Overview of Iceland Vacation Rentals
Getting to Iceland Vacation Rentals
The main international airport is located approximately 30 miles outside of the capital city of Reykjavik. The Kevlavik International Airport hosts regularly scheduled flights from many major U.S. cities, including Boston, New York City, Orlando and Minneapolis St. Paul. There are also frequent daily flight connections with Europe. Most flights route via London. Iceland is also a popular stop for cruise ships crossing the Atlantic. There are ferry services that connect Iceland with Germany, Norway and Denmark. Taxis operate in all major cities and serve the adjoining airports. There is also an extensive bus service in Iceland which is the more affordable way to get around. Car hire is available and rentals can be organized at the airports.
Visitors to Iceland Lodging
Iceland is one of those travel destinations that most first-time travelers won't think of visiting. Rather it is a destination that well-seasoned and more adventurous travelers prefer. The many distinctive natural attractions are things that you won't find anywhere else in the world. It is also a relatively expensive destination and therefore attracts the more affluent traveler. Those who love nature and the outdoors won't have a moment to spare if they want to explore all that Iceland has to offer. The birdwatching and whale watching are reported to be some of the best in Europe.
Iceland Travel Recommendations
Iceland is often referred to as the land of fire and ice, owing to the many volcanoes and glaciers that dominate the landscape. It is a destination that attracts the more adventurous traveler and offers a variety of cultural and outdoor activities. Snowmobile adventures are offered on the glaciers and make for a thrilling experience. Horseback riding excursions traverse lava fields and deserted beaches, and are a great way to explore the country. Iceland has some of the best whale watching sites in the world. Here, you can see humpback, minke, blue and sperm whales among others.
If you enjoy hiking, there are many routes you can follow. Some of the more popular hiking regions are in the Skaftafell National Park and Westfjords area. The Snaefellnes Peninsula is also known for its beautiful scenery. Because of the geothermal activity on Iceland, there are many areas that have mineral baths. The Blue Lagoon is one such area that attracts many visitors each year. The Westmann Islands are the breeding grounds for puffin. Each spring, these cute birds return to the islands to nest and stay for the summer season. When the autumn season starts, you can see some of the puffin chicks learning to fly for the first time. From May through September each year, visitors can experience the Northern Lights. These spectacular light formations keep the night skies ablaze and are something incredible to witness.
Seasons to Visit Iceland
Iceland generally has a cold climate and visitors need to be properly prepared. Even in the summertime, temperatures rarely reach 20 degrees Centigrade and in winter, they are well below freezing. Rainfall occurs throughout the year and good snowfall is experienced in the northern regions in winter. In the summer months, there is almost 24 hours of sunlight, owing to the country's far northern latitude. The Gulfstream is what dominates Iceland's climate and strong winds have been known to blow across the interior. If you want to explore the many landscapes, the summer months are the best time to do this. Summer runs from May through August. If you want to enjoy snow sports and see the Northern Lights, it's best to visit during the winter months which run from September to early May.
