Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Offered as a one bedroom or two bedroom rental.

Puako Pines is a 3 bedroom 2 bath vintage cottage which has been newly refurbished and painted throughout. To reduce the impact on the property, only 2 bedrooms are utilized and the number of guests are limited to 2 for each bedroom and bath up to a maximum of 4 guests for the cottage. It is offered as a one bedroom/one bathroom or a two bedroom/ two bathroom rental. The property is not shared. We simply close off the unused bedrooms and bath.

The open floor plan allows for ocean views from the living and dining rooms. The kitchen is fully equipped with a Cusinart coffee maker and a ready made picnic basket for beach excursions.

Outdoors is complimented with a lanai, lounge chairs, grill, dining table and fire pit situated within yards of the beach.

After a day of island exploring, the luxurious cotton of the bedding and towels will bring welcome comfort. Adding to the creature comforts of the home is the dining, relaxing and sleeping is within yards of the shore.

The soothing sounds of the ocean provides a continuous backdrop for amazing beauty. Whether it is to be mesmerized by watching the changing dance of the waves or the sound of the ocean, Puako Pines is an oasis of tranquility.

Puako is conveniently located for enjoying all the resort hotels and restaurants on the Kohala Coast. The Mauna Kea, Hapuna Prince Resort, the Fairmont Orchid, the Mauna Lani and Hilton Hotels are just minutes away with their beaches, fine dining, shopping and world class golf courses. Kohala Divers and Ocean Sports is nearby at Kawaihae Center or Puako Harbor, and offers various ocean activities including scuba diving and sunset/afternoon sails.

Kawaihae Center and Harbor are just 10 minutes by car, with several great restaurants and shops.

Several fabulous beaches are minutes away. Hapuna Beach (voted best beach in Hawaii by Conde Nast Magazine) and Waialea Bay (Beach 69) both are wonderful for swimming, snorkeling and boogie boarding.

The sun shines 355 days per year and the average temperature highs are in the 80's with low's in the 60's. The ocean's edge is about 60 feet from your doorstep with crystal blue water that is 72-76 degrees year round.

Puako offers ideal fishing, snorkeling, diving, surfing and kayaking. Walking and biking is a favorite, too! Sea turtles, dolphins and whales are some of the sea life you may see. Puako offers beach style living and a real sense of getting away from it all.

Puako is rich in Hawaiian history. Walk south along the ocean trail to see the petroglyphs. There are approximately 3,000 petroglyphs scattered throughout the Puako Archaeological Fields. These pictures are etched into the lava rock that dominates the Kohala and Kona Coasts. Access to the Puako Petroglyph Park is through the adjacent Mauna Lani Resort.

The waters around Puako are extremely clear due to the fresh water run off and strong coastal currents. Divers and snorkelers can enjoy waters abundant in sea life along the shallow reef at Puako.

The Puako Marine Preserve is a protected environment for endangered sea life. Green sea turtles are a protected species and should not be bothered, only enjoyed and admired. Watch the humpback whales play along the coast during the winter and spring months. Beyond Puako's reef shelf the whales play and breach during their migration to Hawaii from Alaska. It is quite a sight!

There are many, many great restaurants… All within a 5-10 mile radius. There are lots of ocean activities and fun things to do! The Big Island is jam packed with adventures

About Ed and Marti Henrickson Owner / Property Manager

Puako Pines is owned by the Trusts of the original owners. He passed away in 2015 at the age of 99 and she passed in 2013. They were one of the first home owners in Puako . Their story is a rich history of a part hawaiian plantation manager and his wife, an honored local school teacher. You must read their story.

Ultimately, the property will be sold and the proceeds will be distributed to the Trusts' beneficiaries. Large waves damaged the seawall in 2015 and it has taken time to secure permits from the various regulatory agencies to allow the repair of the seawall. The property has not been put on the market as yet.

The property was refurbished and repainted and converted to a vacation rental in January 2018. The home was built in 1973 and has been lovingly restored to be enjoyed by fortunate visitors to Puako.

Ed and Marti Henrickson Owner / Property Manager purchased this house in 1958

Why Ed and Marti Henrickson Owner / Property Manager chose Puako

Puako provides a special charm with a one road community along the shores of the Pacific Ocean. But when you add a vintage cottage with a premier ocean side location, with the tidal pools ( just steps away from the property) providing some of the best snorkeling, swimming and diving in Puako.... then you have it all.

It is neat. It is clean. The architecture is unique. Is a treasure that will be probably torn down and replaced by a mansion some day.

Where else can 2 or 4 people find the space, privacy and tranquility on a multi-million ocean front property at such a bargain price?

Where else can two people stay in an ocean front cottage at this nightly rate. The hosts were true to their word. The kitchen was well stocked, the bedding was very comfortable and the towels were lush. It was hard for us to do anything other than sit on the back lanai watching the waves dance. The sounds of the ocean were entrancing. Would highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for private place to unwind and enjoy life. Have already made reservations for one more time.

Paradise on Earth!!!! Better than the pictures.

  • 5 of 5

“Paradise on earth ! What a spectacular location with humpbacks and dolphins and sea turtles in front of the house and even saw an eagle ray!

The house is lovely with a well stocked kitchen and barbecue for the ono, ahi, and mahi caught locally! Cannot say enough about the comfortable bedding and towels. So much more than we expected.

Farmers markets galore and lots of exploring right out the door!

Thank you Ed and Marti for caring deeply about this slice of heaven!”

Amazing Beachfront cottage!

  • 5 of 5

I stayed in this perfect little beachfront gem last week for 6 nights. I loved it! I loved everything about it. Ed and Marti were awesome- such nice, accommodating people. The cottage itself was fantastic. It's set on a quiet street in Puako and sits right on the beach. The beach in front is just lovely, small and quiet. There is amazing tide pooling too! The cottage has everything you could possibly need, they even had beach chairs and a portable cooler to use. The kitchen is stocked with all of the necessary utensils, cookware, etc. The linens were fresh and clean and the bed was comfy. Sitting on the deck in the evening, watching the sunset and the turtles in the water, sipping a cool drink unwinding from the day...ahh. I literally never wanted to leave. Honestly, I've stayed in many VRBOs, but this one is special. Do yourself a favor...stay here.

Everything you need for a perfect vacation.. We've been to Hawaii several times and have done most of the 'tourist stuff'. We were happy to just spend our time here, eating on the lanai, enjoying the view and watching for whales. Very relaxing indeed. Extremely comfortable mattress and pillows, a key to a good vacation. We had everything we needed to prepare meals and enjoy beach time. The house has a lot of character and makes the experience even more enjoyable. Very quiet neighborhood. Hosts were very helpful but never intrusive.

We will be back!

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a brand new structure and do not have common sense sensitivity to a few small quirks that inevitably accompany older structures, then Puako Pines may not be for you.

If you are looking for a one-of-a-kind experience, in a very special beach home/ vintage beach cottage and one-of-a-kind location, we could not recommend this property highly enough. The home is well provisioned with all you would need and more if you come unprepared. The beds, linens etcetera were all very comfortable. Marti and Ed are wonderful hosts – you know they are available if you require anything without being the least bit intrusive.

During our stay, and right from Puako Pines, we viewed humpback whales, countless turtles and petroglyphs. We snorkeled and had easy access to surrounding activities in the area…but frankly, we mostly stayed put to enjoy what this unique property had to offer!

Being born and raised on the Big Island, I was picky about where I wanted to stay and this location, property and hosts did not disappoint.

Owner's Response: And you are welcome back any time. We are so very grateful to have served as your hosts and are delighted you were enchanted with the charm of Puako Pines and the uniqueness of the whole experience. We are also pleased that the creature comforts we have added offset any of the "quirks" of the property. Of course, the ocean, the whales, the turtles and the location speaks for itself. It truly is a special place. It is our pleasure to be able to share it with you.

Beautiful Peaceful Setting

  • 5 of 5

Puako Pines is a hidden gem. It is a very comfortable 'vintage' cottage with an open air feeling. It is right on the ocean (sunsets are fabulous) with a sandy bottom making an easy entry for snorkeling. We saw lots of colorful fish and turtles. There were whales on the horizon. We spent hours on the open air porch enjoying our surroundings. Marti and Ed are exceptional hosts making us feel very welcome! We loved our stay!
