About Joan Roberts

We are US and Finnish nationals and live on the property full-time, with our horses and dog. Twenty years ago we were looking all over France for a property to keep our horses - as we came to the Dordogne, we fell head over heels in love with the area. On a sunny crisp March morning we came to see 'Cantegrive' for the first time - the rest is history! Twenty years later, we are still as happy and love to share our life experience in the Dordogne with our guests.

Joan Roberts purchased this chateau / country house in 1991

Why Joan Roberts chose Beaumontois En Périgord

As told above - perfect for us and our four-legged friends. And we decided to share this paradise with others.....

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Peace, quiet, privacy, wildlife - and not far from interesting sights and sounds!

Magical Time

  • 5 of 5

I could have not asked for a more delightful stay. The Cantegrive property is unparalleled in terms of its privacy and beauty. The accommodations are wonderfully clean and comfortable. The hosts, Joan and Sam, are ever so kind and helpful. They have a deep knowledge of the area and all its offerings. This is an ideally located property. All the major sites are within easy reach by car. The neighboring town of Beaumont, a quintessential French village, is a walk away.

This is my 6th visit to Cantegrive and it will certainly not be my last. Do not miss out on this magical experience.

Holiday getaway in Dordogne

  • 5 of 5

Cantegrive is surrounded by enchanting scenery and the pool and grounds are well maintained. The house is spacious and well equipped with lots of lovely art work. Joan and Sam are welcoming and exceptionally helpful hosts who go out of their way to make their guests feel at home. The nearby village of St Avit is beautiful and both the restaurant and bistro are great places to eat. The countryside is exquisite and restful and we left Cantegrive feeling destressed and relaxed. All in all we had a great time.

A Restorative and Enchanting Hideaway

  • 5 of 5

Cantegrive is an enchanting hideaway that’s at once warm and inviting. The 17th Century restored farmhouse, set amongst hillside meadows, is a place where you immediately feel at ease. Beyond the well-maintained pool and lawns, horses graze in their paddock and the receding woodland encloses you in the tranquil and restorative space. Watching the setting sun, a glass of Rosé in hand, while counting the rabbits, deer, and birds of prey, comes close to the bucolic holiday perfection I crave. So much so that this has been my second visit this year to Cantegrive.

Close to the town of Beaumont and a short journey from Bergerac Airport, it’s easily accessible by car. Not to mention a delightful set-off point for daily excursions. Be it Château de Beynac with its 12th Century fortress overlooking the Dordogne, or taking a closer look at the majestic river with a picnic-laden canoe trip, there are endless activities in the region. Let owners Joan and Sam guide you—their local knowledge is abundant, honest, and fitting for the timing of your stay. We would never have discovered the wonderful local pottery, the incredible restaurant in Saint Avit (which is so good, we’d like to keep it our secret!), or the Cadouin flower market without their supreme recommendations.

Most memorable were evenings spent cooking and relaxing at Cantegrive itself. Watching movies fireside, falling asleep in cosy bedrooms, and waking to breathtaking scenery with a breakfast of local produce—think fresh crusty bread, Périgord honey, the sweetest strawberries, and decadent cheeses. The main house where I stayed on my first visit would comfortably accommodate ten adults and both kitchen and living areas are inviting rooms to linger and recount the activities of the day. The two-bedroom cottage is just as pleasing, if not cosier still. If you’re after a quiet retreat from which to explore food markets, the many nearby châteaux, or just to relax poolside, Cantegrive provides the French country idyll you so often read about but so rarely find. Coaxing us back to this rare gem requires no effort.

I was one of the friends

  • 5 of 5

I was one of the friends mentioned in JKH's review and I can echo everything she said. We loved being able to take day trips and come back and eat the lovely fresh produce and other goodies we bought at local markets. And, of course, drink local wine! Having the pool was wonderful as it was an unusually hot spell when we were there. Sam and Joan were wonderful hosts--they were the stars of the show, in fact. They were always available with good advice as to where to eat and where the market was that day. In addition to the magical prehistoric caves--which have been a life long dream of mine--we saw many Romanesque churches with incredible sculpture and also visited a lavender farm that was a distance away, but well worth the drive. A very nice feature of Cantegrive, in addition to our hostesses, was the fact that there are so many interesting day trips you can take without spending your whole day driving.

A delightful ten star experience in the heart of the most amazing part of France, the Dordogne.

  • 5 of 5

This was my fourth stay at Cantegrieve and I cannot wait for the next time. The setting of the Gite is delightful in every way. This time I brought new friends and we stayed in the largest of the apartments, well kept and serene. The kitchen is well equipped, the dining room (we ate in one night as it was still hot at 8:00) large and welcoming and the living room cool and inviting, even in the heat of July. The best part was to return in the evening and gather around the large pool, to cool off from the heat of the day and relax with friends. Later we would gather around the outside table, have our light suppoer and feel that we were in a movie about people in France who ate outside their rural houses.

The location is magnificent: in the country of "La France Profond", deep in history (the caves nearby), the architecture of medieval churches (amazing) and the simple-to-complex markets, one in a nearby town everyday. Take your pick.

The entire stay, in the beautiful and well-cared for large stone 16th century building that houses three lovely apartments, was made even more delightful by our Cantegrieve hosts, Joan and Aune. They were helpful from start to finish, supplying us with information and help every day--maps, rides where necessary (I came separately by train) cheerleading us and giving us tips on the local towns. Anything we asked seemed to be at their fingertips.

There are many beautiful places to stay in France, but no one can match the attention of our hosts to our needs at Cantegrieve.

Last time I stayed in this gite was with my children and grandchildren, 18 of us in all. We rented both the large and small apartments. There was ample room for all, and the children enjoyed the local castles and pony rides in nearby Beaumont. Whether you are a couple or a large family or just a few friends, you could not do better than this rental! As someone who writes books set in medieval France (The Canterbury Papers, the Rebel Princess) and who visits France twice a year, I have to say Cantegrieve is my favorite place to stay!

a charming tranquil setting in the heart of one of the most beautiful areas in France

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I have stayed at Cantegrive on several occasions and always look forward to our return trip. We've stayed there just the two of us, and also with a larger group made up of friends and their families. Most recently, we stayed in "La Grande Maison" as we were a bigger group. Plenty of room to move around, very spacious, but cozy gathering spots in the kitchen, dining room and before a roaring fire in one of the largest fireplaces I've ever seen, outside some of the chateaux that dot the surrounding area. Joan and Aune - the owners - are perfect hosts. They are around if you need them - readily available to assist with dinner reservations, directions, where the best local markets are - but completely respect guests' space and privacy so one feels like this is your very own, private 17th century farmhouse! In terms of the grounds and surrounding area - beautiful, very convenient to everything one needs, including some of the best cuisine in France, but tucked up on a hillside via a private lane. As such, very tranquil and peaceful, but not far from anything. evening walks down the lane to a small private vineyard leads grants one a beautiful vista toward Beaumont-du-Perigord. A perfect way to begin an evening in the Dordogne!
