Casa Puerta Azul is a charming village property tucked away in a quiet corner of Albunuelas. It has recently been restored using traditional materials. The ground floor is open plan, and the upper floors have three pretty bedrooms and a wonderful roof terrace with views out over the village. This is a great house for a family wanting to be a part of a traditional Andalusian village, and still having the privacy of the private pool and sun-trap roof terrace. Albunuelas: Albuneulas is a quiet village at the end of the mountain road. Casa Puerta Azul is found in the Barrio Bajo (lower quarter) close to the orange groves and valley. The village has a bank, four bars, one restaurant, two supermarkets, pharmacy, doctor's surgery and a dentist, two churches and a small weekly market. The nearby town of Durcal has other shops and the major stores and Hypermarkets of Granada are close by. We have found the villagers to be very friendly but very few speak English and so you will have a very genuine experience of rural Spain!
The Mediterranean Coast and other activities: The nearest beach is about 20 kms away (40 minutes) at Salobrena. Slightly further is La Herradura (Almunecar) with its bustling beach restaurants and wonderful snorkelling.
Further afield is the scenic coastline of the National Park, Cabo de Gata and wide expanses of deserted sandy beaches. Excellent walking, horse riding, cycling, tennis, diving, paragliding and skiing from December to April in the mountains of the Sierra Nevada. Activities nearby include: Horse-riding, Walking, Cycling, Tennis, Diving, Paragliding, and Skiing.
Many visitors reckon that Granada is the most beautiful city in Andalucia. It is about 25 kms away (thirty minutes) and is very historic. The Alhambra Palace must be visited along with the Moorish quarter. Every year there is a music festival in June.

About Michael or Sue Cannell
We were lucky enough to spend a couple of weeks on holiday in the Lecrin Valley in 1998, and we fell in love with it. By accident we had rented a property in what we now know is 'real Spain', and were warmly welcomed by the locals, and we were charmed by a way of life unknown to us. After a short time looking, we were delighted to find a village house, which although small - was joined to a ruin. We were fortuitous enough to purchase the ruin a year later, and then renovate and extend the property. It is this property that we now offer for rent.

Overall really lovely and spacious house. Bit of a climb back to the car though!
The pictures really do not do justice to the house. It is really lovely decorated and spacious for minimum of 6 people. Overall we would have liked the house to be a bit cleaner, but it was definitely acceptable.
The main downside is that the village is not really very appealing and the house is on the outskirts and at the bottom of the village. this means that there is quite a steep walk up the hill back to the car, as the car cannot access the house.
The house and Albuñuelas were exactly what we hoped for when we as 3 adults and two children booked this holiday. A real Spanish retreat, the house is great, full of character and with ample indoor and outdoor space to relax away a few hours. It is well equipped with plenty of towels, bedding etc. Although I have to admit my partner and I slept on the roof terrace watching the shooting stars and listening to the silence.
The village is a beautiful place, the locals friendly and accepting of our different levels of Spanish which as a group range from fluent to basic.
Iain the caretaker was pleasant and welcoming, fulfilling his role well.

Comfortable, lovely home, also provides good exercise
While not for someone reluctant or unable to go up and down steep alleys and ladders, I recommend this home to anyone else! Lovely renovated/ decorated, comfy beds, 4 lovely places to have an in home meal, modern bathrooms and kitchen... Even of we caught quite hot weather, the stone walls store and keep the night cool, if one leaves the shutters clsed. We had a great family time there, including our teenage boy, who was motivated by the cuteness of his little room to keep it tidier than his own, at home. Iain gracefully waited for, met, greeted, helped us with the luggage down and back up tothe car, gave us good shopping and restaurant tips. Our teen is dreaming of going back there with friends, for the fabled "ski in the morning, beach in the afternoon".

Unfortunately we cannot change the access, but so glad to hear that Iain was such a help to you. Some people have braved the steep descent to offload their luggage, but you do need a bit of courage and a good vehicle! Please do return for the ski and sun experience!
Lovely Puerta Azul
This is the house of your dreams if you like spanish village life, tranquility and slow pace. Puerta azul is a pleasure to be in and around. It's such a joy to be in an environment where everything is beautiful. The house is beautifully decorated and works absolutely perfectly. We have rented it several times during different seasons. It is cool in the summer and has a lovely patio with a nice little pool. A fireplace and good heating during wintertime. We have had lots of wonderful meals on the roof terrace looking out over the beautyful Lecrin valley.
We always felt very welcome and everyone is always very friendly and helpful in the village.
Sue and Michael, you really created something wonderful. Thank you for sharing it with us. We hope to be back soon again

The Lecrin valley is a unique and beautiful place with its most wonderful views of the Sierra Nevada, but also the sight and smells of orange orchards and almond blossom as well as the odd mule!
Most beautiful place I have ever stayed
Absolutely gorgeous place- felt so relaxing.
The house is beautifully furnished and the bedroom we stayed in felt so luxurious in an authentic Spanish cosy way.
The kitchen was well equipped and even had an orange juicer which was amazing as the villa is surrounded by very fruitful orange trees in the village.
We had many nights in with the wood burning fire warming the lounge, trips to Granada and surrounding villages with the most beautiful views.
Amazing retreat that gets you away from everything - into a beautiful real Spanish setting in a beautiful home.

We couldn't say a bad word about our holiday and the house and location are probably the reasons why. The village, offering a very rustic and traditional setting, sits in the Lecrin Valley which offers wonderful views and a very hot climate. The bars in the village offer nice cold beer and local wines with authentic spanish tapas. Granada is a short drive away so a visit to the Alhambra Palace (a UNESCO world heritage site) is a must, the palace, gardens and views across Granada are breathtaking. We visited the coastal resort of Salobrena a couple of times which is a clean and family orientated beach, with various restaurants on the front. We also sampled the Santa Clara Golf Club, with a very modern and stylish clubhouse and a scenic but challenging course. Views down into the lake from the valley and the wide array of wildlife and orange, lemon and olive groves only add to the area surrounding Albunuelas. And as for the house itself, the sun terrace is a lovely place for a bbq on a summers evening with a jug of sangria, or a spot of sun bathing, the pool is ample size for a cooling dip with space around the pool for sitting in the sun and having some tapas of your own. The house inside is spacious with good kitchen facilities and a very large master bedroom. Its a real Spanish house with an authentic feel to it and that coupled with the location gave us a real desire to get to grips with the spanish culture and lifestyle. A thoroughly enjoyable holiday that we would jump at to go back to.
Albunuelas is one of the quiet, unspoilt villages in the Lecrin Valley, dotted around the hillsides and mountains of this area between Granada, the Sierra Nevada and the coast. It is a beautiful village surrounded by citrus groves, almong blossom and olive trees. Granada (30 minutes) with the famous Alhambra palace, Lanharon and Alpujarras (20 minutes), Seville and Cordoba (two hours. Europe's most southerly ski resort Sol y Nieve (50 minutes). The Mediterranean Coast (30 minutes). Golf: There is an existing 18 hole course at Granada and an existing 9 hole course at Motril that is being expanded to 18 holes. An exciting new 4 linked 18 hole courses is being built near Padul (15mins away) and should open in 2005. Ski: The skiing resort Sol y Nieve in the Sierra Nevada is 30mins away from Granada, 60 minutes drive from our house. The skiing resort is usually open from 1st December to 30th April. It was home for the 1996 World Championships. There are excellent walks to Mulhacen, the highest peak at around 3,500 meters.
