.
The master bedroom is spacious, there's plenty of room for the queen-size bed and cozy reading area. There's a seated shower stall in the ensuite. There's a double in the other main guest, situated to make the most of this room's restful view of the water and adjacent wild-flower meadow. West of the property is one of the nicest beaches on the island . The third bedroom is ideal for kids with its twin bunks. There's a built-in tub & shower surround unit in the main bathroom.
The kitchen is well-equipped, as there is no corner store to run to on the island. Expect to find for your convenience essential ingredients; flour, sugar, salt, pepper and a variety of herbs and spices to help make all your meals in this home special. Having a kitchen that's open to the dining/living area, with everyone together, is also sure to add to your family's meal-time enjoyment.
Need some quiet time too? Well this home's large screened-in porch is an especially good place to sneak away to, with your book and a cool drink. And, remember, with the beach 'right there', you can always go for a swim ... 'shop' for seaside treasures. For others, simply viewing and heeding the water's soothing sounds will be enough.
Next to the screened-in porch, there's an open cedar-deck area too, especially good for out-door lounging, star-gazing at night, having a barbeque ANY time. West of the property is one of the nicest beaches on the island .
Best of all: a visit to Pictou Island means guests get to experience first-hand exactly how easy environmentally-friendly living can be, when the house is solar-powered to provide you with all the necessary amenities and conveniences. There's also an easy-to-use generator on-site to run this home's washer.
Chances are, here, weary consumers will be happy. With NO STORE of any description on the island, there's nothing commercial to detract from sandy beaches and the warmest water north of the Carolinas.
Pictou Island is also a perfect escape from the pressures of modern life in the cooler months. So why not come see for yourself why a lot of the locals actually prefer autumn in Nova Scotia. Its warm days, clear skies, and stiff breezes make it ideal for artists, sailors and all out-door enthusiasts alike.

July 2006 - just spent a lovely week of total relaxation. The cottage is lovely with its airy rooms, beautiful views and screened in porch. Spent many long hours walking along the private beach - enjoyed the friendliness of everyone as well. Thank you for providing us with a perfect place to rest and relax. We will miss the sound of the ocean and the breeze off the porch the most. Hope to go back one day.... The Hunters
Owner response:Thanks, Claire, you're all very welcome ... pleasure having you. Gill & Paul

This vacation had it all - for parents and children: beautiful beaches; georgeous, immaculate and comfortable cottage; and helpful hosts. The week our family spent exploring, swimming, snorkelling, beachcombing, and reading and relaxing in the sun room went by much too fast!

Excerpted from an email we received, confirming receipt of their deposit back: "... stayed in a lot of places around the world, having been in the military, and I can honestly say I have never had a more relaxing and more accommodating host. I'm only sorry we didn't stay longer ... Your home is wonderful but it really is your attention to detail and the way you make your guests at ease that make the vacation that much better."

We found written in beach house guest-book: "We all had a wonderful time, even though the weather was not the best (for our 3-day visit). Your accommodations are super--much more than we expected. Thank you so much."

Reunited for the first time in a long while, this nice, really close-knit family (our first rental party EVER originally from Pictou) wrote us this thank-you card after: "Paul & Gill, thank you for providing the perfect setting for our wonderful holiday. It was everything I hoped for and much more! Sitting in that screened-in porch I felt myself relax more than I have in a very long time. Without a doubt this was the best vacation I've ever had. Your cottage was just perfect for what I needed. Brenda Had a great time! Thanks, John"

Re-connecting with a brother and his family, on the island for a 2-week visit, this couple had to leave a day early and we were happy to receive this thank-you email from them after: "We really enjoyed our stay at your cottage. It is well-designed and well built. Around urban Ottawa, it is against fire code to have windows on the side of buildings, so most houses have windows only at the front and at the rear. Sometimes, if the wind isn't blowing right, you get no circulation. It was so great to have windows on all sides. I also really enjoyed using the kitchen. Everything is in the right place and not too far out of reach. A Beach House is a better description of the place, since it is definitely much nicer than what I think a cottage is. After 2 weeks we did finally get the hang of digging clams. We had quite a few of them. Now that we know how to look for them, we know we could handle "Survivor: Pictou Island". "

Re-connecting with a sister and her family on the island for a 2-week visit, after this couple and their children left, we found this wonderful thank-you card on the dining-room table, next to a can of home-made cookies (they were delicious!)and a really nice bottle of wine (thanks guys!): "Thank you for welcoming us to your wonderful island. Our family vacation here on Pictou has been nothing short of spectacular. Every one of us leaves Pictou with some wonderful memories ... breakfast on the porch with the soothing waves and bird calls; the visits by the local hummingbirds (of course, as city folk, we initially thought the buzzing noise was due to some nasty island bug and we all shivered at the thought of this imaginary insect and its huge sucker!); swimming in the Strait at the end of a hot day; digging up bar clams with the receding tide (Yum Yum!); chasing crabs among the rocks; the beautiful sunsets and moonlight walks along the beach ... above all, who can forget your pristine little cottage and your generosity. Thank you for making our vacation to Pictou so enjoyable."

My family and I have vacationed on Pictou Island the last three summers and consider it the perfect family-centered get-away. We have three children ages 10, 14 and 16 and we never heard them say they were bored. Low tide would arrive just steps from our door and they'd be off for hours, playing in the warm and gentle surf. The beaches here in Maine are beautiful, but the water is too cold and rentals are prohibitively expensive. We found we could afford three weeks on Pictou Island for every one on the Maine coast. Wonderful hosts, gorgeous views and no traffic! Why go anywhere else?

At the end of their stay in August, 2004, Sherrie wrote in beach-house guestbook: "Creating a family vacation which will span generations and fuel 'I remember when' has a lot more to do with time spent together rather than the location being a major tourist destination. Time to spend together discovering nature--starfish, jelly fish, seeing how clams dig themselves back into the sand, changing tides, sand-polished rocks, iridescent shells of varying shapes and colours. Walks in the woods to find bright orange fungi, caterpillars, bright blue stellar Jays gliding tree to tree, tiny bell flowers, wild roses and 'discovering' a pond laced with bulrushes. Watching rabbits nibble on grass only feet away. Experiencing sun rises through the trees and sunsets which colour the sky. Watching the moon create a shimmering golden path across dancing waters. Amazed at how bright stars really are when not viewed through smog. Seeing and listening to each other rather than a TV. Putting on impromptu shows and discovering hidden talents which receive heartfelt applause. Playing games together and laughing. Having the soft rhythmic surf usher in sleep, with salt air breezes keeping even the hottest days comfortable. Welcoming the rain as another excuse to use the screened sunporch and listen to the rain upon the roof. Finding a rainbow which sparks a conversation of what one would do with a pot of gold. Enjoying wide sea vistas, pastures rimmed with wild flowers and lots of privacy. The only neighbours within sight (1/8 mile) is the home of helpful hosts Gillian and Paul. All this without leaving the large property upon which sits this most charming of cottages. Beyond is the rest of tiny hospitable Pictou Island, off the coast of Nova Scotia, where building memories seems to be a speciality of the area. Thank You ... "
