Property description

Three Maples is located on a quiet street – NOT on the highway! – just three blocks from downtown Waitsburg, a historic, pedestrian-friendly town in beautiful wheat farming country. The cozy, welcoming cottage is perfect for two couples, families of four, or simply to indulge you and that special person in a luxurious private nest for two.

Completely refurbished, this century-old cottage has two private queen bedroom/bathroom suites, each with a clothing wall, and pillow-top, extra-deep mattresses. One bathroom has an extra-large (rodeo!) shower, the other a beautifully restored and luxurious 1929-vintage clawfoot bathtub.

The entire cottage has been completely restored and everything (except some of the antique furnishings) is brand new. Enjoy a fully-equipped kitchen with new appliances, a laundry room, wi-fi and a private, 1/3-acre, fenced and landscaped garden. The cottage features an all-new heat pump for ultra-quiet heat and cooling.

Visitors to wine country will find it especially convenient to return to a quiet, comfy home after a day of tasting, where you may refresh and relax, and then walk to the best bar in eastern Washington, dine at a great southern food restaurant, or simply cook up a meal in your own kitchen with supplies from the nearby farmers' market and fromagerie. Guests receive a complementary bottle of wine – good wine! – for each night of their stay.

Summer days in here in the valley are sunny and quite warm. Summer evenings in Waitsburg are glorious, warm and dry. The night sky is filled with stars and there are very few insects. Spring and fall are quite beautiful, with daytime temperatures climbing into the 70s and 80s, and cooler evenings (bring layers!). The cottage is convenient to Walla Walla, yet a world apart, with no traffic (and no traffic lights!). Waitsburg is pedestrian-friendly and authentic. This is small town America at its best – like a trip back in time.

Custom wine tasting events and guidance on local wineries and restaurants are available from the owners, who live across the street and are intimately connected with the region's food and wine purveyors. Outdoor recreational activities abound. Bird watching can be done from the comfort of your patio – Waitsburg is on a major migration path for dozens of species. From April through November there are wine events, rodeos, vintage car shows, theatre and music festivals and many other outdoor activities happening throughout the region. The area is a haven for bicycle riding, hiking, antiquing, rafting, skiing, fly fishing, golf and just about any outdoor activity you can name.

Waitsburg is also the only town in Washington with its own camel. We'll give you walking directions and a bag of carrots to take when you go visit Izzie - a kids' favorite and a real sweetheart. You will never meet a gentler camel. Bottom line – we love this place; we live here year-round, and we are absolutely certain you won't want to leave once you've stayed here.

Please check the comments that some of our early visitors have left. And don't hesitate to write us with your questions. If we can do anything to make your visit to wine country more enjoyable, we are happy to oblige!

Owner info

Year Purchased: 2008

About the owner: Paul Gregutt is the best-known, most-widely read and respected independent journalist covering the wines and wineries of the Pacific Northwest. His wine column appears each Sunday in the Seattle Times, and monthly in the Spokane Spokesman-Review. He is the Northwest editor for Wine Enthusiast magazine. A new edition of his critically acclaimed book – “Washington Wines & Wineries – The Essential Guide” was released in 2010. Online you’ll find him blogging regularly at paulgregutt dot com. Apart from wine writing, Paul is a songwriter, guitar player and frequent entertainer around Walla Walla, often with his duo 'Where's Mary'. At the Anchor bar in Waitsburg, he is one half of the Wicker Chair Winos. Look for us on Thursday evenings. Karen Stanton-Gregutt filmed, directed and edited the award-winning, feature length documentary 'Ginny Ruffner - A Not So Still Life.' Her career as a filmmaker and producer has taken her around the world, working for major corporate clients. She is an avid gardener, as you will see when you look out your cottage windows. Both owners love to garden, travel, cook, drink great wine, and show off the charms and treasures of Waitsburg. They own two cats (both cats are Waitsburg natives) and far too many guitars.

Why the Owner Chose Waitsburg:
We chose to buy our own vacation home in Waitsburg in 2005. After many happy visits (coming from our long term home in Seattle), we made the full time move to Waitsburg in 2010. The opportunity to open a vacation rental cottage and business has intrigued us for years; now it has become a reality. In fact, a second cottage – the Tea House – is now open see our listing on VRBO # 395051!!

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Above all, we enjoy the peace, the quiet, the small town friendliness, the fresh air, the natural sounds of birds and children playing, the brilliant night sky full of stars. We love the warm evenings, the soft breezes, the terrific local produce and farm-raised meats and cheeses. We walk the three blocks to downtown where we meet friends, neighbors, visiting artists and chefs and winemakers, people from all walks of life and all parts of the globe. We simply love the relaxation that Waitsburg affords, all the while being quite close to vineyards, wineries, Whitman college, and all the amenities of the 'big' city of Walla Walla which is just a 20 minute drive away on a beautiful country road.
