Why Karen Zelermyer chose 3a Sección San Pablo Etla
We bought El Huajal in 2005 after spending 4 weeks vacationing in Oaxaca. We had both always loved Mexico and fell in love with the area -- the mountains, the many artisan pueblos, the warmth of the community. Some friends told us about the house and after going to see it we knew we wanted to own it and build a life there.
What makes this House unique
There is so much that we love about El Huajal -- the bright, airy, open feeling of the house, the expansive back yard, the cactus gardens, the sounds of the neighborhood goats and chickens, the wonderful community of North Americans living in the area and the warmth of the Mexican culture. The community has wonderful places to visit just a 5-minute walk from our home. Selvática, where organic soaps are produced; a local Palenque, which produces mescal and offers monthly 5 course dinner with all the mescal you can drink, and a terrific breakfast spot. Within a 10-minute drive you can visit a Mixteca workshop that creates Alebrijes, whimsical carvings depicting animals, people, objects, and imaginary creatures painted in bright colors, and Pueblo Nuevo, where brilliant textiles are woven. Tours to these locations are available.
