Please Note - PLEASE CALL OWNER FOR AVAILABILITY AS IT IS NOT SHOWN ON CALENDER. This home is located right in the heart of this exquisite little village about nine kilometers (5 miles) south of Vaison la Romaine. It features modern amenities with the character and old world charm of a traditional Provencal home. Wonderful views from every window. Both bedrooms are Air conditioned for your comfort. Light airy and comfortable, the décor uses local materials and the craftsmanship of local artisans. The living room is spacious, ideal for relaxing - either with your favorite music, watching a movie or TV. A restful separate corner provides the ideal spot for reading or catching up on correspondence. The dining room is set up to enjoy those evenings when you wish to enjoy a special meal and a bottle of the excellent wine made right here in the area. A kitchen fully equipped to allow you to use those culinary skills, together with the incredible fresh ingredients (available at the many Markets in the area) to create incredible meals. The table and comfortable chairs in the kitchen ensures that you will never be lonely in the kitchen whilst cooking.

From the kitchen, enjoy the view of the vineyards and the Dentelles de Montmirail or step outside through the French doors to the courtyard garden to snip fresh herbs and enjoy the ambience. Breakfast, lunch and dinner in the courtyard are especially magical. In the shadow of the old church, a soft glow from the lights of the steeple at night, the trickle of the fountain on a warm summer evening or a cool crisp Provencal morning. The graveled courtyard is landscaped in the traditional Provencal style. It provides and charming and intimate space. Of course, an olive tree - bordered by grape vines, climbing wisteria, lavender, rosemary and many other herbs - not to mention an antique fountain. The back wall of the old church (with grapes and wisteria climbing on it), makes up the back wall of the courtyard.

Upstairs in the oldest part of the house - tucked away under beamed ceilings you'll find two bedrooms and two bathrooms (one full bathroom and one with a shower and basin). The bedrooms are furnished and decorated for comfort, rest and relaxation. Both rooms are furnished with king sized beds and have windows that look out over the rooftops of Sablet, the nearby vineyards and the neighboring village of Seguret. The beds can be configured as two king sized beds or one king bed and two twin beds. Bedrooms are air conditioned to help you get a good night's sleep on those warm Provencal summer evenings.

About Marianne Houlahan

Can anyone be this lucky? We have the choice of two of the best places in the world to live and spend time in - scenic Northern California where we live, and our very special vacation home in the beautiful little village of Sablet in Provence. We fell in love with France in the 1980's while living in London and working in both London and Paris, then travelling extensively throughout France (in lots of campgrounds with two small children). After returning to California, we continued to visit France and especially Provence, until my wish to cook the wonderful food we were seeing at the many (many, many) markets we visited, took over and we rented a house in 'our' village. That was when we (accidentally) found 'Maison des Pelerins'. It wasn't for sale at that time and we said, 'too bad this house isn't on the market!' Well... a year later it was. We have thoroughly enjoyed owning our home, remodeling it and sharing it with our great guests who visit each year. We love hearing about their vacations and love welcoming them back.

Marianne Houlahan purchased this house in 2005

Why Marianne Houlahan chose Sablet

Location! Location! Location! In the middle of the old village, inside the walls but with a private courtyard garden and wonderful views from every window of each spacious, charming room (somewhat unique in villages where houses are huddled together at the expense of outside recreational space and sweeping views).

This house has a fascinating history (along with its neighbor - the old Papal Vice-Legat's home) being a part of the buildings owned by the Church during the time when the Pope administered the Catholic Church from Avignon. If only walls could talk!

What makes this house unique

We love smelling the fresh bread baking at the Boulangerie (one street below us in the village).Walking just about 2 minutes to the village for our fresh bread and pastries each morning. Maison des Pelerins has been remodeled, furnished and outfitted for comfort and convenience, yet retaining its old world charm. In Spring 2008, we added Air Conditioning in each bedroom - on the warm summer evenings, it was wonderful to have a cooled bedroom to retire to - we heard from many guests that they really appreciated it. Sablet is a quintessentially French living village - it is close to everything but off the beaten path, which makes it an ideal base to visit all parts of Provence, whatever your interest - History, art, wine, culinary interests, markets and so much more. Vaison la Romaine, Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, Marseilles, Cassis, Fontaine de Vaucluse, Isle sur la Sorgue, St. Remy de Provence and Les Baux de Provence are just some of the well known names that are between 10 min and 90 min from Sablet. Wine tasting is right at your doorstep as we are located in the heart of the Cote du Rhone Appellation with hundreds of wineries within a 30 min drive. The wonderful markets of Provence are all around, especially in Vaison la Romaine, Carpentras, Orange and Isle sur la Sorgue.

Guestbook comments from the owner

“We had a wonderful stay in your beautiful house and loved the village.

I know you have recently appointed a new manager and thought I would let you know (He) looked after things very well.

During the stay we had one night when someone stole the outside fuses leaving us with no light or power.

(He) attended to this first thing the next morning and all was well. He should be an asset to you.

Thank you again for sharing your home.” Just sent to us by guests referred to us by AHIF - Thank You!

Dreamy Provence vacation

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I had the pleasure of experiencing both Maison de Pelerins and La Baume, the downstairs apartment. We couldn't have been happier for our 2 week stay. The ancient building belies the modern amenities inside -- from bathrooms to kitchen to living spaces and bedrooms. Yet, the remodeling has been done with an eye to keeping the ambience of an old Provencal maison. We especially enjoyed the kitchen, living areas and outdoor courtyard in the Maison, and the bedrooms and bathrooms in La Baume. (Loved the added touch of the Provence cookbooks which kept us happily ensconced in the glorious Maison kitchen.) The villagers couldn't have been more friendly and helpful, and it was a great central location for exploring other parts of Provence. Thank you for a memorable vacation.

Owner's Response: Hi Carole, I am so glad you liked the kitchen and cookbooks. They are among my favorites and as s matter of fact, I made Apricot Jam using Susan Herman Loomis's recipe - Delicious. We tried to keep the traditional look of a Provencal home so our guests would have the experience of spending time in a real Provence, and not just an old shell of a village that had been modernized. Given the history of the house and the Church complex that it it is a part of, I think it is particularly important to match the character. I hope you had a wonderful tour and got to know Sablet well - and look forward to seeing all of you again! A Bientot, Marianne

A Jewel !

  • 5 of 5

Two couples stayed a week at Maison de Pelerins in celebration of our 50th anniversaries.

It was absolutely delightful. The house is extremely well equipped. Lots of space and the location is spectacular. It was all as described on the VRBO site and more. Close to an abundance of towns and villages each with their on charm and uniqueness.

The location allows wonderful views of the vineyards with mountains in the background.

A go to place for anyone wanting to explore fabulous Provence while staying in a medieval village.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your kind remarks. I'm delighted that you had a terrific fiftieth Anniversary celebration. What surprises most of our guests, (including my own children), is the myriad of towns and villages that are in very close proximity to Sablet! So there's lots to see and do. Would you believe there is an inland lake with a "beach" about 20 mins away - Prato Plage! Thanks again for visiting us at Maison des Pelerins - hope to see you soon. A bientot, Marianne & Gerard

Great Location

An excellent location in a beautiful village. All the main sights of Provence within easy driving distance. House was extremely well equipped although the walk up to it was interesting (had a large car that could not navigate the street).

Amazing stay at Sablethome

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed at Maison des Pelerins for the first week in August of last year. I had been in touch with Marianne by email some weeks before, and, based on our interactions then, I knew that we would feel welcome and at home the moment we arrived, and I wasn't wrong. We had an amazing 10 day stay for our 25th anniversary and had the time of our life! Restaurants, wine tasting were all at walking distance. Our stay was extraordinary and far beyond our expectations. Our rooms were well appointed with everything we needed and beyond. We will return on a future trip. My wife and I had an amazing time, I can't wait to come back.

Sablet is a beautiful hillside town; and Maison des Pelerins was a perfect place from which to explore the surrounding region, as well as being a refuge when we decided to spend the day relaxing. The lovely home suited our needs down to the ground: the bedrooms were spacious, I loved the bathroom, and there was nothing better than throwing open the doors in the morning onto the gardens.

We will definitely be coming back!

Owner's Response: I am so glad you enjoyed your stay at Maison des Pelerins and Sablet. I love the space but coziness of Maison des Pelerins, and being able to smell the bread baking right at about 7am each day - what a treat to wake up to! Did you visit all the antique faires in May in that area and eat lots of cherries? Keep having fun!

A Place to enjoy

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at La Maison des Pelerins was the high light of our experience on our trip to France. Not only did we enjoy a wonderful setting in a small village surrounded by a beautiful country side with many wineries to visit. The village itself was a delightful quint setting. In addition we were able to explore the area of of southern France, much to do and much to see. The home itself was much more than we expected. The pictures we were able to review on the WEB site were very nice but when we got there we found it pleasantly exceeded our expectations. A beautifully well cared for home that helped to make our trip so wonderful. Would we go back to Sablet and La Maison Pelerins Again ? Yes, and we plan to be there next year.

Owner's Response: Warren - thanks so much to yourself and Bobbi for another visit to Maison des Pelerins and Sablet. It is a lovely village isn't it? Near some wonderful sights, but away from all the tourist hub-bub. Especially being able to relax after a long day's sightseeing, with a glass of Beaumes de Veinse Rose from La Pigeade, is one of my favorite things to do. Being able sit at the table in the garden and look through the kitchen out to the Dentellles de Montmirail is superb. Look forward to seeing you guys again soon.

Such a disappointment

  • 1 of 5

An immaculately clean, well equipped house in a lovely village but a ruined holiday due to the owner's negligence and inefficiency!

We arrived at Les Pelerins on a Saturday in February after a long drive from the UK. There was snow on the ground and the temperature was minus 5C. Unfortunately, the owners had failed to pay an electricity bill and, after the usual warnings, the supply had been disconnected so we had no heating, no lights, no hot water, no phone or internet and no appliances. The house, having been empty since October, was very cold. When we managed to speak to the owners a couple of days later, they offered us alternative accommodation in a small studio apartment, but, in order to re-connect the supply, the electricity company needed access to the house. As nobody else was available to do this, we were obliged to man the house for 8am until 7pm and, even then, when they finally came, they couldn't find the house and were about to drive away. Fortunately, my husband had gone down to the village to look for them.

We picked this house as it had central heating and a log burner as we knew it would be cold at this time of year and we were charged a winter fuel supplement on top of the rental. Unfortunately, the supply of logs was very limited so we had to restrict the use of the log burner to eek out the wood.

As ever when going on holiday, our expectations were high. We did our research and had looked forward to this for almost 12 months. We had to live in terrible conditions for 4 days and this caused a huge amount of stress and discomfort. There is no car access to the house unless you have a very small car so unloading and repacking is difficult but we had decided to leave on the fifth day had electricity not been re-connected. The owners have refunded one week of our rental but the knock on effect of the first few days spoilt our holiday. They have not responded to our recent e mail sent since we returned home.
