WE HAVE 7 FLATS AVAILABLE, PLEASE, CONTACT FOR DETAILS ABOUT OUR OTHER FLATS. We offer unforgettable and very interesting wine tours and cooking classes.

The farmhouse is equipped with ancient quality furniture, fitted with all modern comfort items, with maximum level certifications regarding the safety and the energy saving (floor heating/ refreshing with geothermal system, thermal and acoustic insulation).

Silvana, Piergiorgio, and their family invite you to spend a vacation at Podere Cunina, an old Tuscan farmhouse situated on a hill with a 360° panoramic view. The farmhouse and grounds were restored to include 7 apartments, barbeque and picnic areas, and a swimming pool with wi-fi connection. Podere Cunina is an ideal location from which to discover the Crete Senesi, Val d'Orcia, and all of Tuscany. Surrounded by this ancient landscape, essential and harmonious, your respect and love for nature's beauty will be nourished. Your eyes and your soul will remember it….and you will remain always attracted to this land

Livestock paths, numerous vineyards, olive-groves, truffle-grounds, and lush forests with oaks, ilexes, broom and hawthorn can be seen here. Travelling along the rural dirt roads, often located on hill ridges, seems like sailing among waves of earth and, when overlooked by an open sky and pushed by the wind, one feels very small.

This land is crossed by the ancient Via Cassia road and is part of the Francigena pilgrims route. It is rich with old parish-churches, abbeys, and ancient farmhouses and thermal springs, as well as travertine quarries which gave birth to the famous local handicrafts. Due to their peculiar landscape and the abundance of artistic and historical references, the Sienese Clay Hills are among the most famous and photographed environments in Italy. Set between the hills, the fields of grain and the cypress trees, the Clay Hills are a countryside heritage protected by UNESCO. Here mass tourism doesn't exist, it would be destructive and would devastate the intimacy and harmony eminating from these hills. In recent yeats efforts havebeen made to renovate local farmhouses and restart crop cultivation, which was abandoned in the '60s and '70s following industrial development. These rural smallholdings live again and often offer hospitality to tourists from all over the world as farm-holiday property and locations.

PODERE CUNINA in BUONCONVENTO is also a farm-holiday location within this system of architectural and landscape recovery that fully respects its environment. Traditional materials typical of the area, sourced via accurate and detailed research, were used for the renovation. Located inside a large nature reserve, with many small and medium-sized woodland animals, it offers 7 finely-renovated flats to tourists, with views of Montalcino, Mount Amiata and the hills of Buonconvento and Siena. It is equipped throughout with quality, antique furniture, fitted with all modern comforts, with maximum level certification regarding safety and energy saving (underfloor heating via geothermal system, thermal insulation, pool).

Again in the light of environmental recovery, we have restarted working the soil by restoring a small existing olive-grove and creating a new one with about 800 plants of the species Frantoio, Leccino, Moraiolo, and Pendolino. The agricultural production of this small farm is the biological Pure Olive Oil ('extravirgin') from the Sienese Clay Hills, honey and organic saffron.

A loving restoration

Over a delicious lunch prepared by son Marcello, who is a trained chef and thus offers guests private cooking lessons, we heard the passion and love that Silvana, Piergiorgio and their children have put into the estate. Piergiorgio explained how the restoration took years, as they recuperated as much of the original materials as possible and then went on the search for original pieces to decorate their new home. The restoration is high quality, with beautiful fixtures and furnishings blending in perfectly with the feel of an old farmhouse: the authentic hand-painted walls were done by Piergiorgio himself and the heavy wooden shutters on the windows, wrought-iron beds and tiles in the apartments combine perfectly with every modern convenience (including TVs which I imagine I would never even turn on if I stayed here).

We falled in love with our landscape, the rolling hills, the colors of the nature , the cereal fields, the very open tuscan sky, the sun, the clean air, the wineyards and olivegroves, the old medieval and reinaissance small towns. What makes this farmhouse unique

The ground has amazing colours and is so maleable that anyone passing over it leaves tracks. Livestock paths, numerous vineyards, olive-groves, truffle-grounds, and lush forests with oaks, ilexes, broom and hawthorn can be seen here..

Travelling along the rural dirt roads, often located on hill ridges, seems like sailing among waves of earth and, when overlooked by an open sky and pushed by the wind, one feels very small.

Beautiful property, beautiful region, excellent hosts

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights in the Vitis apartment. The entire property is breathtakingly beautiful and the apartment itself was very large, with a downstairs and upstairs. I can't speak highly enough about the property or the Freddi family that owns and runs it - our entire stay was so memorable. The property is at the top of a hill with incredible views. There are herbs growing all around the house and the smell is amazing.

We also had dinner one night with the family and they were a joy to spend time with.

The property is located outside a quaint little town called Buonconvento and is only a 10 minute drive from Montalcino, which produces some of the best red wines in the world. You definitely will need to rent a car to stay at this property. We rented at Florence airport and the rental process was very simple.

We did both the cooking class and the wine tour with Marcello. Both were excellent and we would highly recommend them. Marcello is a trained chef and sommelier and was very knowledgeable. The cooking class was very educational - we're looking forward to putting our skills to use back home. The wine tour was awesome and Marcello's expertise on wines was great to have. I would recommend buying wines at the vineyards or the Vino al Vino wine shop in Montalcino and bringing them back home. They were about 40% less than best prices I could find in the US. We bought foam 3-bottle wine holders from Mailboxes Etc in Italy to package them in our suitcase and it worked great. Also, we didn't get charged any duty/tax on the extra bottles at customs in US.

We would also recommend buying breakfast items from the local Coop grocery store and cooking breakfast in the apartment. The eggs in Italy are 10x better than eggs in US. We had some great egg and prosciutto sandwiches for breakfast in the apartment.

Finally, we would recommend Ristorante Da Mario for dinner in Buonconvento. Excellent pasta and meat dishes at great prices. And the house wine is top-notch and so cheap.

You will not be disappointed with this property. It is a true gem.

Peaceful, Beautiful, Immaculate

  • 5 of 5

A truly special hilltop setting has been lovingly restored by Piergiorgio and Silvana who are the most gracious and kind hosts. Spotless rooms, peace and quiet, and big vistas make this a very happy place. Don't hesitate to accept son Marcello's offer to guide you to local wineries for the day or to take his cooking class and have dinner with the family and other cooking class guests. He is a degreed sommelier and chef and his knowledge and expertise is guaranteed to impress even the most experienced connoisseurs and epicureans. This place rocks, in the best possible laid-back way. We will return.

My family (incl. a 7 and 5 year old) and I spent a week staying at the Cunina. We stayed for the first couple of nights in the Hedera and the rest in the Salix.

We all had a fantastic and relaxing time with some great memories! Like most, we have travelled a great deal and have had good and bad experiences. Silvana and family have an incredible attention to detail both in the fixtures and fittings and their extremely welcoming nature which is really second to none! They certainly could not do enough for us.

The location is incredible and we regularly met other guests down by the pool to watch the sun set over the rolling Tuscan countryside. Loads of nooks and crannies for the kids to explore. Just a 10 minute drive into Buonconvento which had ample facilities for a week's holiday.

If you have any doubt about booking, don't! You will not be disappointed.

We will definitely be back!

Lovely farmhouse, magnificent view, great hosts!

Podere Cunina is a lovely 7 apartment-farmhouse atop of a hill overlooking a Tuscan valley close to Buonconvento. Giorgio and Silvana take care of their guests with great hospitality. They offer cooking classes as well as locally produced wine, honey, and olive oil. We also enjoyed the large pool and the magnificent view!!

Coming from northern Italy, the Freddis came to visit Tuscany and, like many of us, fell in love with the region. They were lucky and bold enough to take on the challenge of restoring this farmhouse to the south of Siena from ruin, since it was pretty much just walls when they found it

We were invited by the Freddi family to come and visit this April and have a chat over lunch. As we drove up the dirt road with a few potholes here and there (nothing our own DT-mobile, a Toyota Prius, wasn't able to handle), we concurred that it was worth it! Anyone arriving here cannot be left untouched by the stupendous views of the surrounding hills..While the photos on their website are quite spectacular, the estate is so much better in person. To be told of the views is one thing, but to actually be there and be surrounded by them and see the medieval hilltop village of Montalcino just beyond the house is certainly another. I stopped and imagined enjoying the sunset by the pool, carved out on the hill just below the house, with a glass of wine and the view: what dreams are made of!!
